I just started what may or may not be a one-man band. It's basically black metal, but I like to call it "eldritch metal". After playing punk for almost twenty years, black metal guitar has proved to be very difficult. I'm open to any tips and techniques for playing one-man black metal.

Rewriting a track I did for an online project which I'm part of thanks to this community. It's a whole different kind of challenge as an online project creating songs. It's not as dynamic as in the rehearsal room obviously.

I'm almost finished with the first song of a concept album I'm working on (it just needs one or two more vocal tracks). At first, I hit a snag when I was going for more of a black metal sound (black metal is hard to play when you've never done it), but a friend of mine suggested I just do what comes naturally which (duh) was an amazing idea because I never really fit in any kind of box anyway, and there are instruments everywhere. I decided I would start recording on the anniversary of my father's suicide because it's kind of like Halloween; the veil between life and death becomes very thin, and one of the characters in the album is based on him. The first song kinda sounds like Zao did a bunch of acid with Pavement on Saturn. I'm pretty excited.

Been busy rehearßing, for a micro live gig. Im putting on in June, even though these songs have been released. I still find myself experimenting, with old material. This I will put out as a cd, later this year.

Finally recorded the vocals of one of my funeral doom tracks. The rest of the song was finished, lyrics were ready but didn't got the time / inspiration to record it. I'm happy with the result and I'm currently writing an outro track simply containing sombre riffs and extremely slow. Not sure if I'll include drum and bass to this track. I quess not.

Almost about to release my BM band's debut "album" (might only last for 15 mins), and I'm super pumped. I helped out a bit with the songwriting and contributing backing vocals, but largely did synths. After a year of rehearsals and homemade mixing with Reaper, it feels great to contribute to the metal pantheon. Expecting a release later in June. We might get a small gig as an opening band for a bigger local one, so there's that to look forward to. That said, though I've played live with such a set-up before, it'll feel weird using a tiny-ass MIDI keyboard and a laptop for a metal gig lol.

Released this week my new funeral doom metal album called Doom. Released on CDr for 3 euros, Bandcamp, Spotify and some other services.
Now actually thinking about what's next.
Also working on a slam death metal side project. Still looking for other musicians to record.

Survived a heroin addiction, lost touch with old bandmates and local musician friends (to put it mildy), then lost all my drum equipment in the big LA flood. So now i'm just playing DOOM instead of playing doom haha.

I've started playing guitar again after a 20 year break. I've had my new guitar for about 5 months but have had very little chance to practice due to kids and job demands. I've been on a staycation for 2 weeks now and I've been able to play every day. I've sucked hard over these past months, but now I've been able to get through some old thrash and death songs so that it at least sounds like the same song. I'm sure you've all noticed that playing music makes you appreciate that music even more. I need to find more time!

I know it makes me appreciate it even more. Also I feel it gives me the freedom to make things I want to hear in the combos I think are interesting.

^Right on, Crossed From Existence has a solid intensity. I dig Upon the Mount.

What I'm up to: I put out a big compilation of my material a couple months ago and now I'm in a needless limbo. Lots of partially finished tracks. Lots of songs written and yet to be recorded. Not really doing anything.
I'd like to at least get all instruments tracked for one song this weekend, while also trying to figure out how to better promote my recent compilation.

I finished up instruments for a couple tracks.
I wanted to write and record something totally from scratch, so I did that, too. Good news, it has a different sound than I usually get--intensely dissonant. And I think it's one of my strongest tracks yet. Bad news, I only intended to write a song that was 30 seconds or less and it quickly grew beyond that. I was hoping to track several intense quick songs that I could release soon or put on a split. It's a good problem. Just not what I was aiming for.

I'm currently writing for my 3rd release under The Madness and The Madman (progressive thrash). Aiming for more aggressive thrash and death metal vibes.....making it a bit more unorthodox yet memorable. For vocals gonna focus on screaming only instead of previously doing all 3 styles...yelling, screaming and singing....also far less melodic lead wise with less simple major and minor scales being used....and more augmented, chromatic, and whole note choices. It's still very much in the works but I think I've dialed in from a production stand point how I want it to sound....now it's just the fun part...creating. I'm at 7 tracks thus far aiming for 8 tracks.

I've been releasing music independently for 5 years now. The first half of my discog is pretty poor in quality, although I still believe the songwriting (primarily lyrics) is kind of decent. I began with straightfoward atmospheric black metal but have expanded my influences over the years to include other great artists like Neurosis and Townes Van Zandt. It's in the past three albums where I really feel like I've developed an understanding of the entire music production process and am able to self produce albums that are not limited by your typical lofi "bedroom black metal" quality.

https://apathybm.bandcamp.com/

My most recent release is a 53 minute long-form track titled, The Bridge, produced over the past two years. The timing is impeccable right now that Blood Incantation has just blown up with their own long-form song, so I hope this represents a renewed interest in the extended storytelling medium, since the last song I recall getting this kind of recognition was The Cavern by Inter Arma.

I also used to be a reasonably active content creator on Youtube, doing videos breaking down my songwriting process as introductory instructions for amateur musicians, particularly in reference to black metal. The funny thing is, at the time I was still mostly discovering a lot on my own, so I may have been talking out of my ass, but still I did a couple of videos I'm quite happy with and a few were able to gain traction, especially this one on writing black metal riffs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETGYLRaheFE

Funny enough my most popular video is the one following on black metal tone, yet it is one of my least favorite videos. The world works in strange ways. I have since slowed down significantly on Youtube activity simply because I prefer writing music far more than making videos, which is an incredibly tedious task.

currently working on a sprawling conceptual epic divided into five suites that will span several hours in its entirety.

Conception of the Deities:

Primordial
Conception
Communion
Wrath
Cessation

Those are the suites and each is comprised of several movements. Genre wise it's Post-industrial/Ritual ambient/Glitch/Illbient/Musique concrete/Ethereal wave/Ambient dub/Field recordings/Tape music/Horror synth.

I'm really giving it the treatment.

Really trying to master a blackened death metal guitar tone. Trying to sound like bestial warlust. I get the tuning, but my tone is just too fuckin noisy and inaudible at times. Any tips would be totally fuckin appreciated. Cheers

Right now I am righting songs for my two piece black metal band. Two songs have their lyrics written, but i want to have at least 6 before we are gonna start making the album. Riffs are kinda hard to write because I don't wanna sound too close to songs that have been done. it will be my first album so I don't want it to suck.

My guitarist and I met up today to brainstorm a route for our next tour, which will be a week tour up North in August. Aside from that, we have six tracks completed and one left to whip up before the next album is finished. I'm pretty excited about it.
