Anyone interested in challenging themselves to write a song involving characters and a story arc comprising a beginning, middle, and end? You could do this with a single song, an EP, or an album, if you're so inclined. Style is totally open as long as it's some form of metal. Post in this thread if you're in.

Participants:
Guitartheist
Dystopia4
InfiniteNexus
ShaolinLambKiller
Inspector_Satan
Big_Grand
AullidoSepulcral
CloggedUrethra

Submissions should be uploaded to their own bandcamps, and I will create a compilation bandcamp at the end of the challenge with a link to each release. Deadline will be August 25th.

Another one already? Wasn't expecting that, but suppose I'll give it a shot.

I'll give it a shot, I've done some more loose concept pieces in yzordderrex. I might give a shot to do so on something else.

If I can get my recording equipment sorted in time I'll try this one out.

This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Fuck writing a song, I want to write metal the way they wrote classical back in the day. It has movements, it says something, even without lyrics. Write a fucking masterpiece. Write a story. Instead of just writing a song or two from a certain genre, I think this is a REAL songwriting challenge. This will challenge us. I'm going to work really hard on this one.

I'm excited about this one as well, I've written my story and begun work on a 4 song EP.

I'll start actually thinking about this in a couple of weeks. got too much currently going on.. but I'm kinda thinking something 'cosmic' maybe if I get a certain guitar in... that might help.

This is definitely a reason to get a new guitar. And I think you should ask yourself: Do your current amps suffice for this challenge or does it require a new amp also? It's something we have to ponder. I'm going to use a new guitar for part of this.

So I was originally going to base it off Cormac McCarthy's "All the Pretty Horses", but on second thought I might do Hemingway's "The Snows of Kilimanjaro".

I already have the amps that could handle what I want and techincally one guitar would be perfect... but I want a new one for it.

You never know. A different amp might be better for this. That's going to be my excuse at least, haha.

What does one mean by a story arc?

If you can find someone who wants to use your lyrics with their music, yes.

fuuuuuuuuck, I've hardly written anything for this. I might have to pull out like a high schooler at prom from this challenge unfortunately, I have an impending death in the family that I have to go take care of. We'll have to see.

Late to the game, but I'll sign up for something short.

Don't worry if you're late or haven't started, I'm probably going to do all the writing and recording for my 4-song release in a single weekend. All of my songwriting challenge efforts are 1 or 2 day affairs with short polishing sessions in the week or so afterward. Added CloggedUrethra to the list of participants.

I have 3 songs done on guitar, 2 powertabbed out, 1 left to tab. Then will listen to the midis while practising drums to them. The story part probably won't be serious at all.

I think I'm going to have to pull out of this challenge unfortunately. My family has to take precedence right now.

I'll still try to do this but it's getting slim to none for me to do it. I'm leaving next week to go out of town.

I'm going to leave you guys on the list anyway, but it's understandable if you don't complete the challenge. This one was fairly ambitious.

Mine is cause I forgot all about this till it was bumped and I'm leaving town for two weeks so I doubt I'll be able to write or record anything in the week that would be remaining upon my return. mainly due to it being a story arc thing.

10 days left, anyone else working on their's? Got the drums memorized and recorded them on Tuesday. Recording the guitars tonight and will start writing the story. The premise for the story and most of the vocal patterns are done, just gotta write the words.

I have two of four instrumentals complete, and the other two roughly planned. The story is finalized and I have lyrical lines/themes for each song. I'm confident I'll finish.

Life seems to be getting in the way, so it's highly likely I will bitch out of this.

I jumped on a tour later this month with a friend's band and have been caught up learning a bunch of new songs so I'm probably not going to finish on time either. I'm still going to try and wrap up the song I've been working on but likely won't get to the story or find someone to do vocals in time.

This one really flew by. I didn't really get around to recording what I wanted to for this, but in the meantime I started jamming with some people who I hope to start a band with, so these past two months weren't a total waste.

I'm done. If anyone else finishes, send me a link to the bandcamp you've uploaded to and I'll create a page that links to every submission for the July/August Songwriting Challenge Reviews Thread.

Everything's recorded, just gotta make the mixdowns tonight and upload. Looking forward to hearing other people's submissions (if anyone wants to make an extra 128kbps zip with their tracks, my rural internet will love you). This was a fun challenge, thanks!

Reviews thread: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=100669

I'm glad you had fun! I enjoyed this challenge as well, and I'm ready to participate in another one as soon as someone else has an idea for one and starts a thread.

My song's written but got caught up with band stuff and lost about a month to it all. I leave for "tour" tomorrow but once I get back next week I'll track an instrumental version and post it. I'm thoroughly terrible with time management lately.

Does it have to be original to the competition or can I submit something that's already written and released?
