TANKIST is an Estonian thrash metal band formed in 2013. They sculpt their style around the old school thrash metal core, at times boldly digressing from the beaten path. After a raw and straightforward start, they already became a different entity with the debut LP “Unhuman” which aimed for an eccentric progressive approach. The album gathered a number of positive reviews upon its release on The Metal Archives and elsewhere, with veteran reviewers like MA's CHAIRTHROWER stating: "Most impressive is the fact none of the tracks are repetitive – not an easy feat when it comes to thrash. The twin guitars and polymorphic battery eschew cookie cut patterns while allowing for repeated listens thanks to all the little nuances and derivative tangents within."

By now, Tankist has finished recording their second full-length "Forced Equal" and is currently in contact with labels for whom to license the production and distribution of physical formats. Stylistically a mix of thrash, black and death metal with traits of dark avant-garde, the record is centered around the topic of Soviet forced labor camps and is due to be released sometime in early 2023.

Tankist Opens Most Gruesome Pages of History with New Song "Paragraph 58"

Estonian thrash metal band Tankist released a brand new song "Paragraph 58", taking a closer look at Article 58 of the Soviet penal code, which was behind millions of unjustified arrests in the Soviet Union.

With this song and the upcoming album in general, Tankist has decided to take a firm stand against all totalitarian regimes on the example of Soviet repressions. At a time when Russia is once again attacking the free world, it is important to remember how hollow and misleading any Russian arguments on human rights and saving their people actually are. Slogans in support of the aggressor country's choices are alarmingly common in the western society, but let's keep in mind that promotion of true freedom cannot go hand in hand with the denial of historical crimes and the banning of repression museums – practices that Russia is self-righteously implementing to this very day.

The single is available on most major streaming services.

Thrash Metal Meets Choir Singing: Tankist Fires On All Cylinders With New Live Footage Video Single “The More Equal”

Estonian thrash metal band Tankist released their new music video ”The More Equal” today, which was filmed during the band’s show at Estonia’s biggest metal festival Hard Rock Laager. The highly energetic track features powerful male choir singing rarely used in the genre and is the band’s second single from their upcoming album “Forced Equal”.

”I made it my goal to capture Tankist’s style in an up-tempo way,” said the song’s main author Martin Väinmaa about the creation process, “I showed my version to the band and Kevin made it sound even more like Tankist”. He added that the solos were inspired by Yngwie Malmsteen’s classic quote "more is more”.

Tankist’s frontman Kevin Marks pointed out that it is the first time in Tankist’s history where he didn’t write one hundred percent of the music, with other members having more creative input than ever before. “Also note the massive male choir that we summoned specifically for this recording,” he emphasized the powerful culmination of the song, “some experienced choir singers as well as musicians from the Estonian metal scene contributed with their voices to make this track truly shine.”

1000 Layers of AI-generated Art - Tankist's New Music Video Stuns With Imagery

The Estonian metal band Tankist presents their new music video for the track "The Gulag Archipelago". With the title referring to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's magnum opus, the song sets the scene for their upcoming concept album dealing with the gruesome topic of Soviet forced labor camps. The band recruited Italian director Moreno Tempini who used innovative AI-technology Midjourney to create the visuals. Containing more than a thousand image layers, the animation is carried out as one continuous shot, taking the viewer on a journey through hellscapes of Gulags.

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity to learn more about this atrocious piece of history and I’d like to thank the band for their trust in my vision,” said Moreno about the creation of the video. He added that after several iterations, from the version 1 to the version 5 of Midjourney, he found a way to bring those images to life and create a world for the amazing music made by Tankist. “The whole process has been very inspiring and interesting and I can't wait to explore it even further,” he concluded.

Tankist’s frontman Kevin Marks described how the Soviet Union’s lust for power and its fury against human nature led to the mental and physical destruction of countless people: “it’s a very painful historical period for Estonians and other East-European nations.” According to Kevin, Moreno understood the band’s wishes immediately and created a positively disgusting and oppressive work of art that not only illustrates this single, but the whole concept of the new album.
