You might be right.
Dragon Ball, Z and GT are awesome. i never get tired of 'em. Specially with the spanish dubbing. It's just so fucking intense.

The earlier sagas of DBZ will always have a special place in my nerdy heart. The Cell Saga was Ok, but everything after that was pretty bad. You could tell he wanted to end it at Namek but Jump jut kept throwing money at him.

Spoiler: show
I never liked Dragonball Z. At all.

Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka?
Jesus fuck, what a let-down. The first half really exceeded my expectations a LOT. I mean, I dropped it first episode when it was airing. But I enjoyed the fighting, the plot looked like it was going somewhere.. a cool murder mystery y'know? But then it turned into a bad soap opera. Blegh. And the last episode was filler-tier when it could've really been spent fleshing out the really dull plot a lot more, making it interesting.

Anyway, enough of me being bitchy. What's everyone watching this season?
So far I'm really only keeping up with Steins;Gate. Shit is SCIENCE as fuck. Going to start Ao No Exorcist tonight to see what all the fuss is about. I'm expecting a generic shounen series.

Been downloading some shows from this season such as C and AnoHana, however I haven't had enough time to really sit down and watch them.

I'm kinda keen on downloading Steins;Gate too because of all the praise it's getting, plus one or two friends have suggested it to me.

Same here. Lately I've only been watching Nichijou (yeah, I know, but it's extremely silly, and I laugh at silly stuff), and Denpa Onna (weird comedy show by Shaft? Of course I'm watching!), and I've been downloading AnoHana but haven't seen any of it yet. Then there's Kaiji, but I'm watching Triad's releases, so it's kinda stalled at episode 4 now. Same for Maria+Holic (watching only because it's Shaft and the first season wasn't horrible, could drop it if Commie do).

Oh, and I'm watching Fireball Charming too, doesn't take too much time and it's silly, so I gave it a shot. Result: I'm grateful for translation notes, otherwise I'd not notice half of the puns.

Also, for those of you watching it, how's C? The Engrish in the title makes me want to stay away from it, but I see it getting praise, so I'm curious.

As for next season, not counting movies and OVAs, I'll watch Appleseed and Natsume. And I may give an opportunity to Usagi Drop, seeing how Production IG will be involved, and to NO.6 because it sounds like it'll be another Xam'd. Other than that nothing seems interesting to me. The lack of Shaft shows is disappointing.

I'm a hardcore fan of Chōdenji Robo Combattler V. Awesome series, I even have some season 1 recorded tapes from the 70s, but unfortunately I've never managed to find all the episodes for both seasons. I really want to watch the rest of it. :(

I just finished watching Angel Beats! Kind of cool actually and the end is sad as fuck.
Some unexpected shit happens towards the end and... Well... I liked it.
Spoiler: show
The whole thing is about a boy that dies, and then appears in this world where young people with bad lives go to fulfill their dreams. There he founds a group or rebels against god that try to live there but not understanding what they are actually doing.

I quite enjoyed that too.

I just finished watching Toaru Majutsu no Index(both seasons) and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, which I really enjoyed. Accelerator has to be one of the greatest anime characters ever.

Just finished Code Geass R2. Yeah I know, I'm slow.

Season 1 was Lordly-Tier, I enjoyed it a LOT.
R2 was different, but definitely had its 5 star moments. The whole thing was a tame compared to the original I thought, and the characters really weren't as engaging. The middle dragged on a bit too.

Overall it really exceeded my expectations by quite a huge margin. Plan on investing in the box set soon. (and perhaps a neat Lancelot Albion or Guren S.E.I.T.E.N figure if I find one cheap enough :D)

Onto other things, this might interest some people. A Japanese online poll listing the 50 overall favourite anime episodes of all time. I found it while perusing /m/ a few minutes ago.

http://anime.biglobe.ne.jp/userranking/title/11762/

Spoiler: show
The Top Ten -

1. Mahou Shoujo Madoka – #10
2. Clannad After Story – #18
3. Code Geass R2 – #25
4. K-ON!! – #20
5. Angel Beats! #9
6. Jewel Pet Tinkle #52
7. Toradora! #16
8. Code Geass #1
9. School Days #12
10. Neon Genesis Evangelion #9

Yeah, Ao no Exorcist does seem like a generic Shounen Season.
Atm i'm Watching Denpa Onna, Hanasaku, Lotte no Omocha and Dog days (for some reason). Oh yeah and Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi (which became REALLY REALLY Generic and disappointing starting ep 10 so hopefully the last ep will give a good ending or an ending for a second season (I haven't seen it yet).

and to be frank. I loved the whole of Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? lol. All a matter of opinion

I never really understood all the massive love for Dragonball Z. I mean, the original Dragonball was pretty good, and actually made sense, but then Dragonball Z came along and suddenly everything was, "By the way, they're aliens!!!!!!! Also everybody dies and then comes back to life and then they fight Hitler who has come back from hell for no reason!!!!!"

