There are many drummers who are also vocalists like Proscriptor of Absu, Brann Dailor of Mastodon or if you want a more popular example Phil Collins. All of them can sing and drum at the same time live, I think it's mostly a matter of the right equipment.

Don't forget Chris Reifert (Autopsy). As for equipment, not much. The simple solution would be just mic your vocals.

Even Flo Mounier did backing vocals. If you can do vocals with those drums, I'm sure it's possible for anyone to achieve. He used a headset though, much easier than craning the neck while playing to sing into a microphone.

I need advice on a few things.

1. In my band, I do a lot of slow blast beats. (the beat used throughout Transilvanian Hunger. After a minute or so, my leg and foot get really tired and will soon cramp. Is there any technique that can prevent this or is it purely stamina practice?

2. When doing blast beats (at this speed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW6rmhjpctU ), my flying finger techniqe gets sloppy very quickly, and I totally lose it. Again, is this just a practice and get better thing?

Your right on both counts, it's a question of practice practice practice, no technique will help you get around this fact.

For the first problem, set your metronome to a comfortable speed and do the slow blast for 10-20...maybe even 30 minute stretches. Do this for a while and you should see a lot of improvement.

For point 2, slow it down, again use a metronome, and play for extended periods of time where you can blast without tensing up and whatnot.

My neighbors are really going enjoy me playing a blast beat for 30 minutes!

About the snare problem, I can't play slow because I lose the bouncing affect and it just becomes hitting the snare without technique.

Yeah they will love you! I use an ekit, stops the neighbours from wanting to cave my skull in.

Anywho, thats your problem right there, you should be able to use your fingers and control the bounce at any speed. Slow it down and start learning to control the bounce properly, cause if you can't do it slowly then I guarantee that you aren't doing it correctly at high speed...which is why your blasting gets sloppy.

The technique you want to master is called the freestroke, it's all about using the natural rebound of the drum, you need to start slowly with it to learn it properly because it does not come naturally for most drummers.

Thoughts on it?

I would care less for the double bass, because you don't necessarily need it. There are so many drummers, even in metal that use double bass only rarely or none at all. What's really important is that the kit sounds good. If it sounds bad, you're screwed even with double bass.

Why does a band actually still bother finding a drummer? Why not just use a drum machine?

we actually use beat craft :) ,but nothing beats real drums.
and we are going to buy this used set because it's not so loud(since we want to put it in the basement)
how do I know if it sounds good or bad?

BTW:as I remember there is patches that are used to make drums more quiet? are they practical?

D'oh!

I had slammers on my bass drum, used to protect the skin from the constant bashing of the beaters. They made the drum slightly quieter, but not a considerable amount. I've never seen patches to deafen the sound, but I'm sure they exist. As long as they don't get in the way of playing (i.e. they restrict your ability to play fast/in time/at all), they'd be practical.

look, I'm a drummer myself, all I wanted to know, is what's better about using a real drummer rather than a drum machine, apart from the fact that drummers can help writing music (which they usually don't which is kind of a piety).

Because there's a whole range of sounds that a live drummer can produce that a drum machine can't.

Did any of you guys watch the new George Kollias DVD? I heard it's really good but I haven't been able to find it yet. I was really disappointed with Flo's DVD. Already that I'm not a fan of his playing, his DVD really didn't teach me a lot.

I couldn't imagine Kollias being a much better teacher, English is his second language and he's not exactly spectacular at speaking it.

He has pretty good technique, however, and something could probably gained simply from watching him play.

Well unlike Flo, George actually explores a lot of different patterns and rhythms, plus he goes into advanced multi-pedal stuff.

Flo's DVD is rubbish and is a complete waste of time, all he did was go through the basic's of metal drumming, I think George's sticks mostly to more advanced drumming concepts.

I agree, Flo's DVD was a piece of crap. I was never a fan of his drumming anyways. You can barely learn anything from Flo's DVD.

I have been playing various forms of metal (mostly death and melodic death) on drums for a couple years now, on a starter set (that is now beat to hell) and was looking to upgrade my set. I thought Yamaha's DTXTREME III Special electronic set
http://www.yamaha.com/drums/drumproduct ... ID=5040587
looked good. But I was wondering if I could get another drummers opinion.
Thanks.

I can't speak for their electric drumsets, as I'm only really familiar with Rolands, but Yamaha's acoustic drums are pretty bitchin.

Hey guys. I've been thinking about getting a new set. I don't really ever get a chance to play mine, so I was going to buy one that I can play at my house rather than having to go to my aunts.

I am looking for something with 2 floor toms and 1 rack tom opposed to 2 racks and one floor.

http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend ... sku=500634

My local music store is selling this for the same price. Is this a good set? What do you think I should go for? Nothing too expensive.

I'm not gonna dignify that with a response. Its better for the drummer to be there. Using a drum machine would be more work cause if they wanted to play live, they need a drummer. Get The Point?

Anyway, I have a dream of being endorsed by the drum companies of Zildjian Cymbals, Tama Drums and Hardware, Roland Triggers, Gibraltar Hardware, Audix Microphones, and Aquarian Drum Heads, and I'm only twelve years old!!!! I think I'm suffering from depression. My head is not in the right place when I drum sometimes, I think I suck.
I post videos on youtube, and I don't get alot of feedback. I only get 25 goddamn views, and 1 comment. I look at videos of drummers like Chris Adler, Derek Roddy, George Kollias, etc. , 26,467 goddamn views. Am I doing something wrong? I don't think the companies will want me. I don't have friends, if I have any friends, there my family because I don't spend alot of time around people my age. People think I have an attitude. Please watch this video:

Rate, comment, view, send if to your friends, and please, GIVE ME ADVICE!!!!!

