Well, Helfahrt means "passage to Hel" in German.

My local scene has got some real stinkers. Bands with names like:

Pizza Party Massacre
Torn the Fuck Apart
David Hasselhoff on Acid
High Rise Robots

Yeah.

Among spanish speaker metalheads, it's common to say it like necroPHAgist, when even the spanish word already has the accent in CRO (like necrófago).

Turbonegro sounds terrible too.

About badly spoken names, what about Taake? people just say 'TA-keh' (like Tad without the d), when the double a (archaic form, currently replaced by the vowel å) sounds like an o. Everytime I say 'tóke' here no one gets it - the same happens when I say Mike Okerfeldt instead Akerfeldt.

I always thought Taake was Take, but I always said it as Tay Ake.

Japanese, Latin, and Middle English ruined me. I see 'Taake' and all I can think is 'Tah-ah-kay.'

One name that looks nice but has a crappy pronunciation is Xasthur. When I hear it I can’t help but think of “disaster” without the “di”.

I don't know, I pronounce it as "Shasthur", which has a nice ring to it, if you ask me.....

I used to pronounce it with sh as well, because in my language that’s what X usually stands for. I only realised it was “zaster” after watching that One Man Metal documentary.

Except it's not true. It's "Fürze". "Furze" sounds funny but doesn't mean anything at all.

Something like 'Passage to Hel'... speaking of which, Equilibrium wrote a song called 'Fahrtwind', now if THAT's not ambiguous... means Riding Wind btw.

I'm not gonna argue over how the german word for flatulences is being pronounced or written. :D I never used the word with the Ü and believe me, I use a lot of scatological humour!

It's a very interesting field of study, especially to an English speaker. You can really see the shared blood of the Germanic languages when you compare them and read about how they branched off from one another. But hell, that's a philological topic. I'm drunk.

Anyway, back on topic: I guess these aren't horrible band names, but I really dislike sentences as names.

Daylight Dies
Swallow the Sun

I love both of those bands, but I really wish they'd called themselves something else.

I personally can't stand the band name Wintersun. It sounds wimpy, soft and fucking sappy.

I remember reading in my Decibel magazine that there was a band called Dr. Acula

LAME!

I find Wintersun just sounds like the name of some kind of hand-cream; There used to be a hand-balm type thing at home called "Snowfire", and Wintersun sounds even more hand-cream-esque than that.

Actually, Snowfire is a pretty cool name... might keep an eye on it.

Wintersun doesn't sound too terrible, but it carries a connotation of a weakened state. In the winter, the sun obviously has less power over the earth, so a winter sun is something of a half-assed sun.

Yes, they are.

sentence: 1. Grammar . a grammatical unit of one or more words that expresses an independent statement, question, request, command, exclamation, etc., and that typically has a subject as well as a predicate, as in John is here. or Is John here? In print or writing, a sentence typically begins with a capital letter and ends with appropriate punctuation; in speech it displays recognizable, communicative intonation patterns and is often marked by preceding and following pauses.

I'll just quote my answer from the last thread on this:

Quote:
Running Wild, as much as they are one of my favorite bands, honestly could have come up with something better than that. The name doesn't represent the music at all and just looks childish, especially with that sloppy logo. The logo characters themselves are ok, I guess, but the "w" not being capitalized and the shoddy writing makes it look very ugly and unprofessional (and not for effect, either).

The logo is quite mediocre, but I think the band name is alright. Compared to Hic Iacet, for example, which I suppose is valid latin, but always reminds me of hiccups.

I realized long ago that if the Latin is correct, it's not metal.

Just a side note: The pronunciation of Taake is awfully close to "talk", with just a tiny, tiny "eh" at the end.

Eat a Helicopter. just fuckin stupid, and they sound just as awful as the name would imply. sometimes a bad name can make me giggle, which makes me hate it slightly less, i.e. Fuck...I'm dead, or the previously stated Torn the Fuck apart (which really looks like Tom the fuck apart when typed out), or behold the arctopus

Funny you should say that, as I tried forming a doom metal band in college (and was completely unsuccessful), but if I were to get it formed, I would've called it Icy Sun, which is basically the same concept. It's from a lyric in Black Sabbath's Behind the Wall of Sleep: "Icy sun with frosty glow." I think it sounds really cool, and I always though Wintersun sounded cool too.

Reminds me of Fuck... I'm Dead the grindcore band. Apparently they shortened the name to Fuck I'm Dead recently, which is actually even worse.

Was Assück mentioned already?
