Hey guys quick question, what genre and instrument is used in this piece? -

The genre is techstep.

It probably doesn't have any real instruments - given the time period SS2 was made in, it was probably some sort of module file (.it, .xm, .s3m, etc). Imagine midi but with real samples.

Thanks a lot. I'm going to look into this genre more because the soundtrack for SS2 was dope.

So would they have programmed those module files with a synth or something in a digital interface?

you should try milkytracker. it's a free "tracker" software with a bit of a learning curve but that's how music of this style and era was made. lucky for you (living in 2019), most of the "instruments" used for trackers are available for free download.

That's pretty much what midi does :-P

MIDI has no sound of it's own. It's just a cliche that "MIDI sounds like 90s video game music"
