my band is about to release its first album, and we thought about sending it to labels to get promoted. how does that work? does it even work?

Generally, labels will want you to already be selling well enough on your own or have a proven track record from past projects before they'll consider you. The other thing is, times are tough right now and there are less people buying records, so your chances of getting signed are low. I would also heavily, HEAVILY recommend against signing with just anybody. Don't get desperate.

If you wanna maximize your chances, build a social media following and make friends with the right people. For pure promotion just hire a PR company.

Just send an email with an exclusive stream via a SoundCloud link or something with a short writeup to some of your favorite underground labels and see how it goes. Ignore anyone telling you that you need to already be big before doing it- Relapse might care about that, but pretty much anyone smaller doesn't if the music is good enough.

This is written for submitting music for reviews but a lot of it is great advice for submitting to labels as well.
