What are some good Christian bands? Most of what I have heard hasn't been so great from Christian rock and metal. I am not a fan of most Christian Metalcore bands. I like The Showdown however. I heard they were a christian band. What are some good Christian bands like that?

Also, do you know any bands that have covered Christmas songs? Thanks.

Well as far as the covering Christmas songs... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Twisted_Christmas

I do not know anything about Christian music so I will stay out of that one.

I never even knew there were christian based metal bands, even if I did know, I wouldn't be able to help you. Proud satanist here.

Trouble is essential.

In fact, a lot of really, really good classic doom metal has christian themes. Trouble is just the best IMO.

Listening to their music is nearly akin to a spiritual journey.

Very few bands have such an impact on me as Trouble, even if I'm not christian by any means.

I still see no problem with listening to Trouble alongside Funeral Mist though.

Also, Stryper suck the big donkey penis, and all christian black metal I've ever been in contact with should generally be avoided by any self respecting person.

Mortification also suck major balls.

Not into something and not knowing are completely different things. There are countless Christian metal bands and I have a hard time believing you were unaware of their existence.

I honestly had no idea christian based metal bands existed, believe what you want, but keep in mind, I have no reason to lie to you.

Neither of these bands are like the one you cited because they aren't metalcore but King's X have their moments and Trouble are pretty good.

Kings X isn't Christian anymore though because of the reaction when the lead singer came out as gay.

I'm absolutely, militantly atheist, but Trouble have some of the best songs in metal, period. Also, Stryper's 'To Hell With the Devil' is a fucking monster of a tune - both hilarious and headbangable.

Kryst The Conqueror. It ain't bad, really, but I suspect the Christian element is rather tongue-in-cheek.

http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=3048
Antestor seem to be getting quite a bit of praise for their latest album. Dunno, haven't heard it.

http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=34307
Becoming The Archetype are a metalcoreish band... they also seem to be getting quite a bit of praise from the reviews, but I'm slightly skeptical myself. But I hate metalcore, so what do I know, right?

I like a bit of the Christian stuff. Not really the preachy stuff because that gives me headaches nowadays, but rather stuff which is about the more esoteric themes and such. I quite like Lengsel as far as Christian metal goes, as they have really good lyrics and the music itself is very expressive, as well as avoiding the trap which all the assorted Horde clones fall into by taking the black metal aesthetic and turning it into something which actually works with the band's themes. I've only heard their first album but it is really good unblack.

Deuteronomium, and Immortal Souls are two Finnish groups that come to mind. Both are Christian bands. Deuteronomium kinda have a "death n' roll" thing goin. Check out their first EP Tribal Eagle, that's the only thing of their's I like. Immortal Souls are a melodic death group and are alright, but they don't bring anything new to the table. If you really want to hear some good stuff you should check out Acoustic Torment. Their first album "My Hope Is in You" is pretty good. They're kinda death/black metal, still pretty good though.

This I feel I need to second, as it is 100% aligned with the way I percieve christianity in metal as well. This is part of the reason why Trouble rules, while Mortification and Stryper are just lame.

That and the actual music.....

Is there a difference between a Christian band and a band that sings about Christianity? It may be a stupid question, but I'm curious.

Virgin Black.

Absolutely amazing band. Very dramatic opera/gothic type stuff with a few hints of death metal for flavor. They call themselves "spiritual Christians", so they aren't Christians per se', but they do talk about God and Jesus, and their songs have a strong religious undertone.

I'd also like to promote Antestor again. That is the be-all-and-end-all of christian metal. Beautiful.

There is alot of really good christian metal bands. Horde was just awesome. I really Jayson would release another album. Extol used to be a great band. They lost it with thier latest album. It was gayer than eight guys blowin' nine; the extra dick goes in the ear. Antestor is just amazing. Thew can create awesome christian black metal and keep the cold atmosphere. I love all of thier albums.

On a side note, Living Sacerfica, Zao and Demon Hunter really ain't that bad as far as metalcore can go.

A Plea for Purging - deathcore, kind of catchy guitars

With Blood Comes Cleansing - more deathcore, pretty good high vocals, their album 'Horrors' is good

Impending Doom - alright brutal deathcore

Seven Last Words of Christ - new deathcore group, no album out yet. You can find their demo all over the internet, pretty good stuff

As I Lay Dying - prob already know them, but fairly good metalcore

Becoming the Archetype - kind of progressive-ish metalcore

Antestor - really good symphonic 'black' metal

Crimson Moonlight - great 'black' metal, one of the best christian groups

Morphia - very melodramatic death/doom metal. pretty good stuff, though

Virgin Black - really dark doom metal, great stuff

Frost Like Ashes - alright black/death metal type stuff

Immortal Souls - moderately good melodic death, i would only recommend the album 'Winterreich'

The Devil Wears Prada - metalcore, almost screamo though, i like it.

Underneath the Gun - young deathcore group, kind of fun

That's all the christian bands in my library.

Tortured Conscience-Some pretty dang good brutal-ish death metal with laughable lyrics and a cover of 'The Little Drummer Boy' so it's like getting two for the price of one with regards to this thread:
http://www.myspace.com/torturedconscience

Becoming the Archetype-really excellent cor-ish melodeath. Their latest one leans more towards symphonic melodeath than core, but it is really good stuff:
http://www.myspace.com/becomingthearchetype

Antestor-trve kvlt gr1m frostb1tt3n n0rw3gi4n wh1te metal. Really pretty good stuff:
http://www.myspace.com/antestorband

Also, Dream Theater have some definite Christian themes. And you already know The Showdown, so there goes a lot of my thunder. :(

Armageddon are an alright Christian band, that play sort of NWOBHM-style prog/power metal.

Ask a forum dedicated to Christian music. There are many.
