I don't even know if I have any - as I never was a tab-noob. I don't know if it is good advice, but trash the tabs (they are almost always wrong in some way) and try to figure out things by ear and musical logic, especially in these quite simple structures, like the given example (Guyana). It is simply chord playing, starting with E minor and going through root-fifth downward (keeping the root note on the D string until the subsequent chord change to C major and then to D major), then upward and so on. Ear is the foundament and helps to observe and notice musical laws :). Good luck

Tab noob? Wow, gee thanks, I choose to learn Guyana fully and flawless, and after listening, I thought there could be a chance that I might have missed something, that you might hadn't.

Unless you're getting your tab straight from the band then there is always a chance it won't be flawless since it's based on the interpretation of someone else to begin with.

I dont get it, why does people think learning from tabs is so bad? It's not like everyone starts with incredible musical ear and can learn any song by listening to it once. It takes time to train your ear, and untill you're good enough, isnt it kinda better learning from tabs than doing nothing at all?

He used a five string bass, IIRC.

WRONG,For "Necroticism" & " HeartWork" it was a four string.

in the videos it's a 5 string, at least the Necroticism ones. Anyways, it doesn't matter, Jeff Walker is nothing special as a bassist.

Tuning BADG is stupid. BEAD is a lot easier.

I recently picked up a Samick Fretless Five-String for $699 new at GC. Seems really cheap, which makes it seem like a bad deal, but I love it's sound and the action on it is really good. Plus it looks ok (which, regardless of what anyone says, is important to most people).

Anyways, I was trying it out a GC before I decided to buy it, and one of the floor workers (an attractive female named Autumn) came up and asked if I could find everything alright. Anyways, to make the story short, we got to talking and I eventually landed her number (which I probably won't call). Does that count as a bass helping pick up a lady?

Here, this page has 1. But if you have Power Tab (which I highly recomend) then there are 3 more that have bass in them.

Oops, I forgot the link, haha. http://www.911tabs.com/tabs/h/hate_eternal/

I have a Silvertone Fairlane (Silvertone's Jazz Bass ripoff). I detuned mine it sound like a swarm of bees (which went swimmingly by the way). I'm thinking about buying a new amp. I'm not looking for much just a nice amp, bigger than the thirty watt one I have now. I am planning on going a bit higher on the wattage scale, about fifty to seventy watts. What brand should I look into?

Please feel free to criticize the crapola I have now.

Get one of the Ampeg BA series combo amps. They are pretty cheap and they sound great. Also the Gallien-Kruger Backline series combo amps are decent as well... Im not sure if they make them anymore though, hmm.

Just picked up an Ibanez BTB200 and got it set up to A. The shop was a specialist bass shop, so they did a great job setting the intonation and everything. Heaps heavier than what I'm used to playing, so between playing and singing I get tired a lot quicker than I used to.

I'm having a trouble to practice too much, I get bored really fast because the large part of the excercises my teacher gives me are these blusey-sounding lines, it takes me some time to get them right but after I do, it begins to bore me quickly. It's not really my style of choice (musicwise) and I just give up pretty quickly.
My musical ear sucks too, I can seperate the bass from the other instruments in most cases, but I cant get it right by ear. I tried once to get Nirvana's "Smells Like..." out myself, and after I checked it out with a tab I wasnt even near the real thing, and it's like the easiest song on earth.
I guess I'll be working with tabs in the near future.

just tell te teacher to step it up a noch or self teach your self.

I need more songs to play. I know quite a bit as for now, but most of them are of the easy kind (Like My Dying Bride, Black Sabbath, Pixies, Red Hot Chilly Peppers). I've been trying some more difficult songs, like Into Eternity - Identify and Death - Spirit Crusher, but I cant keep up with the speed (on both hands really). I've also learnt Bach's Suite 1 In G Major off some tab I found, but I cant play it at the normal tempo (which is barely 50bpm!). I usually take it down to half or 3/4 of the tempo and try to build it up from there, but I usually cant even play at that speed!

So I dont really know what I'm asking here, maybe if someone can recommand me on some easy stuff that'll also help me build some technique, because I feel I'm aiming too high for my level and on the other hand the songs I can play are too easy for my level, so I'm not gaining anything from playing them.

Learn Hypocrisy - Roswell 47. It is a very simple song to play and it is pretty slow too.

Oh, oops. I mean this: http://www.harmony-central.com/Bass/Art ... nging_Ten/

Just got this tutorial, it seems to be awesome, if you really can see progress a few months in. I've been playing bass for like 7 months and have no idea if I'll ever be able to pick with all my fingers.

I started practicing according to this tutorial today, I'll let you guys know if there's any progress. :P

I've been playing bass for 10 years now and I really prefer old school; I mean, the old four-string-fretted bass. I don't like pop-bass or slapping. Heavy Metal is better off played in the basic way ala Steve Harris or Phil Lynott (R.I.P) to say just some names.

Not yet, recording a demo soon. More death than doom - think "onward to Golgotha" sort of sound. If you know any Australian death metal bands you may have heard of some of our members other stuff - Abominator, Cryptal Darkness, Accursed, Excarnated, Urgrund etc....

but there's not only heavymetal around. I mean, progressive fusion/thrash can't have only basic bass lines on a 4-string, please.
And from a technical point of view - Steve Harris actually slaps bass, but uses his ordinary fingers instead of thumb - yet the sound is 'clangy', so his technique one cannot call BASIC WAY :D

Anyone know how to start on bass? Equipment, tutorials, lessons... ect.

I tend to like the bass in technical metal, jazz, death metal, and doom metal...

go buy you a good cheap used bass to start with, a small 30 watt practice amp and get tabs of songs you like off the internet and teach yourself. or you could find a person to give you lessons.

Good article. Actually I decided to use first 4, then 5 fingers on my own, not having read any articles. As I do not slap and pop my thumb is free. Normally it rests on the pick-up or neck, but when needed I can switch it into playing. As for developing fast picking, 3 fingers on one string is very useful.

I have a slight problem...
I tend to have a bit of pain in my left hand, mostly in the part between the thumb and the first finger, you know that part thats on the bridge. I dont get it much but I've noticed that on some songs I try to play I get it quite alot, like in Into Eternity - Identify. Also sometimes when I play Bach's Suite in G Major. But when I play slower or less fret-active (??) songs, like My Dying Bride or Judas Priest or stuff like that, I dont get it. I remember this pain from playing Classical guitar, I used to have it when trying to do 7th chords. I think it has to do with the pressure I use to press the frets, but I dunno, I cant control it that much really and I should've gotten stronger or more used to it because I'm playing for a while...

any advice?

Sounds like your pressing on the neck with your thumb too hard. Most people do that and don't notice it.

I need a recommendation for a decent beginner's bass for $200 max. That's $200 max. I don't need anyone to tell me to save up an additional few hundred. I need one at $200 max. Sorry to keep saying it, but whenever someone gives a budget and asks for a recommendation everything gets flooded with people saying they should save for more.

With that said, any recs?

Ibanez's Sound Gear Gio's I think are about $160.It's gonna be hard to get anything good under $200.
