I'm looking for a general introduction to crust - I know Amebix and a few from the Serbian scene, but not much. I also want to know how to differentiate between a lot of crust and general d-beat music, as it sounds quite similar to me.

Crust: Antisect, Effigy, Axegrinder, Nausea, Extreme Noise Terror, War//Plague, Stormcrow, Disrupt, Doom, Dirty Power Game, Gloom, Misery, Destroy!, Submachine.

D-Beat: Disclose, Decontrol, Varukers, Disgust, Mob 47, Anti-Cimex, Discard, Warcollapse.

That should get you started, I've been listening to this stuff for years, so if you need any more suggestions, PM me, I'll hook ya up.

Any sugestions for "screamo" hardcore? The original definition, not the one that became known because of the shitty bands from nowadays. I listened to Envy and thought it was pretty cool.

Crust and modern D-beat/Discore are essentially the same to me.

They can exist apart from one another, but the themes and aesthetics of each tend to go hand-in-hand., as does the music in most cases.

D-beat bands just use D-beats frequently... I think it's reasonable to look at it as a sub-genre of Crust for that reason, considering that's one of the few distinctions. A lot of D-beat bands sound different from each other when you ignore the drumming. Same could be said of Crust bands.

They all have unifying similarities, but they don't all sound the same... Anyway, some band with "Dis" in the front of their name, or a band mimmicking the Discharge logo (or, more often, doing Dis-names and copying the logo) is almost certainly going to be D-beat.

Some skramz I've been listening to recently: Maths - Ascent EP, Loma Prieta - Life/Less, Daitro - Y, Ampere - Like Shadows, and Carrion Spring - A Short History of Decay

I love crust punk, but the one-dimensional lyrical themes gets a little old after awhile. For that reason, does anyone know of any genuine crust/grind/d-beat with unconventional aesthetic or lyrical themes for the genre?

for grind check out

Wadge - Grindcore Lu'au (The album title says it all)
Super Fun Happy Slide - The Undislodgable Nugget Scenario (Maybe not all that unconventional for grind but definitely not the typical political crap)
50/50 - anything (All about skateboarding and gore... again maybe not all THAT unconventional but certainly not typical for the style they play)
Blood Freak - Live Fast, Die Young, and Leave a Flesh Eating Corpse (All about 70's/80's horror flicks)

J.R. Hayes of Pig Destroyer writes some of the best lyrics in metal. Check them out.

Skaven write lyrics that aren't you usual left wing crust punk stuff. Flowers of Flesh and Blood is the release I've heard and it is some really solid metallic crust that sports a nice gritty sound. The vocalist also has a really throaty scream that appeals to me.

Maybe I'm just losing it, but this band is labeled death/thrash on the archives, however they sound like they have some sort of punk mixed in there. If so what kind is it and where do I find more?

Check out Al-Thawra. With the whole Islamic viewpoint, they get lumped in with the rest of the whole 'Taqwacore' scene, but their music is pure crust fury.

Check out Vomitus. They had a demo called Sutimov and an unreleased full length called A Galaxy of Thought. It isn't strictly crust, as they mix crust and death metal with a mild technical edge, but their lyrics are mostly on spiritual topics and other out there shit.

Looking for hardcore/crust similar to Mohoram Atta. Especially the vocals. Check the link below, but it's basically darker hardcore with similarities to his hero is gone, Envy(jpn), 2nd wave black metal influences as well.

Yeah, they're a great band and fairly unconventional when it comes to Crust. But their lyrics aren't even liberal they're so far left.

Ok so I wanna cover my bases on this to make sure I'm not making an ass out of myself,
The groups Stormcrow, Sanctum and Instinct of Survival are all Metal tinged crust (or possibly just crusty death metal) Correct?
is Guided Cradle unrelated to crust as their MA page makes out? or is that a slight oversite? Because when browsing for patches they came up as crust several times.
next I'd like to know is Amebix's first two and Hellbastard's Heading for Internal Darkness a decent look at how typical crust sounds like or would that be like trying to get a feel for Norwegian black metal from Venom's Welcome to Hell?

I know this is some hair splitting but as someone who makes a big deal to my friends about the vast differences between brutal death and deathcore I feel shouldn't go around talking about crust when the closest I get is well... Bolt Thrower probably.