YES! I love Voltes V too! Now there are more chances to find them on the net, given the success of the Robot Taisen franchise.

I'm very fond of 70/80 mecha stuff like Getter Robo, Daimos, Raideen, Kotetsu Jeeg (my fav), Dunbine, Gakeen, Gaiking, Japanese transformers in Headmasters/Masterforce/Victory, etx

The new Kotetsu Jeeg was very enjoyable btw.

I haven't seen any episodes from the Voltes V and Tōshō Daimos series, but if they're better than Combattler V in terms of characters and subplots, then I'm game to track some down.

By the way, I've found some megaupload links for all the Combattler V episodes. I'm waiting to reach the one with the Baby Kiiru / Adult Kiiru monster, that one had me depressed and in tears back in the day.

Whoa, thanx a lot!!

Voltes V is better than Combattler V in my appreciation, so you should check it. Daimos is simply one of the best.

Using the same division as super and real robo from Robot Taisen, Gundam first series - up to F91 - are among the best of the 'real' robot category. G is good but fairly different from the rest, as well X is decent. Victory' fail is the main character, overall an enjoyable series too. I fucking hate Wing and the new series are reduntant IMO.

I'm watching K-On! It is actually a lot more fun than I expected. I find myself laughing with everything those girls do.
Also, I was checking and that series is supposed to be under the seinen category, anyone knows why?

I don't get the appeal of this show. I watched the first episode and it was so boring. Nothing happened, the story isn't interesting, the dialog is pointless, it's not funny.
I guess it's seinen because it's popular among Japanese hikikomori pedophiles who like to watch young girls do sexually suggestive things.

I feel the same. It's a growing and unfortunate trend in anime, where the shows are clearly marketed towards... a certain audience. Truth be told, I haven't enjoyed an anime that's been made in the last ten years, apart from a handful of exceptions. It doesn't help that I hate the current artstyle fad in anime.

It's all about moe. Modern anime are about being kawaii and the fanservice. There are plenty of good animes coming out. They don't get the attention because everybody just about loves the fan service, and cliche shows. I like Toriko because reminds me of shows that came out in the 80s where you had more ultra muscular heroes that kicked ass, and were prime examples of manliness. It's not like now where shows are overrun with wimpy bishounen. Beelzebub kind of has a 90s feel IMO.

Finally got around to watching all of C, and enjoyed it too. The ending was slightly rushed, it really needed more than 11 episodes to properly explain half the shit that was going on, however I was still pretty impressed with it.

If I had to rate it I would give it a 7.5/10.

Well, well, well... Summer season is here, nobody's subbing Appleseed XIII (nor the related movies that came out last month) and the group I'd like to see subbing Natsume still hasn't finished the two thousand series they're already subbing, so I don't expect them to do it anytime soon. Looks like I'll have time to watch shows from past seasons that for whatever reason I didn't watch when they were airing. Therefore, I propose a little poll:

From the following options, what do you think I should watch first? Should I avoid something completely?

  • Akagi
  • AnoHana
  • Aoi Bungaku
  • Ef (both seasons)
  • Excel Saga
  • Freedom
  • Last Exile
  • Memories
  • Monlight Mile (both seasons)
  • Pani Poni Dash
  • Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

As of now, I intend to start with Akagi, to get my dose of Fukumoto while I wait for Triad's version of the second season of Kaiji (and while we're at it, for someone to pick up the translation of the Gambling Emperor Legend Zero manga; at this rate it would probably be better if I just learn japanese so I don't have to worry about subs and scanlations), but if any of the other options are truly spectacular I may switch, or alternate.

Just go for Excel Saga and Memories, most everything else is/looks pretty skipable, Moonlight Mile and Freedom may be good.

Also, if you're looking for horror, you're better off trying the Uzumaki manga then Aoi Bungaku... :)

I would go with Ef. It's a nice story, very sad and hopeful at the same time, very well written. Every character is well done and developed. You may be a noob or very experimented in anime and enjoy it anyway. The visuals are good too.

