They're a KILLER live band but I really wish they would've used less obnoxious triggering on the EP (if not natural sounds.) Really kills the mood

My 5 in no particular order would be
Mgla
Ignivomous
Siafu
????
?????

As usual I'm doing a bang-up job of following new releases

So far I've only heard one record I really like and that's Pale Divine's Painted Windows Black. They have a unique sound in doom metal and this one might be the best one they've done yet. Time will tell.

High on Fire - De Vermiis Mysteriis
Only listened to it once so far, but I can already say it will one of my top 5 2012 albums. The riffs are still there, and this time with heavier guitar sound thanks to Kurt Ballou. Cant wait to get a physical copy.

Napalm Death - Utilitarian
They did it again, is it even possible to make a bad Napalm Death album? I like the noisy elements on this album, also the sax on 'Everyday Pox' was cool.

Meshuggah - Koloss
I just started listening to these guys recently and this one is already my most played album of theirs along Catch 33. Not much to say, a really great album overall.

I only just discovered these guys a few weeks back, but yeah, this album is awesome (As is the debut). At this stage I've still got it second behind Ignivomous as my favourite album so far, but I've only heard Cosmogenesis once while it was streaming, so I'm kind of looking back that one with pretty rose coloured glasses.

By the way, the new album makes me want to learn Danish so much as to understand all the creepy samples in the songs. It sounds like a damn horror show and it's a great use of samples, it creates a very dark and choking atmosphere throughout the entire album. I'm really loving this! :)

I like that while they clearly have the whole atmosphere thing covered, they're also extremely riffy which seems to be lacking in many dirty death metal these days.

I'm not really being biased here because I've honestly listened to this album nothing short of 50 times since I received the masters about a month or so ago. Anyway, Anhedonist's debut album is absolutely mesmerizing and quite addictive. Four songs, forty minutes. It's out soon and I think a lot of you will agree. I previewed a song here:

http://youtu.be/pvVFnj2MB3I

It's just massive. The mix/master is perfect and the songs match. Tremendous album that I'm really excited to release and listen to over and over again.

My favorite track is the 15 min one...epic.

Knock Knock.

-Who's there?

Lunar Aurora.

-Lunar Aurora who?

Lunar Aurora Hoagascht is the motherfucking best album of the year already. Holy fuck just got my LP copy and it has blown me away. It's really a toss up between this and Mgla, I really don't see anything else coming close this year.

Exactly! Not that many of the OSDM revival bands manage to nail that balance between creating a menacing, grim soundscape and maintaining genuine momentum. There's something very satisfying about their sound - it's like they manage to go the distance that you wish other similar bands would. And they are phenomenally, epically heavy - in the old-fashioned, headbanging, rib-shattering sense of the word. The other day, I was listening to their first album whilst stuck in traffic under a railway bridge; I was wearing headphones and thought the deep rumbling sound I was hearing was the train crossing overhead. However, when the train had gone, the rumbling was still there. It wasn't the train, it was 'Dodshymne'.

Indeed. Both bands are virtually the same, but they're both awesome old-school black/thrash.

My top 5 in no particular order:

Overkill - The Electric Age
Asphyx - Deathhammer
Psycroptic - The Inherited Repression
Spawn of Possession - Incurso
Kryptos - The Coils of Apollyon

Still need to listen to the new Meshuggah properly, and I liked Aborted's new album a lot too.

I sign below these statements. :)

Lunar Aurora's Hoagascht is absolutely immense. Like others have mentioned, it takes a little while to sink if you loved their previous albums. For me, its right up there witrh Andacht. Terrific atmosphere.

For me so far it's

Desaster - The Arts Of Destruction
Asphyx - Deathhammer
High On Fire - De Vermis Mysteriis
Napalm Death - Utilitarian
Cannibal Corpse - Torture
Lunar Aurora - Hoagascht
Aborted - Global Flatline
Mgla - With Hearts Toward None
Burzum - Umskiptar
Proclamation - Nether Tombs Of Abaddon
Azaghal - Nemesis
Goatwhore - Blood For The Master

Haven't heard the new Abigail Williams so I can't add it yet. But from word of mouth is sounds killer. Same for Sigh.
BTW, the new VH kills. Best they've sounded since 1984. They're back to being a proper Rock band as opposed to pop music. DLR makes EVH play guitar the way he was meant to play it. Good stuff for sure.

