I want to put a detuner on my guitar, so I can go from D to Drop C easily, especially because I have a floyd rose, and it's a bitch to change tunings, but I heard that it won't stay in tune when you use the detuner if you have a floyd rose. Is this true?

my old Kramer came with one pre-installed. not only could i not figure it out (maybe im just stupid), but it also prevents you from pulling back on the whammy bar (the whole reason i got a guitar with a floyd), so i took it off.

but i think it'd defeat the purpose if it didnt stay in tune while in use. i never read anyone saying that, actually.

Depends on what kind of floyd it is; if it is fully floating (recessed) the D-tuna probably won't fit in the first place.

Isn't there something you can put on the headstock or nut that'll do that? I remember seeing a live performance of Coal Chamber where the guitarist did it during the intro of "Loco". I think it's called a hipshot.

None of those things work with a fully floating tremolo. There is no way to detune the guitar instantly and also keep the other strings, without also using a tremolo stabilizer or blocker such as the ESP Arming Adjuster or the Tremolno.

Detuners are not floyd friendly, and floyds also make it very difficult to keep your guitar in tune unless they are set up perfectly and you are familiar with the setup.

It is not "very difficult" unless you are completely ignorant of how to set it up, or you have a cheapo licensed knock off. A real Floyd Rose bridge, when set up properly, will hold tune better than any other system on the market. Setting it up properly is not particularly difficult either.

An authentic Floyd that is setup up right will stay in tune, but not as well as pretty much every good guitar with a fixed bridge or a Kahler. The majority of players who need to ask questions about things like this don't know how to set them up right, and most of the guitars with floyd copies or authentic ones in retail stores are not set up well.

To threadstarter. Unless you have a guitar with a fixed bridge or Kahler trem, don't bother with the detuner. Just over complictes matters in tuning terms.

This is not true. My Floyded guitar will stay in tune for around a week before any minor tuning needs to be done, whereas my string through, Tune-o-matic guitar with locking tuners needs to be tuned every day.
