So you played Altoona a couple times with some of my buddies' old bands... They were always fun shows.

Took some time last night to nurture a growing fondness for early Deicide over a mug of hot chocolate. Some pretty intense shit, all things considered. They sure did do a good job at sounding...Satanic. Not really sure how else to describe it.

Also took a better listen and reached a more favorable opinion on Altars of Madness. Hooray? American DM isn't my thing in most cases, but some of the early classics are pretty sweet.

Early Deicide is really dang coolio, one of the few "traditional" dm bands I find really enjoyable - I think it's the vicious atmosphere - same can be said for Altars of Madness.

In fact, the more I think about it, I think I can count on my fingers the death metal bands I genuinely enjoy. Cryptopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Morbid Angel...Bolt Thrower....

Those are 5 of the most well known death metal bands, have you delved much into the depths of the genre? I love all those bands too, though. Well, not the biggest Deicide fan other than the early shit.

The current death metal direction of the FFA is really reminding me how little death-metal I've already listened to, and now that I'm starting to really enjoy the genre, how much I've got to look forward to.

Confessions include having never listened to Entombed aside from Wolverine Blues, never having listened to Deicide, Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel... the list goes on. I'm sort of excited that I'm finally getting it though - I've been meaning to start on Entombed for a while, having eventually gotten a taste for death-metal.

Master are mainly responsible for this new found taste.

Mhm, I'm really into death/doom, and a good chunk of modern death metal, but I just can't get into a lot of "traditional" death metal. But, I'd be open to all sorts of suggestions! :)

I used to be all about death metal, but I'm mostly a man of mass, if you will. Heaviness comes from slow, crawling cavernous riffs and insane guitar tones - not necessarily speed - so I like slower-midpaced death metal. I like it quite a bit.

I can get into some slower DM here and there, a lot of it can be great when done right, but eh, it's really only super-awesome for me in small doses...I like my DM faster and more bizarre/strange than the usual Incantation-style dirges. I just like it sounding as unhinged and crazy as possible.

I love it when death metal bands combine aggressive riffing with creepy melodic sections/melodies, e.g Runemagick does this really well. Just listen to these:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MarO2TT-oJs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTItdEXA ... ather=True (7:58)

I've been listening to Cathedral's debut agaun and I can see why people consider it to be a classic. The Black Sabbath-esque riffing combined with the harsh vocals fit really well.

I like death metal that is good. I have no style preferences. I love all types of death metal equally, except melodeath which is corrupted.

Speak it. I hear the words and bear witness to their truth.

What instantly jumped into my mind was Venenum's "Bewitched Craft".

It is 50 and sunny outside. Spring has finally arrived. A good day for a pleasant stroll and some Jethro Tull.

Shut up, new guy.

I'm exploring my 80s/teenage years with an amused retrospective view. Hearing ZZ Top's Planet of Women still brings back the taste of the army canteen meat pies with a meat patty, Emmethaler cheese, pickles, and a fried egg with all the spices there were available.

So many changes. MA's definitely gentrifying, that's why Lippy left. Too many cock-of-the-walk fops around, all too busy preening and admiring their thin-souled reflections to discuss heavy metal the way it should TRULY be discussed.

The true way to discuss metal is to scream interjections and insanities at each other while drinking beer.

By then all of us will have matching denim vests with "Encyclopaedia Metallum" stretched across the back like motorcycle clubs do. On our front right chest will be a patch with the Bolt Thrower logo, and on the right are username with the year we joined underneath it.

Of course, only the cool kids can have them and no one past 2010 can join our ranks as the Metal elite.

I actually was into it once, but nowadays I can't name more than maybe two albums that I find enjoyable. The melodic counterpart of death metal is black metal, melodeath is utterly pointless. Then there is that fact that it mingles with metalcore and similar abominations... It's a subgenre that seems to be specifically cooked up to appeal to a broader audience.
