"The dark crystal" pretty much trumps all other disturbing "children's films. Elf-rape overtones for the win.

I adored dinosaurs when I was a kid (still rather fascinated with them, actually), and because of that my mother bought me the first TLBT movie. I watched half of it, and quickly went back to the Discovery Channel documentaries. Dinosaurs - mauling and tearing = boring (for a six year old, at least).

I had ALL the Land Before Time movies on VHS and let me tell you, they don't even come close to the toaster. As much as I loved dinosaurs as a kid, there's only so much "YUP YUP YUP" I can take from that little yellow dinosaur. All the characters were either unlikeable (the little brontosaurus and triceratops) or too stupid (Petrie the pterodactyl and the mute guy).

I always wanted to punch Sarah (the triceratops) in the face. What an uppity bitch.

Ducky was rad as was Spike, you crazy... it was really only Sarah that I hated. I always wished Sharptooth would have eaten her.

Fucking awesome album that one, I think I have the original pressing, too. Absu's finest for sure!

Also, if your favourite Absu album is Tara, you're probably BastardHead.

That's weird, I don't feel like a BastardHead.

And always remember to search through the dark corners of your house guys. You don't know the treasures that you may find in that old cardboard or wooden box your family just left to rot in solitude.
Seriously, you may find a lost collection of rare vinyl albums!

You all are crazy and/or on drugs. The best kids movie ever is Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland.

Little Nemo is amazing. Also in a similar trippy vein is the Felix the Cat movie. That thing has some truly acid trip gone wrong moments.

all this talk about disturbing/trippy/scary children's movies made me remember
"The Black Cauldron". Actually it isn't disturbing (it's Disney, hey) but I saw this as
kid in the cinema and while I was old (8) enough to watch it, there were quite some
moms and das with their little 4/5 year old kids in it. And when the Horned King
appeared fully on screen there was so much crying and all the parents
leaving the hall (whimps and posers undoubtly, hehe) with their little ones.
Hehe, I still remember it and it still makes me smile - good ol' Horned King.

I saw that when I was 7. It was rather good, I really appreciated the horrific aspects of it. I was a sucker for that stuff as a kid.

The little dog was genuinely irritating,
Spoiler: show
but still it was sad when it seemed that he died. Of course he didn't, really.

Plenty of children's movies are quite watchable for adults aswell. Just because it's made for children doesn't mean it should be half-witted, derpy and overall condescending.

:-D Love that movie! have watched it countless times and always join in laughing tears
when Archimedes get's his laugh-flash

edit: btw - I highly suggest reading T. H. White's "The Once and Future King" books.
Said movie is based on book one called "The Sword in the Stone" and all together
are some of the best books I've ever read. Obviously the three following books don't
have that fun aspect as Camelot went down...

When I was a kid one of my favorite movies to watch was Interview with the Vampire. Like the scene where the guy gets cut in half by a scythe.

I wasn't too much older when Starship Troopers came out. I suggested seeing that film to my parents - none of us had any idea what we were in for though! Holy shit!

Wow, I actually read the books the Black Cauldron is based on, but never knew about the movie. After reading the plot, I can tell you with certainty that the books are wayyyyy better. For one thing, the Black Cauldron is destroyed because Taran's "friend" (they actually hate each other for most of the book) sacrifices himself by jumping into it alive, which breaks it but kills him also. For another, the Cauldron Born are there from the beginning, but in the movie they apparently only come out briefly at the end. Also, the Horned King isn't even the main villain, he's the champion of the main villain, and gets killed at the end of the first book (the Black Cauldron gets destroyed at the end of the second).

Anyway, the Chronicles of Prydain is a good fantasy series, though geared more toward children/young adults. It's a classic "hero's journey" type story, but it's more interesting than many because it's based on Welsh myths and legends, so there aren't any typical fantasy dwarves or elves or orcs or any of that. If you enjoy lighthearted fantasy, you could probably enjoy it.

Also, it's interesting to note that the band Cauldron Born got their name from the same series.
