As a longtime metalhead I feel like I can guess the genre of any metal band just by looking at their logo... so I created a little game to do exactly that.

It uses bands info from metal-archives.com and you can play it here: https://guess.cosciug.com/

Thanks for checking it out!

Fun game! I sent it to a few of my friends too.
Would love it if it had scores, like 'longest streak of correct guesses' or 'X of Y correct answers'. Also if I didn't have to update the page for every answer.

It also seems like the randomization isn't 100% as I got Fantomas twice within a few minutes.

Thank you Zerberus! Good point regarding adding a 'score'

It's unlikely to get the same band many times (there are 500 bands in the game), but it happens

I'm curious, have you added those 500 bands manually, or?

I've gathered bands data (name, genre, logo, country..) from the site programmatically, so it could be used for the game

I did have the same band appear twice over a few minutes. And at least one of the images wouldn't load.

This is quite neat, a good little challenge.

This is pretty fun! It's pretty easy if you know the band, especially if it's a relatively famous band, e.g. Destruction, Dimmu Borgir, etc.

Otherwise, sometimes you can easily tell by the logo: Unreadable w/upside down crosses, or in some variation of gothic font= probably black metal; unreadable but with dripping gore= probably death metal; a three-word phrase such as Scald the Pretender, As Autumn Menstrates, or Inherit the Placenta= probably some kind of deathcore; etc.

But a lot of the more obscure bands I wasn't familiar with, or had barely heard of if at all, I couldn't tell, or I didn't know whether to classify them as "Symphonic power metal" vs. "Progressive power metal" vs. "Gothic Metal" etc.

And how would you classify Dethklok? (who popped up:) "Cartoon metal?" "Fictitious metal?" (I picked "melodic death metal" and it scored it as correct, but come on- that's not even an actual band.)

I'm addicted to it though. Fun game.

Good catch! Hopefully I fixed it now

All genres in the game are the same as on metal-archives :)

Thanks for checking it out!

I did something like 20 rounds and got about 15 or so right, though I lost count cause I wasn't paying attention lol, and I already knew who Pentagram, Sacred Reich and Neo Obliv...were so those I obviously guessed correctly.

There really is something to the style bands use for their logos.

Jagged, spiky fonts: thrash, sometimes heavy

Cursive: power, symphonic, gothic

Old gothic: folk, black

Squiggly: death, black

Sans serif: progressive

Wow, good work! That's a fun little ditty.

It's pretty revealing too, really. I couldn't get an answer wrong. Admittedly I knew probably 90% of the bands before I quit, but when i'd never heard of/seen the logo before, it was still instinctively easy to guess the correct answer.
It's a testament to how rigidly established and sometimes even dogmatic almost every aspect of a heavy metal band can be. I mean, I love it though.

I like this manual! I'd add:
Pentagram or inverted cross: black, sometimes death

I got The Obsessed wrong, even though I'm really familiar with the band- I even own a couple of their CD's, have seen them live, etc. But I didn't know whether to call them "Traditional Heavy Metal" or "Doom Metal." A case can be made for either of those terms, and I wouldn't argue it either way.

Updated the game by adding a scoring system! You'll now engage in rounds, each consisting of 10 bands, and receive a final score at the end.

I remembered playing this a few years back when I still pretty new to the genre. Revisiting it is a bit of a nostalgic trip for me.

Fun concept but I felt like I was cheating since I already knew most of the bands that came up. It would probably have been tougher if the bands were more obscure.

Thought the same thing when I played it. Still though, I did enjoy it.

I'd like to see something similar, but for album artwork. First thing that comes to mind is the stereotypical Ed Repka thrash cover where there is one central figure and a bunch of crap going down around them.

Yeah, I think including or opting for more obscure bands would make it more fun. For newbies it wouldn't make a difference since they don't know the bands either way, and it makes it more challenging for veterans who know most fairly well-known bands.

C'mon guys. You know what we need to do. We need to run a poll to gather a few hundred non-conforming logos, add them to the game and then dump them in blocks on random unsuspecting players.

As many of you requested, now you can change bands selection in the game to less known bands!

I was doing pretty well on that last round until I got to "Broken Image Link." I've never heard of Broken Image Link and had no idea what genre they could possibly be.
So, I guessed wrong.

Nice work, the obscure band selection is cool.

What's the deal with 'Slammable Folk Metal'? This choice popped up quite frequently, it surely can't be too hard to think of 4 actual subgenres to choose from?
If it's intended as a joke, it got old after the first time.

That said, the choice 'Lars' under the band selection did make me chuckle.

Nice, love the new update! It makes it much more challenging. Now we just need a leaderboard ;)

Thanks everyone! I also added possibility to play only Latin American / Asian / African bands which can be very interesting
