Looking very forward to it. Hugely underrated band. Hope its a little more consistent than Hexaeon though.

I hadn't listened to them for a while, and forgot they played death metal now haha. It's a pretty dull song, too many chugs, and it's pretty damn light..

Agreed, I went in with a smidgen of hope that they would put out something in the vein of ...And So the Night Became, but instead we got a bland "blackened" death metal track :annoyed:

Actually Ascension of Terror is one of my favourite death metal albums, so in concept I'm not against their death metal direction, but this was bleh.

It's not chuggy, but it is pretty mediocre and too slow without interesting enough riffs.

Yeah, chuggy was the wrong word, but lots of sort of parts where the notes kinda jab and stop. I couldn't think of a better word for it.

I'm not necessarily opposed to the death metal side of the band... but I was certainly hoping for something superior to this. I definitely prefer the band's early black metal output as opposed to the later death metal stuff.

Just heard the new track. Didn't exactly blow me away, but was good none the less. Probably a couple of minutes too long. Will pick up the album as soon as its released. Life long fan who have thus far only let me down me with Hexaeon.

Good review? Sounds like a label fluff piece. Very superficial.

Positive review, but a utterly terribly written one.

Checked out another tune called Saligia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3LOkIbq0Ho. Sounds pretty cool and a lot more interesting than Ruin & Resurret,

A few nods to ye olde style Aeternus too. Anyone had a lisyten to the whole album yet?

This song is actually way better, still doesn't touch anything on Ascension of Terror, but the acoustics are a nice throw back to the old stuff.

Given the full album a few listens now. My verdict is that it's a worthy purchase. Ruin and resurrect is the weakest track by a mile, the rest ranging from pretty good to excellent. Similar direction to Hexaeon but with much better execution in regards to songwriting and arrangement. Hexaeon always sounded rushed to me. Many good ideas but too many of the songs sounded thrown together. More than a few nods to Shadows and Ascension too. I think most later day fans will enjoy it.

Saligia makes me feel like I was listening to a DJ mixing together one of the duller songs of Gateways of Annihilation (that's everything other than Summoning Redemption pretty much) and mid-era Black Label Society. Then at one point he decides to throw in some acoustics from a middle-era In Flames song. Forgettable.

Gateways is THE Morbid Angel album as far as I'm concerned. BLS references are a little harsh. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Nah hes right, Summoning Redemption is the only killer song, and only because of that breakdown around halfway through.
