Im 16, and I have been playing drums (with double bass) for about 5 or 6 years, and I don't want to sound like in to myself or something, but I am pretty fucking good at playing death metal and black metal and thrash and etc.

But, the only problem I have is that everyone where I live sucks at guitar and vocals. I mean seriously, they are just horrible. I also have been screaming for about 3 years so I can scream pretty good too. Also been playing guitar and I am ok I can play you know black metal shit and thrash , but death metal I haven't really tried.

Alright ANYWAY, on to the main point, yeah, everyone I have heard play guitar or scream is just horrible. I have at this point just stuck to messing around playing to death/black/thrash metal songs trying to get down every type of style and get as fast as I can etc but I am just getting to the point where I want to really play with some other people who are good, so where should I try to go to meet some people?

My friends don't even play any instruments so there no use, the people I've met that play guitar/scream suck, I mean shit?? Where did you guys meet your bandmates..? I am thinking most of yours is probs friends but I am totally screwed here..

I was asked by our guitarist and ex-drummer through a Danish metal/goth/whatever forum if I wanted to make a band with them. I actually don't have any idea where we found our keyboard player, but he was already part of the local metal scene (though not actively playing in any band), so I suppose someone just knew him from somewhere. Our guitarist just brought him to a rehearsal one day. Our bass player was one of my friends, whom I asked to join. We started writing songs, and now we have played concerts with bands like Turisas and Svartsot and have a full-length on the way. :nods:

I don't know where you're from, but finding musicians might be easier when you live in a city with a relatively solid metal scene (Copenhagen, in my case). I think the best you can do is keep looking for talented musicians in your general area. Check out different musician's forums. There's bound to be some, unless you live in a small deserted town in the middle of nowhere.

I met my vocalist in church as a child when we were still religious and he proposed that we formed a band. He went to school with our drummer, so that all sort of came together naturally.

Finding our guitarists was actually what was hardest for us. After several failed tryouts our drummer's friend proposed we let his girlfriend try out. Cynically, we agreed and she blew us away. We found out she was perfect for our band and she's been very enthusiastic and dedicated for most of the time she's been with us.

We tried out many a guitarist several months later to play rhythm guitar and actually found the musician who would complete our lineup by posting on craigslist. He tried out, and everything clicked. Here's the site:

I met the members of my last band like this:
I had been doing my own little music project, just recording guitar tracks and vox in my room and using drum software. I posted it on a myspace, and sent it around to all my friends. One of my friends showed it to one of his friends who was much more into metal than anyone I was friends with, and she flipped because no one liked metal at our school. So I started hanging with her and getting deeper into the metal scene, and found out she was in a band with her boyfriend and his brother, and eventually they asked me to join. On a side note, she is a fucking incredible guitarist. Check out her YouTube profile, because I have not seen another female guitarist of any age pull off what she has at 16-18 years old.

Right now I'm trying to put together another band, and I met a guitarist through my friend, and met another musician through him. It's all about networking. Get your music out there, let people know about your passion for music, post endlessly on different forums, go to local shows and look for musicians, post flyers, ads in newspapers, whatever you can do. Don't just think good musicians will find you by chance; really work towards finding them.

My guitarist, bassist, and I were all friends. Our guitarist and bassist were friends with our drummer so we tried him out. We had two friends come and try out for keyboards but they both really sucked. Eventually, my girlfriend joined the band as our keyboardist.

Well, I am in like 3 bands right now, and we are all gonna do something together which is strange and convenient and they are all really good.

I am pretty decent at death metal vocals, and all the things in-between but I can't do black metal. My friends are incredible at guitar, and decent at bass. I play guitar as well, and bass, and I write all the lyrics cause I am really good at that. They all go to my school so it's really easy to get out and play. However, the only good drummer at my school is into hardcore/metalcore and stuff like that, so we have to use a drum machine.

If my friends weren't good at metal and stuff, I probably wouldn't be in a band.

Bassist is my brother, when I upgraded from a starter guitar to a decent one, he bought a bass. Other guitarist has been a friend since high school and always loved metal, but didn't start playing guitar until I encouraged him to start playing when he was 19, a few years later and he is quite good. After years of drummers rotating in/out because though they were friends, one wasn't into metal at all, the other just sucked as a drummer. Current drummer has been a friend for many years, back to high school, originally doing some vocals around 5 years ago, but started playing drums about a month ago and can already do a better job than any other drummer I have worked with.

