Specifically I want to be able to create backwards guitar solos that sound like the types linked below. I mean, I'm sure there is probably a simple function in my Reaper DAW that'll just reverse everything with a click or two, but I guess I mostly was wondering if anyone had any tips from experience about how they went about constructing such a lick/solo. Or if there are certain things I should know about the process:

Solo starts at 02:09:

Solos/licks start at 01:06:

all you have to do is right click the original non-reversed take, go to Item Properties, and at the bottom is a checkbox marked "Reverse". From there, you just need to make sure your composition works in reverse.

It’ll be easier to experiment if you use a reverse delay in real time, rather than turning around a recorded signal and hoping it fits.
IIRC there’s a JS plugin for reaper, but it shouldn’t be hard to find other free VSTs on the net. E-phonics retrodelay (legacy) was pretty good.

uhm, okay. i have done a few :D not sure what you're aiming for, as the two examples you posted don't have much for musical value (sorry not sorry).

the "simplest way" to make a backwards solo work is to keep the beat steady, then write a backing track with the chords in reverse order. solo over it, record it, then reverse it and add it over the song (with the chords in the right order). this should work. there are more tricks, but i'm not planning to do a tutorial here (sorry) :)

here's a little more musical (non metal) example:
Spoiler: show

the solo kicks in at 1:53 with a nice visual cue :D

if you want a good laugh, google for the story behind the rem song lyrics
