I've been on something of a black metal kick lately, preferring it over death metal because I'm able to relegate it to background noise and ambience whilst reading. The new semester's starting, and I have a gargantuan reading list to tackle, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for some instrumental metal.

Melody takes precedent over heaviness here; for example, I'm loving Ne Obliviscaris [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMorAdnCixg] and Agalloch [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIzoyPfPKO4 ] lately. I also really like the big, bombastic, sweeping movements of Emperor [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QeW-tyRbl8]. Black(ish) metal seems to be best for background ambience, and the only disruptions are in the vocals, so something along these lines [Rotting Christ/Emperor/Agalloch/Ne Obliviscaris] minus vocals, is what I'm trying to find. Any help is appreciated, and thank you very much in advance.

p.s. If you think you have a really good recommendation for me that DOES have vocals, I still welcome it, as I'm always listening to music, not just while reading.

Might not be as metal as you'd like but nachtreich definitely fits the other criteria. http://youtu.be/dt1GQbTkLqs

(Sorry I can't elaborate that well. On my phone on the way to class late. :P)

both these recs are great. interesting and thoughtful, the lack of heaviness is not a problem.