I met mine at school, but how I actually got to know them was from a close friend who was better friends with the other people in the band than I was, and we began to hang out a lot.

I'm in a situation kind of like this except for there are a lot of people that I can choose from. The only problem is that where I live everybody likes the shitty generic hardcore stuff (JFAC etc.) and I hate all of that.

I have known my Viper player for about 4 years but I wasn't friends with him until last year. I have known the bassist for about the same. I met the rhythm guitarist last year when I met the Viper dude, and I don't really know the dude on vox very well but we get along.

i met my guitarist a year ago. I was trying to break into the basement of our high school to see what was down there. I knew how to break in and pretty much do everything, but i needed someone to pick a lock for me. i asked a bunch of my friends if they new how t pick a lock and one of them showed me this dude. He never succeded, but a year later he picks strings for me instead (haha corny pun)

The last metal band I was in (circa 1998-2004), I knew the bassist from school and met the guitarist and vocalist at a Morbid Angel show. We exchanged contacts and took it from there. Since then, in metal, I've been doing it on my own since meeting people for legit extreme metal bands (death or black) in my neck of the woods has been shitty, and I can also have total control.

I met my current indie rock band through Craigslist.

Move to Atlanta, GA... There are a million great guitarists, bassists, and singers that just need a drummer to get a band going.

It's always drummers, it seems. That is what I have always had a hard time finding.

My band really 'started' when we met a drummer through a failed crust band.

I've stolen all the bandmates in my current two bands from other bands. It's fun.

I was lucky to meet the two amazing individuals that I proudly call bandmates at High school. Since we were about 14, we've just constantly played music together and gotten better together at our instruments. So compared to you man I feel quite lucky!

I go to a music college, I got put in my band for having compatible musical tastes and influences with my now bandmates, I didn't expect the band to glue together as well as it did. I've also started forming another band with an old friend who plays guitar and a drummer I know through him.

Well, I'm in a band, but we consist of two bassists only [haha], my friend Diego [back up bassist/lead vocalist] and me [lead bassist/back up vocalist, current writing guitarist], and the way we met was...

During lunch in one of my first days of school I saw him wearing a Kill Em' All shirt and a Metallica ninja star necklace [he and I compete to see who knows most about Metallica... he often surpasses me due to extensive research the past year or so whereas I haven't] and I started talking to him..

Turns out, he wanted to start a thrash band and I wanted to start a black/thrash band, and he was a vocalist at the time. So we got together, started talking about music and whatnot.. and then we started up our project "Xorcist". Last year he wanted to play bass after our first practice, so he was using my old bass and started learning, and now we have two bassists/vocalists in our 2-member band... haha!

Since then we have wrote quite a few songs, but due to me not being really a guitarist I don't think they are that great.. but we are still improving and working on our material :)

Ok ok, enough rambling for me now.

I had started hanging out with people at school with similar interest such as metal and guitar. I had known the drummer since 5th grade, The lead guitarist since kindergarten, and the rhythm guitarist since 6th grade. We all started jamming together, just playing metal songs we knew or improving and stuff. Things have gotten a little wacky though. I was originally the bassist because I own a good bass and bass amp, but I am way better at guitar than the rhythm guitarist. So know we have realized that he just can't operate at the same level as us, and now we have no lead and rhythm guitars, just guitarists. The rhythm guitarist doesn't even know that he has been peered out (like the Army Rangers), but he will probably find out when I keep playing guitar and not bass when we jam. The three of us in the band are really good (the best in the school) and for a picture, when i go to Guitar Center, I am one of the best there. I write most of the songs (which are really cool and complex), but the other guitarist writes songs too. Depending on who wrote the song, we trade playing lead and rhythm. If we both wrote it than we trade during the song (if we want). We have a nice blend of tastes, with all of us converting each other to each others tastes, which comprise all genres of metal, some metalcore and a little deathcore, progressive rock, jazz fusion, alt and hard rock, and some experimental stuff.

Anyways, sorry I got so off topic. Don't stress about meeting musicians, just look around as you go through life and you will probably find some. Notice I said LOOK not JUST SIT AND WAIT. You need to put some effort in finding them, not just hoping they will find you. Maybe put yourself up on Craigslist asking for people to jam. Don't ask them to be in a band just ask to have some no strings attached fun. That is a much better approach, don't you think. You can ask them to form a band later if you get along.
