I find I'm able to learn rhythm parts with reasonable ease. Some I have to improve on with speed and accuracy, but they still aren't too hard to learn. I can also play Tony Iommi's solos pretty well. They aren't super fast and are mostly based on the pentatonic scale.

I need help learning fast solos. For example, Slayer's solos seem totally confusing. They aren't really based on any scale and it's hard to distinguish note by note.

So, how do you go about learning extremely fast solos, especially when they sound like a blur on the recording?

Thanks for your help!

I would recommend listen to the song a thousand times and then set the speed of the video on YouTube at 0.5x speed. Also, experiment on the chromatic scale by yourself and find out any cool lick by chance.

Chromatic shred is hard to replicate. Hell, on my song 72 (which I’ll embed below for reference,) I highly doubt I could play that back note-for-note how it was written without a fair amount of practice. A lot of these sorts of solos are improvised to begin with or roughly “outlined.”

If you want to get close, try to find a video of the guitarist playing the solo and watch their hands. Watch what strings they’re playing on and the position of their hands. If a video doesn’t exist, slow down the audio through Audacity (YT is fine too, but Audacity will give you the option to slow it down however slow you want it to be if 50% is still too inarticulate.) In addition, listen for the timbre of the notes. Thicker, boomier notes which seem to meld together would indicate lower strings whereas thinner, punchier notes would indicate higher strings.

72:

(Solo is at 2:38)

if they sound like a blur on the recording, how will anyone know that you're playing them correctly? :D

don't worry too much about it... if you really want, you can look for isolated guitar tracks/stems, they can be found for several songs by several artists, on youtube and other websites I shouldn't mention here to maintain appearances... and/or you can use some kind of audio software to slow down the song (or the isolated guitar track)... also bear in mind that esp with "blurry" solos, it's fairly likely the "musician" never played it like that again... which you can confirm by checking different live versions of the song... so focus on the solos with clear phrasing/licks for accuracy and jam your way through the noisy ones...
