Found it at a record shop. It was a special import.

It's quite good... similar to the last album but with more of an epic feel to it. The cover is a good indication of that.

Ratt - Out from the Cellar
Metal Church - Blessing In Disguise
Immolation - Majesty and Decay

Picked these up the other day.
Out from the Cellar is just fun catchy glam rock. Nothing more and nothing less. $5 from Newbury Comics was just so cheap I couldn't pass it up.

Blessing in Disguise I don't enjoy as much as their debut but Fake Healer and Badlands are 2 fantastic tracks and I find myself just playing these 2 over and over in my car.

Majesty and Decay is one of my only death metal purchases and I decide I needed some of it and Newbury comics was selling it so I might as well. Decent CD. I definitely prefer the second half of it though as it has more doom influence. I need to get some Incantation next.

I like how I spent less that day than my friend who bought 2 indie rock albums.

Is it any good?

My initial response was:

I wrote:
As of now, after an extraordinarily cursory listen (like 30 seconds of each song), no. I don't know. I'll have to listen to it more in depth. I wasn't blown away at first, though.

After giving this a spin with full attention it's actually a damn good record. Very dark and disturbing, with Malefic's usual keyboard layering, I thought I heard some live horns and strings in there somewhere (could be synths), the female vocals are not your ordinary cheesy black/gothic female vocals, lots of piano, distorted guitars barely making a presence, vocals way upfront (including some really brutal deep gurgling vocals on one song), just a nasty sounding, dark, creepy record. Not typical black metal Xasthur, and easily miles ahead of All Reflections Drained. I still loathe Malefic as a (acoustic) drummer, but it suits the music well.

Different countries have different things in the iTunes stores. I was upset because the Amazon UK/US MP3 stores have the Running Wild stuff and the Canadian iTunes had nothing, but they recently added it to the Canadian store. I would check back every couple of weeks, but it may not be there due to your location.

Thanks. That probably explains it. I will have to wait. I never found Running Wild to be too hard to find available.

I got some CDs today from Record & Tape Traders:

Image

Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward
Anthrax - Spreading the Disease, seemed like a total steal for only $3.
Isis - Mosquito Control, another cheap steal for $3.
Isis - Oceanic
Primordial - To the Nameless Dead, and another for $5.

This was a fruitful visit today and I could have gotten another 5 if I really wanted to (or had the money).

ANTHRAX - AMONG THE LIVING.
Remastered, 2009 deluxe edition, CD/DVD. Had it on cassette so loong ago. I remember this album being soooo badd assss at the time. It's been GOD 20 years since I heard the whole thing from start to finish. I bought it for the nostalgia. It sounded better in 1987 on a crappy cassette deck, to be honest.

DEFLESHED - UNDER THE BLADE.
Metal Blade, 1997. Saved it from the used bin of a Dallas music store. Nice album, thrashy, heavy, a little bit generic but still refreshing. Playing on heavy rotation in the last few weeks.

DARK FORTRESS - YELM.
This is a new band for me. Don't know anything about them. To say "epic black" metal would be too cliche. Found myself listening to it as black ground noise, attention drifting in & out of the songs. The sound they are going for is a big, big, bigness, a synthesized adventure of metal overtures. I heard Satan Bled and couldn't help but think of a boiling mixture of Gorgoroth & Nattefrost & Engram for some reason.

LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR - EVIL POWER.
Slayer worship I can trust will be a head bangers best nightmare. I like the visual art this band is producing. It's been toned down a little bit since the earlier records but they ain't afraid of putting some really dirty guitars in the mix. Verges toward the heavy side of alt-metal, post-grunge, $2 dollar PBR and internet rage. War metal still has some legs.

LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR - WAR METAL BATTLE MASTER Uncensored. DVD.
Banned in 31 countries. Warning - contains graphic violence & nudity. LMFAO. Get this. This is metal. Some of the live stuff looks like it was recorded by fans and sounds awful, but the intention here is to expand the vision of what LAIR has to become in order survive in a warmetalbattlemaster world.

