Hello. I am recording with a Tascam Digital Portastudio DP-02(CF), and a Shure SM-58 with Monster Cable XLRs.

My issue with the recording process is that I will have the faders all the way up, as well as the Master fader at it's peak, but the recorded sound is very quiet. This puzzles me (but then again most things about recording does just that) even as my Amp is at ear peircing volumes and the mic is stuffed right up to the speaker.

Anyway, my main questions are:
1. Is there something about this fucking machine that I don't know?
2. Am I a complete nimrod for trying to record my guitar tracks with a Vocal Mic? (I got the mic for free)

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

From what I know, the level of the faders only really make a difference for the mixing stage, so check that the gain/level knob is set at the right level.

When the online video page loads, make sure that your volume slider under the video screen is not moved all the way down.....chances are this is whats wrong, if you can hear music via media player and itunes.....

i don't know about the machine, but vocal mics are ussually the best way to record guitar. the shure sm57/58 being the most popular for recording guitar.

of course if it's a shitty mic/shitty mic cable, that would explain it

Check the trim pots for the inputs, as well as the levels on the meter when recording. I don't think the master fader matters much when recording.
