I've been listening to a lot of Ahab lately. I was wondering if anyone had other ocean themed bands to reccomend that have a similar reverence and sadness to their music about sea themes. Doesn't have to be doom, melo death or whatever is cool. Thanks for your help guys.

I would look into Giant Squid. It does a good job of putting you out to sea, but I'm not sure it's melancholic enough... but give it a go as it's really good ocean-themed progressive metal.

I've heard of them. Always liked their name. I'll check them out

Not ocean related exactly, but if you consider that the world they write about is an uncharted island in the middle of the ocean, then I'd recommend Catacombs. And I do this because it was after buying their albums that I got into Ahab. As Ahab provides for a feeling of floating above the waters (roaring or calming as they are), Catacombs just makes you feel like you're in an underwater cave filled with beasts.

Hey it's based on H.P. Lovecraft's work! ;)

Give Novembre a listen, especially the first two albums.

Not only one of the best bands, ever, but lots of seaside imagery/references/themes. Very downbeat.

Mastodon's album Leviathan would be considered ocean related, at least in the lyrics. The music isn't very melancholic however.

Yeahhhh I actually have Catacombs AND Novembre... The only album mentioned in this thread I haven't checked out is Leviathan... I have a slight aversion to Mastodon that I need to get over. Unfortunately I work at Hot Topic and it ruins the credibility of any popular band that has ever existed. But I'll give it a shot anyway.

It's just one song, but Beneath These Waves by Demons & Wizards is about Moby Dick, and I find it captures the oceanic feel pretty well.

there seems to be a lot of ocean lovers on this forum..... check out Gojira's From Mars to Sirius. Flying Whales is a great track to start with but really the whole album is unbelievably good

I guess it'd be as much lake as ocean, but the Epos album by Darkestrah is very much what you seek.

I think the aforementioned Giant Squid's Metridium Fields fits this thread perfectly.

I know I talk about this band way too much, but pick up Oceanic by ISIS. This album has recurring themes of water and drowning. The cover alone should sell you on it.

not to be obvious but Ocean. Check their album Here Where Nothing Grows.

And not to be a promo whore but almost every Auspicium song is about the ocean or uses it as a metaphor

The newest Alcest album (Écailles de lune) has a definite nautical vibe to it. I remember reading a message from Niege before the album came out and I'm sure he mentioned the ocean as the main theme of the album.

Talk about "really fuckin' specific".

I don't know how ocean-related it is, but you could always go throw a listen over to Ocean Machine: Biomech, by Devin Townsend. Worthwhile, I'd say.

Surprised not to see In Mourning mentioned yet - The Weight of Oceans is the first album that came to mind when I saw the thread title

Don’t be surprised. That album didn’t exist when this thread was made seven years ago.

Fungoid Stream is great ocean-themed funeral doom

This particular track is just an interlude, but more prominently features whales

Thonis is ocean-themed death metal (ancient Mediterranean to be exact), although it depends where you draw the line for melancholic.

Soilwork's The Living Infinite is a strongly ocean-connected album. Also Omnium Gatherum's Beyond is quite profoundly sea-inspired.

Although it's just my perception but I'd also recommend Throes of Dawn's recent release, Our Voices Shall Remain. Evokes a vivid oceanic imagery every time.
