I've noticed that the Musicians Forum doesn't get much traffic, so I'm gonna revive it with my second try at the MA Songwriting Contest. It was waaay too early to try it the first time I did, so now is as good a time as ever.

Here's how it goes, ladies and gents.
-THE PROCEDURE-
1. You post your official entry into the contest on this thread. Entry deadline is 12:00 AM CST, 1/21.
Entries will include:
-email address(feel free to PM this instead)
-List of equipment and skill on each
-Favorite Genres
-Least Favorite Genres

2. Once all entries are submitted, I will provide each person with a "challenge": Each will be a descriptive paragraph of a sound they are trying to achieve.

3. You have one week to complete a full song with the parameters described.

-THE JUDGING-

1. I will elect a panel of two other people, and myself. To be a judge, all you have to do is post here telling me you are interested in judging, and you must be in good standing on the MA. You can't be a judge and enter the contest too, of course. The first two people who meet these requirements will get the position, basically.

2. Judges will rate each song out of 10, with an average being used to determine the final winner. If there is a tie, the judges will weigh each tied song to determine the final winner.

-WHAT DO I WIN?-

If you win, I will personally provide you with a physical copy of Nyarlathotep's "Funeral Pyre" EP. I will also compose and record a song of YOUR choosing, just for the hell of it.

-AM I ELIGIBLE?-
Anyone who isn't a judge can participate. The more the merrier!

-----------------------------

Here we go. The contest is open. Good luck to all, and I hope this is gonna be fun!

I had to drop out of the last one due to school commitments. As an unemployed, out of school bum, I now have no such commitments.

Count me in. :)

EDIT: Shit, forgot all the other stuff, alrighty...

Email address is on my profile and on that "email" button below my posts (or should be)
Equipment: Guitar and bass. Shit on both.
Favourite genres (I assume metal only?): Black, death, grind
Least favourite genres: -core, groove, retarded bastardised black metal (things such as "Shoegaze Black Metal", urgh).

Email: [email protected]
Gear: 7-String Guitar, Standard Guitar, Acoustic guitar, Line 6 PODxt Pro, can rent/borrow gear for vocals, can program drums very badly, Reaper. I like to think of myself as pretty good at guitar but I don't want to go on an ego trip of course. I'm plenty competent at writing and playing.
Favorite genres: Tech Death & Regular Death, Experimental/Progressive DM.
Least favorite: Core (anything with gratuitous breakdowns really) , nu, tr00 kvlt BM (I like melodic BM and some other BM bands). I'm not a big sludge fan.

I'll have to squeeze this in since I'm moving in a week and I have alot of obligations to attend to, but I'll do my best to participate. Apologies if nothing is submitted, but you've been warned.

Gear: Conklin 7 String Bass (competent), Gibson SG (pretty good), Hamer Double Cutaway, Marshall TSL 100, Garageband, Terrible at drum programming but whatever
Favorite Genres: Trad Doom, Sludge, Hard Rock, D-Beat, Black Metal
Least Favorite: Post Metal, Folk Metal, Deathcore, NSBM, Melodic X, Technical X, -Core, Groove, Funeral Doom, Stoner Metal, Thrash Metal, Progressive X, DSBM, BDM, Slam, Drone, Avant-Garde...hopefully I left nothing out.

Why is an email address necessary? PMs should suffice.

I think it'd be better if we just put them on Mediafire (Mediafire because it's non-sucky). That way, when the contest is over, you can just post the links to the songs for their "public release".

i have plenty of time this contest round.. I can enter. Recommend we get a few weeks to do a recording.

Have a guitar, pro tools and a drum machine. No bass. Prefer slow stuff in general.

-email address
[email protected]

-List of equipment and skill on each
Guitar, keyboard, recorder, Harmonica, drumming software.

I'm probably around average at guitar, keyboard and at the recorder. Completely shit at the harmonica, and kinda bad at the drum program.

-Favorite Genres
Black, viking (I prefer the music atmospheric and melodic, but not to cheezy, Windir and Taake are good examples)
-Least Favorite Genres
Grind

All entered!
I may revise the time limit to two weeks.

I still have had nobody come out wanting to be a judge. The positions are still open.

Equipment: Guitar and Bass (competent, not much good at leads or anything especially technical though), Drums (rudimentary ability, no double kick). Could just program drums if necessary.

Favourite Genres: black, death, grind

Least Favourite Genres: symphonic, industrial

I'll just upload the song instead of email if that's alright.

And what's the deal with vocals? Because if you're going to ask me to do clean ones you can count me out right now...

Correct. It's a term used to describe those sorts of filthy black/death bands. Perhaps not a term that is particularly required, but at least it's better than calling it "bestial black metal". I mean what the fuck? War metal sounds COOL and AWESOME, bestial black metal is just retarded.

Exactly. Sorry if I was being overly specific, but my three favourite bands are Mitochondrion, Rites of Thy Degringolade, and Axis of Advance, all from the B.C. "war metal" scene, and all more sophisticated than their other kin like Blasphemy or Conqueror.

Damn, I'd love to be in this one, but I'm a bit too busy the coming weeks.

Hopefully the winner of this one will actually get their prize, though *cough*.

Here's my entry. I'll give it a whack. It should be interesting to see what happens with my extremely limited gear haha.

Email address is [email protected]

I have a Dean metalman bass with a smaller Crate amp. I don't have a guitar. I have drum software, but i'm not amazing at it. I have a pretty shitty mic but can do vocals.

My favorite genres are doom, thrash metal, black metal, and old school death metal.

My least favorite genres are deathcore, cheesy power metal, drone, porngrind style bands.

I don't understand what type of "challenge" you are going to give us. So we describe what type of music we like and then you challenge us to write a song within those parameters?

It's based off of the first contest that I think Noktorn did. If Fetalfeast is doing it the same way, you list out what you like and what you dislike to play. You'll be assigned something that you don't usually play or is out of your norm for playing. Whoever can write the best song that follows the guideline of what you're assigned wins.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, judges.

Alright, I got the last three entries in. To Overkill, you are correct. I'm running it the way Noktorn did.

ATTENTION: THE CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW ENTRIES!

I will be posting your challenges tomorrow at around 2 pm CST. Good luck to all!

P.S. "WebOfPiss" requested that he receive his challenge early, due to complications he outlined in his original post. Thus, his will be due a couple days earlier than yours.

Awesome. Can't wait to see the challenges. I listened the outcome of Noktorns challenge and it was really interesting to see how people interpreted their objective into music.