Akagi is the best I've seen about gambling, but if you don't know how to play mahjong it won't be that enjoyable. I recommend in this matter to check One Outs - baseball based gambling. It has a similar approach in the psychological side, besides the main chara has the exact voice of Akagi and some of his personality. It looks like Hisoka from HxH tho.

edit: HOLY SHIT:KAIJI SECOND SEASON???

Yup, but the only good group subbing it (that is, Triad) is stalled at episode 4. The guys from Nutbladder have followed through, but based on past experience I kinda expect their subs to be a minefield of errors. Guess I'll still give them an opportunity if Triad doesn't get out of the coma.

Quote:

I'm not looking for horror "per se" (at least in Bungaku; I'm reading Uzumaki already ;)). To be honest, the only thing about Bungaku I know is that it's a bunch of adaptations of famous japanese novels, with character designs by several famous mangaka. I only have it sitting on my hard drive because two groups I usually like did a joint effort to sub it, and because of the people involved in character design. I'm not expecting much out of it, and will probably watch it in last place.

Oh, and about Freedom... I just learned that it's kind of a seven episodes long glorified commercial for a company that sells cup noodles. Therefore, I demoted it to the "watch only if you have nothing else to watch and nothing better to do" category. Feels bad to have to do this to a show in which Katsuhiro Otomo is involved, though. Hopefully, Memories will be as good as his usual stuff, specially considering Satoshi Kon is partially responsible for the script and Yoko Kanno is responsible for the music of at least one of the segments.

I'd have to say I enjoyed AnoHana the most out of the ones I've watched from that list(only watched 3 listed), but then again many people don't agree with my opinions, so don't blame me if you find it underwhelming. :P

Don't worry, I never blame others for stuff that ultimately boils down to tastes. Well, unless it's really shitty, then you'll suffer my neverending wrath :P

That said, I ended up starting Akagi. So far, it's exactly what I expected, except for the apparent lack of "zawa zawa" (but at least it has translation notes, so the fact that I know squat about mahjong doesn't make it any less enjoyable). I've interrupted it temporarily, though, 'cause Natsume finally got subs and I'm gonna watch it now, so I'll resume Akagi tomorrow. Still no luck regarding Appleseed XIII.

I've been getting back into anime: I haven't focused on it since I was 15 and that's only because it wasn't available on TV for a while (I gave the sci-fi channel a try, but couldn't find something I liked). It's changed because of Netflix and since I got it I've watched Desert Punk, Witchblade, and Sekirei. I love all three so far and I'm watchin Xenosaga, but I'm not too impressed at this point (it seems very action oriented, to the point where it's the only thing the show focuses on in my mind). I might rewatch Ruroni Kenchin/ Samurai X since I've only seen a few episodes (been a while, too- I was 12 when it came on).

I'm hoping to get G Gundam in a complete box set (it's my favorite Gundam anime and one of my favs in general) since I can't find it anywhere except in crappy quality youtube vids that usually show 10 minute intervals and have constant commercials. Any reccomendations? A few others to expand interest:

Ghost In The Shell (probably my fav. anime movie)
DBZ, Dragonball
Elfen Lief
Pretty much everything on the early 2000s Adult Swim line-up

I watched both, thought Samurai Champloo was well developed and had a good duality based idea on the two main characters. Cowboy bebop is basically the Dirty Harry of anime, so yeah I like both.

I've never given Gundam a proper chance. I plan to start with 0079 and go from there. I'm in a real mecha mood as of late, so I should definitely enjoy it.

Anyone here is fan of Digimon season one? They are my all time fav series. Really great show. The second season wasent bad, but from season three and up it started to suck and the storyline took another direction that i personally didnt appreciate.

So I just finished watching Akagi... And now I want to slap the guys responsible for it. I mean, really, what's with that end?
Spoiler: show
I wanted to see Akagi beating Washizu, yes, but more than anything I wanted to see HOW he beats him. Seeing a man that COULD be Akagi alive 30 years after the match against Washizu is not enough.
But well, other than the disappointing end, it was pretty awesome.

I'm re-watching Akagi right now, since I recently learned how to properly play mahjong(through playing the Mahjong mini-game on Yakuza 4, an excellent game).
The manga of Akagi is still on-going, so what happens at the end of the anime isn't the conclusion of the story. I hope they make a second season.