Yeah, there are plenty of bands like Sanctum and what not who are heavily influenced by stuff like Celtic Frost, Bolt Thrower, Autopsy and the like; I reccomend you look into Hellshock. Amebix is pushing it, but Hellbastard were basically a bunch of Punk kids playing Thrash Metal. I should go onto say that there is a very fine line between Crust and Metal.

Amebix would kinda be the Venom in this case. Arise! is definitely tied in with crust, but there's a tad too much trad metal influence to really fit the genre as a whole. Hellbastard is pretty standard songwriting wise, but obviously the production kinda dates it a bit - most crust has a touch more crunch to it, both in guitar tone and vocal style. Doom gives another early look at crust, which is decidedly similar to Hellbastard.

Course, crust is very close to several punk genres and influenced/was influenced by several outside the scene - good luck finding an exact line.

Crust is one of those genres that just gets lumped.mpeople call hhis gone crust, but I'd call them hardcore. A band like Doom, Disrupt, or Nausea is how I see crust.

The love for Hellhammer/Celtic Frost is mutual between metal heads and punks, same with Motörhead. So nearly any time a punk band brings up those two they're probably a crust band.

Good intros and easy indicators of crust would be Skitsystem, Doom, Disrupt, Nausea, early Extreme Noise Terror, or Anti Cimex. There you have some Swedish, some British, and some American; older and more recent.

For another good band that plays this style (especially on the Bolt Thrower end of the spectrum), look into Cancer Spreading. Their latest album was pretty good, and I especially like the vox. And to top it off, they do a solid cover of "Cenotaph".

I highly recommend that you would check out a couple of bands here from Sweden;

Skitsystem (Shit System, translated) I'd recommend you start with these guys.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfQuswBSgB0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yb4um44P3ys

Disfear
Totalt Jävla Mörker (Total Fucking Darkness, translated)

All of the three are really good. Fast, angry and brutal!
Especially Skitsystem is worth checking in. One of the best acts spawned in this tragical little country called Sweden...Well, well, we at least have these bands and a handfull of awesome black metal bands to be proud of.

Lots of good bands already mentioned, but I'd also like to second Jerry's Kids in particular.
Seriously, dudes practically invented "Emo" with this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La-IeSD-XSU

And, on that note, despite bands of the period supposedly hating that "Emo" designation, Rites of Spring were a fucking amazing Emo band. A lot less aggressive and more melodic compared to earlier US Hardcore bands, but still amazing, and recommendable to anyone who's a fan of old DC HC music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge8ucvLYLRc

I can't think of anything else really worth recommending off the top of my head.

I want to recomment Blast from Belgium, who was playing hardcore punk already in 1973!!!
Aside from the "lame" vocals, this is not even proto-hardcore as much as ACTUAL hardcore punk, unlike some other earlier acts that just had some vibes of it... The riffs, distortion, drumming (even the cover art is punk as fuck) wouldn't be out of place in any early song Discharge/Bad Brains/whatever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48tmaTbhudQ
They even had blastbeats during the guitar solo. That if something is way ahead of their time!

When I discovered this, it was like digging up a living pre-historic creature! It still sounds quite fresh and lively unlike other dating proto stuff.

If anything, it seems more like an early form of Thrash/Heavy Metal with some remnants of 60's Psychedelia left behind in the mix.

And anyway, there were already "Proto-Punk" bands in the very late 60's/early 70's that were more stripped down and less grandiose and far more attitudinal compared to this, even if they were not necessarily as speedy.

Truthfully, this just sounds like a shambling band who's not tight enough to sound they way they'd hoped, making their music come across as sloppy, raw and non-technical. I imagine their obscurity relates more to this fact than the idea that they didn't care about being a talented band who'd be recognized by somebody.

It's not bad, but I truly do not see this as revelatory, or even much like earlier Proto-Punk of the late 60's (or Punk Rock in general).
Like I said earlier, it's more interesting as something that seems like extremely early Thrash Metal, but "sloppy/raw" ≠ "Punk". Still interesting, but my Punk-O-Meter just simply isn't responding to this.

Aren't you aware of bands like Discharge? That Blast song is pretty much what Discharge started in 1980 with the exception of vocals and the mid-section blast beats

I completely forgot about GATT (from Indonesia). Whoever was looking for crusty metal check out their splits with Infernal Stronghold and Black Hole of Calcutta- and check those two bands out as well; all 3 are metal bands with crusty elements.

But GATT's fucking dirty, heavy, and vicious.

D-Clone are cool. Otherwise my favorites are probably Unkind, Frigöra and The Sick!
