Wicked looking ute! Looks like a cross between a Dodge Charger and a Chevy El Camino. And speaking of which, I understand the car brands/models are known by different names down in Australia- isn't a Chevy called a "Holden" or something?

Don't be the guy who makes thread after thread on conlanging forums about how Wisconsin accents are really unique and interesting.

If you're talking about Wisconsin, probably not. But a lot of us are discussing what, up until the era of mass communications, used to be full-blown dialects riddled with bizarre Aboriginal, Maori, Zulu/Xoha, Hindi etc loan words and expressions which would be really unfamiliar to anyone who learned "standard English". I find etymology and dialect really interesting - for example there are phrases I thought were universal in the antipodes that seem to have gone out of parlance in the space of a generation or less besed on what people are saying here.

Allo me old china - hello mate

Cor blimey - expressing surprise

don't panic - panic

Holden is an originally Australian company now owned by GM. They still produce their own vehicles, though for some reason a bunch of twats think putting a Chevvy badge on their Commodore makes them cool. I think the Commodore has been exported to the US as a Pontiac or some crap like that.

Ha, my friends and I would refer to my old '90 Honda Civic as 'beast', only because every time I'd get it fixed for problems, I'd drive it out of the mechanics and literally something else would go wrong with it straight away.

"Brah" or "Bro-hamm" (So-Cal)= friend or buddy,
"Renee" (northern Cali)= hot chick,
"Betty" (So-cal)= hot chick,
"Cut eighty" (nor-Cal)= take off, leave, go somewhere else, split,
Four Twenty (originated in northern Cali but now widespread) = anything related to marijuana.

I've heard bro-hamm/brah/breh but in all my years in the bay area all those others are foreign to me :???:. Back in'05 I lived in Las Vegas for about a year and was told by multiple people that I had a pretty "California accent" which I didn't think existed unless you looked like this.

over here certain people say "honest" after they tell you something just to try and convince you what they said was true, usually it isn't.
it's almost like if they say it, it's not true.

crapped out - clapped out, broken rooted etc
gassa - gas station, petrol station
swappa crate - [a dozen] refillable 750ml beer bottles in a wooden crate
hard out - you just said something difficult to believe, really?! etc
going out - dating

there are many americanisms [and a lot of spelling too actually] that i think i prefer to some of our local expressions
theater vs theatre, lazer vs laser etc

"owt" = anything/something.
"nowt" = nothing.

For example, "I went to the record shop but I couldn't see owt worth buying".

the best word of all time is kinda endemic (as far as I can tell) to my hometown, or somewhere really close to it.
the word is MOOT, and it means vagina. it's pronounced so as to rhyme with "foot" and is possibly the best word ever.
eg. "yeah mate i mal meninga'd her good. had a nice moot."

ah, bugger - I thought it was a mid north coast-NSW thing. in any case it's still a GREAT word.
we also had the word "gronk" that meant ugly, white trash person.

I can't speak for the rest of Cali but the word “bad” seems to get used quite a bit in the Bay Area lately. Usually it's used to point out an attractive female, example: "That bitch is hella bad”. Simply means good looking I guess. Can be confusing if you've never heard the word used in slang before.

I don't know if people still say "Cut 80" anymore. It referred to interstate route 80, which was the major east-west highway across northern California, heading to Sacramento, Reno and points east. So, like if you lived in San Francisco or the Oakland area, to "cut 80" was like saying, "hit the road."

I used to live in Polson, Montana and when poeple, usually kids, made a joke, they said "jokes" instead of "Just kidding" or "Just joking". Several people there have attested to Polson being the only place in the world where they say that. Living in Denver now, the saying does seem very strange, but it's the most normal thing in the world when you live there.

That sounds very confusing indeed, but I have been known to use "mad" as something that's good. Example: "Mitochondrion are mad."

I suppose Singaporean slang or Singlish isn't too well known around most parts of the world. Here's some of it. Mostly just a mix of chinese dialects and english. Or English but phrased in a chinese-type sentence structure.

Chope = unofficially reserved. aka "I chope this seat here for you"
Just whack = To plow into an activity without any prior preparation or full knowledge or said activity.
ceebai/cheebye = Cunt. But frequently used in normal(crude) conversation such as "ceebai, that band is awesome!"
Power = Good. For eg, "how was Malevolent Creation live?" "Power, bro!"
Chiong = literally "charge" in hokkien, but used for a variety of meanings. For, contraband cigarettes are chiong cigarettes.

Phrasing is another weird thing. Here's how a normal conversation would go.

"Sup man, how's it going?" = "Bro, how's you?"
"I'm alright. Say, you eaten lunch yet?" = "Ok la. Eh how, makan already?"
"Not yet dude, what's up?" = "Haven't la, why ah?"
"Let's grab a bite at that food court, the chicken rice is really good" = "How, we go food court? The ji fan there power ah"

It's the same way here! We've had snow and temperatures dropping to the single digits (Fahrenheit) this past week, after a relatively harmless fall and beginning of winter. And then it's supposed to be back up in the 50's come Wednesday!

In high school, we would refer to driving around while smoking weed as "booning". I'm pretty sure it was because a lot kids would go do it driving down a road called Boone Road in the next city over that had very few cops. I still use that term with people from around my area, but I was surprised a little coming to college when I would ask someone if they wanted to "go for a boon" or something and they wouldn't know what I meant. :lol:

"square" = slang for a cigarette

"are we straight?" = you're not mad at me are you?/we cool?/no hard feelings?

"lake-effect snow" = anytime the local weathermen say Chicago won't get snow, but then gets snow. There's a more technical reason than that, but it's used fairly loosely.

"Wego" = the town of West Chicago. Which is not actually really near Chicago, it's like an hour away.

"Chitown" = Chicago. Mostly used by people not from Chicago

"Crook County" = Cook County

"The Rahm Father/Rahmfather" = Rahm Emanuel (current Chicago mayor, former Chief of Staff for Obama, former legislator)

"Space ship" = the renovated Soldier Field. Not as common as it used to be.

"Southern Illinois" = seems to commonly denote anything south of I-80

"collar counties" = the counties bordering Cook County

"downstate" = everywhere else not in the collar counties (even if it's west)

"The Loop" = http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... op_Map.png

"The L" = Chicago's above-ground ("elevated") train system; essentially a subway that mostly operates above streets

"Sears Tower" = the former name of Willis Tower, and the only name anyone uses (I have never heard anyone from Illinois call it by its modern name)

Also, nobody within a hundred mile radius of Chicago refers to expressways by their number, it's always by their name. "The Stevenson," "The Eisenhower," etc.

Not quite true. I think I know most of them, but I live about 35/40 miles west and I only refer to them by their numbers.

Without cheating:
Eisenhower = 294
Reagan = 88
Kennedy = 90/94
Stevenson = 55

Could be wrong, I can't remember what 290 is, or even any of the other major expressways. And then there's Lake Shore Drive, which apparently has a number but I never had any idea.

I can't think of many specific cultural sayings, though I've been doing everything in my power to make "mjolnired" a thing (super drunk).