I'm really looking forward to hearing this one, I got into the demo a few weeks back thanks to a drunk fb friend recommending it out of nowhere, and this sounds amazing. I don't think DDR has ever had an original mindblowing album released*, just a few amazing reissues, but this one has the ability to pull that off.

*Not to say shit label, no, really good label, lots of really good albums, and some mindblowing songs, just nothing I'd give higher than the low 80's too, until now hopefully.

That song actually awakened some interest in hearing the whole work, it mildly reminded me of Ahab at points but it does have a whole lot going on in there. It reminds me a bit of Process Of Guilt on their second album, imbuing a typical style and sub-genre with many outside influences, thus making it far more enjoyable than it would be at first.

But that was just a first impression, I'll have to listen to the complete work to see if they're really on to what I think they are! ;)

Yeah I can sort of see that, the production on the lighter bits is very similar to Ahab's open jangliness. Quite different from the demo, which was just like getting smashed in the face over and over with an exceptionally heavy rock, but very cool.

The new Angel Witch album after the fourth song is passable, but at least for me it might take a few more spins for it to work out. It just seems so phoned in, the soloing is great but the vocals are kind of bland and I just expected a lot more from this band. Utilitarian by Napalm death also suffered from the same fate, thus far its been mediocre for me these past three months with only the new Earth, Ketzer, and Cannibal Corpse really doing it for me.

edit- The new Sigh was great as well.

Here's my top 5, in no particular order:

Aborted - Global Flatline (This is my favorite album of 2012 so far)
Hour of Penance - Sedition (Picks up right where Paradogma left off)
Ketzer - Endzeit Metropolis (A bit disappointing, but still good)
Charon - Suplhur Serpah (Just discovered this album yesterday, and it's great)
Cannibal Corpse - Torture

I still have to give the new High on Fire a listen, and Words of Farewell's debut should be a contender for the top 5 when I get my hands on it.

Barren earth - The Devil's Resolve is absolutely beautiful. I will be spinning this for a looong time. And the new Sigh is, ofcourse, nothing short of a minor masterpiece. I'm also digging the new Black Breath, pretty underrated band in my opinion. Some other 2012 albums I probably should buy are:

Cannibal Corpse - Torture
Borknagar - Urd
Viikate - Petäjäveräjät
Burzum - Umskiptar
Swallow The Sun - Emerald Forest And The Blackbird
Anathema - Weather Systems
Asphyx - Deathhammer

Out of interest, what is the sound on Incurso like? I never actually minded the way those guys put songs together, it's actually pretty riffy and full of melodic flair to break up the endless noodling, but both of the full lengths have disgustingly clean and gutless production, and as such the early EP's are the only things I listen to much.

Exactly the same. I never liked that style of production which all these tech-death bands seem to be going for. It doesn't take away much from Incurso, but it would have been so much more with a better sound.

Goatwhore - Blood For The Master. The best Goatwhore yet. I always saw these guys as a mediocre act but the latest full-length was sweet as fuck.

Cannibal Corpse - Torture. Pretty much their best sounding album for decades, it has the clarity and wall of sound of Kill and Evisceration Plague but sounds a lot more organic.

I admit I too thought the length is a problem, but the technical ability of this band cannot be questioned. The songwriting is spectacular too. Deffo a growing album

Long and monotonous they say.

I must add (2012) Sigh - In Somniphobia.
I'm late to the show but I just started to give this some time after (2012) Lunar Aurora - Hoagascht!

So far:
*Woods of Ypres - Grey Skies and Electric Light
*Swallow the Sun - Emerald Forest and the Blackbird
*Naglfar - Teras
*Dodecahedron - S/T

Best of those must be the Dodecahedron album. In the Deathspell Omega style of BM, but with a unique edge. Just found out that Ahab and Evoken are bringing out new albums this year. Looking forward to those a lot.
