I was basically just trying to say that a lot of stuff fits into the black metal genre, so calling, say, Belketre not BM or not fitting some idea of a science of BM is a bit unfair. I think I didn't express myself correctly. Didn't mean to start much of a discussion.

I'm looking for bands that sound very similar to Emperor, like to the extent that Thulcandra sounds like Dissection.

If an era must be picked, I'd like it to be preferably closest to the Anthems & Equilibrium sound.

Most similar to this specific style:

Also check out Ceremonial Castings. One of the few symphonic bands I like. Salem is really good.

How about Artefact, from France? They're absolutely amazing and definitely a style you're looking for.

There's Belphegor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A8yxDG2wWA
There's Behemoth (though I warn you they have a distinct mix with brutal death metal on their later albums)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpxyrPTaWfM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMWwsfqMs_o
and then finally there's this project called Merhim made my a MA member.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqxHVYFR5ek
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_dHDI7j498
I don't know who the fuck is it on here but you guys need to find him and tell him to get his ass back on that project because those two songs he posted are excellent!

I'm starting a little to drift away from the relentless brutality approach of bands like Marduk, Funeral Mist and so on and would really appreciate if someone would be so kind and give me some recommendations on stuff in the vein of Mgla, Strid, Wolves In the Throne Room, early Bathory and Urfaust. Atmospheric, kind of melodic but still with an evil/dark/gloomy feel to it.

Thanks!

Has anyone heard Altar of Plague's recent split? Is it any good?

How about some Arckanum, Sargeist, Sorhin, Dødsengel, Hirilorn, Calvarium and Svartsyn? Early Bathory strikes me as an odd one among the others, so I won't really take it into account here. Ask John_Sunlight for bands that sound like Strid, and do check out Min Kniv.

Say which ones you liked the most, and I'll see what more I can think of. Choose right, and you won't run of out recommendations from me. :P

Oh, and since you mentioned Wolves in the Throne room, you might want to check out Der Weg Einer Freiheit. I found their music to be a good collection of all the elements I thought were any good in WitTR's music. Or perhaps Altars of Plague (start with White Tomb), which Necroticism here mentioned, if you're fond of long songs with many boring passages to go with some really good material.

Thanks a bunch!
Sorhin have I listened to a long time and I know of Sargeist but haven't heard them yet. Gonna listen to rest of your recommendations first thing in the morning. :D

Oh, and about early Bathory; It's wasn't particularly the style per se I referred to rather than the dark atmosphere of say, The Return... or Under the Sign of the Black Mark. Should've added that in the first post.

Paysage D'Hiver is a must. Recommend you check out all of their albums/demos if you enjoy atmospheric BM.

So many to choose from! I am just going to be totally random here! Give Rauhnacht's debut a spin, it is a pretty enjoyable release classed as Alpine black metal, nice atmosphere and the vocalist is pretty grim sounding. Try Walknut's one and only release 'Graveforests and...' and if you like it also check out Coldworld's debut, more ambient based this time, but an excellent release all the same.

Now this release below is by no means random and a absolute must! -

One album you have to try and give it a chance to sink in is Melancolia's "The Dark Reflection of Your Soul'. I can not praise this album highly enough and should be more well known. The atmosphere is huge and dark sounding thanks to the tasteful use of keyboards, giving it a spacey feel. Some of the riffs head into technical death territory, complete with unusual time signatures and arrangements =, the guitar tone is perfect and the production spot on. This is pretty unique and I can't really compare it to any other black metal band I know. It is extremely rare so you will not find a physical copy, a stunning release to say the least.

Melancolia is good if you really, really love those Em | C chord progressions. The music is much more active and fast-paced than the band name implies.

Yeah, agree Ilwhyan, the band name is misleading indeed. The album is packed full of so many riffs and changes, for me it never gets boring or wears thin. It would be included in my lust of all time greats if I had one!

Im looking for about 10 or so of the best Swedish black metal albums. Any suggestions on what bands, and what albums might be worth listening to?

Be more specific - taste is subjective, and there is no official list of top ten. Also mention examples of what you've enjoyed so far. The help threads are for asking recommendations in a certain niche of style, not for bands in an arbitrary "quality category". If you're completely new to black metal, mention what bands you know already and what you though of them, even ones you didn't like - just remember to specify why.

I have a pretty good grasp on awesome Swedish black metal and I'd be glad to give you some recommendations of my own favorites;

Craft - Terror Propaganda
Armagedda - Only True Believers
Sorhin - I Det Glimrande Morkrets Ljus
Marduk - Plague Angel
Avsky - Scorn (start with that, truly magnificent, and then listen rest of the albums Mass Destruction and Malignant)
Drapsnatt - I Denna Skog
Ondskapt - Dodens Evangelium
Malign - Fireborn & Divine Facing (EPs)
Abruptum - Evil Genius (compilation with the best tracks, don't bother checking in the rest)
Ofermod - Mystérion Tés Anomias

Anyone here recommend black metal that focuses less on satanism and more on gloominess/depression? It doesn't have to be depressive black metal, just something that creates a depressing atmosphere like doom metal. An example for me would be Immortal.

Strid from Norway seems perfect for you! Also Craft from Sweden should you check in, not as gloomy as
Strid but pretty straight forward harsh black in the vein of Darkthrone and such but with a more nihilistic, chaotic approach rather than the usual satanism/devilworship. Which also of course reflects back in the lyrics. Pure Hated.

Oh, and Sterbend and Urfaust for fuck sake! :D

If you decide to give Strid or Sterbend a listen I highly recommend you'd start with the songs Nattevandring (Strid) and Einsamkeit by Sterbend. Can almost guarantee you'll find them quite good. :)

Is the lyrical focus important? There are many deeply satanic bands with extremely melancholic musical aesthetics.

One particularly depressive black metal song I like is Blood is the Way by Black Stench (Shatraug). The rest of the full-length is not in line with this track.

Kinda, I often look for bands to write about certain topics, Satanism, not so much. I didn't know how Satanism and gloom could be combine effectively, either.

Satanism and gloom...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyjeLjFaJrI Sargeist is all about melancholy and satanism.

Sacrilegious Impalement has a couple of utterly gloomy songs, but none of the seemed to be available on youtube. Mostly the material is fairly typical cleanly produced black metal. These should get you started. ;)

To be frank, I'm not sure if Blood Red Fog is precisely a satanic band, but it fits well with these musically.

Request from me: black metal with this kind of vocals:

Enochian Crescent

Music preferably in the vein of Vitsaus, Teloch, Cosmic Church and such, but pretty much anything goes.

Also, that vocal recording pic confirmed what I suspected: SLK records shirtless in a sweaty caveman-like delirium. You can almost hear the man stink in the recordings.

does anybody know of any Norsecore-style black metal with Gothenburg riffs thrown in occasionally? I'm not looking for anything like Dissection, Sacramentum or Thulcandra and Unanimated. Not the typical melodeath/black mix, but literally Norsecore with occasional Gothenburg riffs.

Endstille's latest album has some riffs which I'd describe as similar to the more melodic ones in Sacramentum's debut, don't know if that's what you're after specifically but it wouldn't hurt to try. ;)