BURNING WITCH - CRIPPLED LUCIFER / RIFT.CANYON.DREAMS. Southern Lord Deluxe 2CD. Killer doom stuff from 1998. A must have for doom enthusiasts. On equal basis with Cathedral's FOREST OF EQULIBRIUM and Paradise Lost's GOTHIC in my opinion. Packaging is supernice. Can't believe I bought this as a random buy... I imagined it might sound like some kind of black metal based on the cd cover. It is... like black metal played slow! Country Doctor holy shit it sounds like somebody is going through hell here.

dISEMBOWELMENT - TRANCENDENCE INTO THE PERIPHERAL / DUSK Relapse 2CD reissue.
Saved it from the used bin of a Dallas music store. Never heard the music before but I had heard of the band. Now it's part of my cd collection and it ain't going back to languish in any used record stores, that's for sure.
I like my grinder sandwhich to be heavy, darkened/burnt with a good overdosage of doomsauce on top. This is it.

AUTOPSY TORMENT - 7TH RITUALS FOR THE DARKEST SOUL OF HELL. Pulverized Records 2008. Random buy. Awesome cover art. I'm listening to this and I'm smiling because it sounds so ridiculous and serious at the same time. Not joking about it... but... this is the kind of record that super hot college school vampire chicks would like to listen to as they are sucking all the blood out of my cock. Remember that movie "I Spit on your Grave"? There is the bathtub scene where the girl starts giving the guy an under water hand job and she's cutting his dick off at the same time and the guy is like "oh yeah baby that feels good" and all that blood starts filling the tub. This record sounds just like that. Lo-fi underground sound,, cliche song titles, worn out riffs, I should hate it to pieces.

DARKTHRONE - CIRCLE THE WAGONS.
Fenriz is not too happy about "cut & paste" metal. He's basically going to hate it forever. And be writing songs about it forever. And resurrecting all the good bands from our long lost metal past. He hates copy cats & cut & paste metal yet writes songs enamored in a wishful dream of his very own metal utopia, cutting & pasting what he likes from the pages of metal history. Fenriz and Nocturno, have chopped down another tree from the forest and fashioned it into finest Norwegian furniture. A throne. Of darkness. Booklet and the artwork are all of highest quality as we have come to expect. Songs? This is 40 minutes of 9 songs. . No throw away tracks. Taking chances with the vocals, Darkthrone gnaws at a bone pile, cannabalizing, regurgitating, escaping genre boundaries we didn't even knew existed.

HIGH ON FIRE - SNAKES FOR THE DIVINE
It's got that cool mythological fantasy art style like the cover of a Conan graphic novel . . I listen to HoF for the guitar arrangements, riffs, as back ground music for driving games. This music is great for a hard night of drinking & driving. Vocals weave into guitar traffic as they drive you through a never ending highway of midnight road trips. Guitars are put through the distortion field of a Denny's breakfast and after several cups of black coffee you feel ready to get back on the road. All parts being equal, the drums keep time moving in fast forward, set in time with the telephone poles that are planted along side of the highway. The overall impression is of rolling down the windows to enjoy the burst of turbulence of air across your face, speedo pegged out,, pedal to the metal.. destination fast approaching. Fast times at Matt Pike High. The sweet aroma of this album leaves a mixture of burning rubber, weed, and the scent of a Las Vegas stripper. The stripper you left buried out in the desert by the sign that says no turning back.

I ordered the following albums last night, from Relapse Records:

-Deicide 'Deicide' CD
I think it's about time that I own one of their classic [studio] albums, so why not start with their phenomenal debut. The only album I own from them is 'When Satan Lives', which is still a great live album (one hour of intense death metal showcasing Deicide at their prime).

-Nominon 'Diabolical Bloodshed' CD
GODDAMN! This band rules! I bought their 'Recremation' CD this past Saturday after recognizing the band name and giving it a chance. I've been listening to that album all day today. I'm so glad that I found this band, so I decided to buy another album of their's.

-Entombed 'Clandestine' CD/DVD Reissue
All I have from Entombed so far is the mighty 'Left Hand Path', so I though I might as well get their second Swedish death metal masterpiece. $12 for a classic album with a bonus DVD is a great deal.

I picked up Holy Grail's Improper Burial at their show with Amon Amarth last night. I was disappointed in the show, but that had more to do with the terrible sound at the venue than with the bands. The EP is great, though; definitely better than Over the Top.