Good for you man, Seriously. It takes years to do that shit. Good luck. On the drums/vocals, you know the thing people like Flo from Cryptopsy uses, get some of them, or have a mic to the side.

Anyway, I'm trying to go oldschool Lamb of God/Chris Adler kit for my new kit since they are my top influences. My gear will consist of remo heads, Pusle sticks and drums, Pearl Hardware, Axis Pedals, and Zildjian Cymbals. I've played the same kit for 5 goddamn years. Its hard, but I deal with it. It will take $ 2,873.03 for the kit. I would like to know if I am making the right choices. Here is my lineup

My advice is don't try to be a lamb of god clone. It's always good having a vision of the sound you want, but be aware tuning and even the room you are in make as big a difference as the drums themselves, and getting the exact same drums as someone else without first having heard them will not necessarily get you the sound you want. Production, the room, the heads, the tuning... all makes a huge difference in the sound

Exactly right about the tuning. What really bugs me is when drummers just throw tape, moon gels, and o-rings on their drums just because they can't figure out what head gets what sound and how to tune the drums right. Danny Carey of Tool once said something along those lines. That's one guy who knows his stuff about drumming.

I have the rings on my drums, but they came with the kit. I do find that they stifle reverberation, though, which I like.

I found out yesterday that my bass drum skin has a nice tear in it. There goes a lot of money getting it re-skinned. :(

For stifling reverberation I've used Remo Clear Pinstripes tuned medium-loosely. Seems to work well for me.

What kind of bass heads do you use? I've got the Aquarian Superkick II on the batter side and an Aquarian Floating Resonant (something like that, it has a floating port in the center with their patented ring around it). Great combination.

I might be mistaken, but I think I have a Remo skin. This time around, I might go for something tougher.

I bought a double-kick slammer to protect the skin (if you don't know what they are, they're padding you stick on the skin to protect it. Don't worry - I didn't know what they were until I saw them at the store ;)), and after I stuck it on, it fell off after one day. Maybe I didn't let the glue set enough, but for $8, I wasn't expecting much.

Yes, the pad is called a "Falam Slam". The only pad that is worth getting is the Remo, whether it be the double or single kick version. Ignore the claims of the others because most of them don't allow the true sound of the bass drum to be heard. There's some that have metal inside of them, while others are basically plastic. Remo's Falam Slam Pad is made of Kevlar and is by far the best.

As far as tom heads, I use Evans EC2 Clear Heads. I got the idea after seeing that Aaron Harris, the drummer for ISIS, used them. I was always in love with his tom sound so I adapted his heads to my set. I prefer my heads to sing and be fairly higher pitched. Well, kinda. I have a 13" on a snare stand (so it can resonate more) and a 16" floor tom. You're usually supposed to tune the drums relative to each other, but I love tuning my rack tom high and my floor tom low, that way each one becomes its own instrument.

So the Falam Slam works better than the Evans skin-pads? I've used those, and have not been very satisfied with the sound or the feel... and I always end up ripping it off, with the adhesive taking much of the skin with it. I've just been very careful with how hard I hit my kick skins now, but does the Falam Slam actually work that well, at least in comparison to the Evans one?

Oh yeah, it works much better. I've had the same double-kick Falam Slam for over a year and it still has some life left in it. I do need to replace it and the batter head soon though. What kind of head do you use for the batter side of your kick?

Ok, I'm in a band where I play lead drums and soloing guitar, and our band was only playing instrumenuals. Then we decided to have one of us do vocals, and it turns out I have the best vocal range out of us. I don't mind being also vocalist, but I have a few concerns, like wouldn't the drums typically overpower the vocals? Any and all advice will be great. Thanks.

There are many drummers who are also vocalists like Proscriptor of Absu, Brann Dailor of Mastodon or if you want a more popular example Phil Collins. All of them can sing and drum at the same time live, I think it's mostly a matter of the right equipment.

Zildjian ZBT Splash Cymbal 12"

Zildjian ZBT Rock Ride Cymbal 20"

I am looking for a very tight bass sound, low toms, a bright sounding ride, and a high-pitched snare drum, all categories Chris Adler used on New American Gospel. Any Suggestions?

Stay away from the Planet Z's, ZBT's, ZXT's, and ZHT's! They are terrible cymbals. If you're going balls out for a kit, go balls out on cymbals too. At that rate, stay away from any B8's and XS20's (Sabian), and PST (Paiste).

If all of those cymbals are bad, what would you recommend? I'm trying to upgrade my kit.

Well it depends on what kind of sound you want. If you want a loud glassy sound, I'd get A Customs, Z Customs, Sabian Vaults (I have 19" and 20" crashes. Thin but still pretty strong), Meinl Soundcasters and Meinl Twenty's, Paiste... well I'm not too sure about which Paiste are like that. You just gotta read about the cymbal and it'll tell you what the sound is.

I really like the Sabian Vaults, but they are subject to cracking. They're made pretty thin but can take a beating. I had my 19" for about nine months and now there's a nice 2-3" crack going inwards. Zildjian K Customs, A Customs, Zildjian K, and Zildjian A are all good. Sabian HH, HHX, and Vault Artisan (way expensive) are good. Paiste Signature, 2002, Rude, and Giant Beat's (If you like Bohnam sounding cymbals). The Meinl's I listed up there are great as well. It's a big list but there's just so much out there. There are a lot of other smaller yet great sounding cymbal companies, such as Trk, Istanbul, Turkish, Bosphorous, UFIP... I hope this helps some!

You can't go wrong with Sabian AA or AAX, or some HHX too... but they're not quite as durable.

I use a powerstroke 3 clear for my kick. With the blanket in it, I can sometimes get a really awesome, full deep thud out of it.
