Let's start a new thread solely for grindcore. My reasoning behind this is that surely many of you would agree with me that bands like Napalm Death and Repulsion shouldn't go in the same help thread as bands like As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, and the other metalcore acts and deathcore acts like Suicide Silence (just naming some big names here). It seems grindcore was thrown into the last thread just because the term ends with 'core.'

So how about a help thread solely for grindcore so fans of the genre don't have to filter through so many posts about metalcore/deathcore?

If no one objects, be this the new Grindcore Help Thread?

There are way to many help threads...

If this thread isn't locked, I reccomend Benumb to any grind fan who hasn't listened to them yet, especially the album "Withering Strands of Hope"

I'm all for this. Lumping grindcore with death- and metalcore in the same thread was beyond retarded.

Allow me to point out that, practically speaking, the death metal thread can generally be used for the purpose of death/grind recommendations. Between the death metal thread and the -core shit thread, I think that grindcore is pretty well-covered by the existing threads already. If you really don't want to go into the -core thread, a sentiment which I share, then I think you're pretty safe sticking to the death metal thread.

Well, there's a lot of grind that isn't heavily influenced by death metal, like Black Army Jacket, Apartment 213 etc.

Apartment 213 are Powerviolence, not Grind. BAJ are all over the place.

Pig Destroyer is on the M-A listed as just Grindcore. Usually the caveat is that a Death designation is listed along with it. Some exceptions I guess.

I think the reason there isn't a straight grind thread is that pure grindcore is really more hardcore influenced than metal. Or at least there are equal amounts. Pure grind is usually not considered metal by the archives, and so I think the mods wanted the grind to stay a lot in the death metal thread so as to stay on the deathgrind side of things.

Oh ok. I always thought that PV and grind were interchangeable terms.

Of course. I'm just saying that, while it may not be the technically accurate to go to the death metal help thread for those sorts of recommendations, I don't see why anyone would care if you did ask for recs of that sort in that thread.

There are quite a few bands listed as just grindcore. Agathocles, Nasum, Birdflesh, Fuck... I'm Dead, Gore Beyond Necropsy, etc.

trying to argue the metal-ness of grind on this forum is a futile endeavour, i found this when I suggested doing an MA grind survey and came up against a serious amount of flack, and I doubt things have changed much here since then!

Grind is a genre that is not, as a whole, distinctly metal or distinctly punk but is a fusion of the two that can vary between pure extreme hardcore/crust with minimal metal influence to crusty, raw death metal/hardcore fusions. It depends on the individual bands. Repulsion were a mix of thrash metal, hardcore, crust and early death metal. Napalm Death started out as metal-influenced hardcore and eventually swayed back and forth between death metal and grind. Anal Cunt is basically noisecore. Agoraphobic Nosebleed play hardcore at lightspeed. And so on.

Actually, Napalm Death started as a band mixing Crass/Subhumans style Anarcho Punk and good old hardcore, they of course later moved into the grindcore style with... Hell, I think it was the Scum demo. Also interesting is that the opening to "What Man Can Do" on the Hatred Surge demo is pretty much what Varg would later do over 8 minute songs in Burzum. ;)

Hmm, I think Agoraphobic Nosebleed do have a significant death metal influence, though obviously not enough to get them onto the site. Lightspeed is correct though. :D

That's true. Oversimplification on my part for the sake of not turning my paragraph into a clusterfuck.

Where the shit really hits the fan with regards to grindcore confusion is when you start discussing goregrind and it's derivatives, like pornogrind.

As far as I'm concerned, most goregrind is not grind in the slightest. Perhaps it's start in Reek of Putrefaction maybe, but after that, not grind.

Pornogrind sort of strikes me as the missing link between goregrind, it has the rulage of grindcore with both the shitty and awesome parts of goregrind. AKA, the vocals (shitty) and the grooves (awesome). Honestly, I think "death noise" is a better descriptor of goregrind.

Yeah, the only Carcass release that was really grind was Reek. Symphonies was definitely more death than grind and Necroticism was just straight-up death metal. Still great, classic albums, but not grind.

I was really more referring to goregrind, not Carcass, but whatever. :D

I usually only bother with Symphonies when it comes to Carcass, and I don't bother with Carcass very often.

Goregrind, Carcass, it all comes out the same colour in the end.

I listen to Necroticism a lot as well, and the title track of Heartwork is a really fun headbanger though the rest of the album ends up fair unimpressive, but not really offensively bad as such.

Well for me, Carcass breaks down as....

Reek: Tolerable, though a repetitive.

Symphonies: Awesome, though can be a bit dull. I mostly just listen to Ruptured in Purulence and maybe another song or two once in a while and don't bother with the rest.

Necroticism: Lame production and boring song writing, though Incarnated Solvent Abuse and Corporal Jigsore Quandary aren't bad for a listen now and then, though it's a rare event.

Heartwork: An abomination upon man.
Swansong: Haven't heard it.

Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment is the only thing I would generally listen to by them, due to it's flesh ripping awesomeness.

Well, at least we agree on something. Heartwork is indeed an abomination and Symphonies can be a bit dull at times.

I guess that *again* depends alot on the individual bands.
Stuff like Haemorrhage or Regurgitate are Goregrind and sound quite a bit like "normal" Grind.
Other Goregrind bands dont have much in common with, lets call it "old school" Grind and are much more focussed on groove, but they are by definition part of the "Grind scene".
I am all for sub genres, because they help describing how a band exactly sounds, but Goregrind is an established term and should just stand as such.
If we start questioning genre names, can we please rename Metalcore into something else? I hate how crap music like that gets confused with "real" hardcore/punk influanced Metal.

Best Grindcore band is Rotten Sound. It is brutal and fast.

Less discussion of the nature of grindcore, more discussion of the bands. I have been looking for a grindcore album on par with Phobia's 'Cruel' for a long time.
