Got a recording question for you guys! Ok, so I was fiddling around with kind of a YOB style riff and I had my delay and reverb absolutely cranked to get that somewhat washy feel and I just kind of quickly recorded it and thought of something. How do you go about layering guitars to make them sound so big with so many effects going at the same time? I generally record with 2 SM58's one directly on it one about a inch back and tilted slightly at a angle directly on a cranked Orange or JSX peavey. I'm used to recording riffs dry and just MAYBE putting some slight verb on it but nothing crazy.

So the project I'm looking to do is going to have a lot of down tuned heavy guitars with delay and reverb on them but I'm worried I'm going to have a mixing nightmare on my hands. It would be fine if I didn't put down generally 4 different guitar passes on things but since I'm a noob at this that's how I've been fattening up my guitar parts. Any suggestions on recording with effects using amps rather than DI amp sims?

1. Record your rig + DI tracks simoultaniously
2. If you find the delay too much/too little... You can reamp that and set the amp/pedal settings differently without having to re-record everything from scratch.

It's a time consuming to reamp but worth it since it would have taken a lot longer to re-record everything with the guitar

^ Yeah, that.

Another option is to record dry and go crazy with the effects in your DAW. This can be good for sending all your guitars to a single reverb, for example, and you can then mess about with panning and shit in that - having a guitar with the dry signal panned hard left and the reverb panned hard right can be a cool effect.

Also if you've got one mic really close to the speaker and another a little further back, make sure you're checking the phase on them.

Yes, I have no idea why the OP didn't thought about just recording his real rig and then adding effects in DAW... That's the easiest and best way basically.
Easier to sync delays to the BPM too!

I did think about using the effects in the daw, i just prefer using what I'm used to as a player. Yeah phase is always fun to deal with but i can usually get a nice big sound out of the two. So basically just split the signal is the best bet regardless.

I did some tone tests just using the effects on the entire master and it sounded pretty decent just thought if i could skip all the fuckery in the daws effect channels id be happy but it seems ill have to do it regardless

Oh and what do you need to reamp? Is it just a box that sends the signals to the amps again? Never done it

A reamp box is essentially a DI box wired the other way. So you take a send out of your interface, plug it into the reamp box, then just straight into your guitar chain.
