The first 2 albums are the best by far, in my opinion (and most other people too). Epic and powerful with some great musicianship.

Anything else out there that is similar to Grave Upheaval? They definitely have a unique take on death/doom, and I can't seem to find anything that is remotely close to their sort of hypnotic, yet frenzied style that sounds like it was either recorded with a million 2x15 cabs or at the bottom of a volcano (or both). There's something special about GU that I'm certain no other band currently emulates, but do any of you more well-versed people know of something that may be on the same path? I'm just being impatient regarding the band's release of their debut album.

I am looking for some doom that is in the vein of Pallbearer, with their band for some reason I can really feel the emotions behind the voice.
TLDR bands like Pallbearer

Also, I don't think Pallbearer is death/doom or funeral doom. :P

What you want is the Doom/Stoner/Sludge Metal Help Thread: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=38296

Looking for really atmospheric (i.e. symphonic) funeral doom like Abstract Spirit.

Here's a clip if you haven't heard them before.

Murkrat are a new funeral doom favorite for me! It's mostly a lady named Mandy doing all the music too. She's Austrailian! Such a unique band with a great sound!

Yeah, Murkrat are pretty cool. Mandy's also fronting a new trad doom band called Crone that are really cool. I don't think they have any releases yet, but here's a cool YouTube video of a recent gig:

Asunder Asunder Asunder everybody!!! Who knows some bands that are similar to the mighty Asunder? Please no mentions of Burning Witch and Graves at Sea, those bands are generic and lame. At least in my opinion. Asunder catches the majestic, melancholic feeling so well that bands like Dissection do with black metal. Their albums are masterworks!!!

I am looking for melodic death/doom bands in the vein of Swallow the Sun and early Amorphis. I don't know any other bands than this, so "obvious" recs are okay.

Well, Daylight Dies would probably fit the bill pretty well.

Try Atten Ash. They are a lesser-known band but one of the better ones in that style.

I would definitely second Lycus and later Aldebaran for fans of Asunder. In addition, you might really like Merkstave, Anhedonist (especially their demo tape, it's excellent), and Seidr.

Anyone knows any band like Winter? I love how they are able to create such bleak atmosphere with clean guitars. I also absolutely love the drumming in this album. Instead of being a background instrument here the drums add a lot to the songs

Might be obvious but it's not quite like winter but when speak of the bleak atmosphere with clean guitars and the drumming being more than just background... but probably Disembowelment would suit you fine. But you probably already know about them.

They don't have what you're searching for in terms of guitars (they use a very meaty tone) but Coffins' first album is basically a modern take on Into Darkness. I kid you not!

Morgion's God of Death and Disease is the best thing these guys ever came up with. Love the clear death metal influence here - though it's no surprise they would eventually switch to doom/death metal just like other bands did.

Hey analog, I just looked into Merkstave based on your rec in a different thread and their demos seem very promising. Any idea where I could have a listen to "Spawn of a Lower Star"?

No idea if anyone has a rip of that online, and I haven't ripped any of my Merkstave stuff either. I think your best bet would be to pick up the full-length from Pesanta: http://pesanta.bigcartel.com/product/merkstave-st

It contains actual studio recordings (instead of basement rehearsal tapes) of the material on the demos. It's an incredible album, and I would highly recommend it.

I'd like to hear some Ambient sounding Doom Metal. Very calm and hypnotic, with sort of an eerie vibe.

Something like Dolorian's self-titled album or Shape of Despair's Shades of...

Stuff like Longing for Dawn is good also, but I'm looking for something lighter and not quite so intense. Also, it's preferable if the vocals are whispered or spoken rather than growled or screamed.

In the meantime, there's a full length on youtube. I'm 4 minutes and change in and wish I had time to listen to the full 42:03.

Also, I'm digging that Ceremonium rec from p. 7

I already mentioned this in the peek years for metal's subgenres thread, but is it safe to say that the peak years of doom/death metal were from 1990 until 1995?

So I've been spending some time trying to explore some unusual regional scenes in order to see if there's any decent stuff from there or not. Yesterday I was going through Latvian bands and I found something that perfectly suits this thread:

http://frailtymetal.bandcamp.com/

Now, I know what you're thinking. That cover seems like something that could've been on an Alcest album right? Yeah, but the album is really great and very interesting. It reminds me of MDB, Doom:VS, old Process Of Guilt or even Disembowelment here and there on some of the sonic textures. It's very diverse and even manages to incorporate violin and female vocals very nicely, while on other points it goes totally funereal and bleak. If nothing else it caught me completely off-guard! And for an album with three 14 minutes songs I can tell you that it's a very easy listening experience.

Haven't heard their first album but this one at least has caught my attention, so I thought I'd share the wealth. ;)

Just found this group called Shallow Rivers, and they're basically a melodic death/doom metal group from Russia:

http://shallowrivers.bandcamp.com/

I can't tell if it's My Dying Bride worship or Saturnus worship (as they are essentially My Dying Bride worship), but whatever it is, it's really good worship and I recommend 'em if you're a fan of MDB or Saturnus.

Greetings, doomed ones!

I'm looking for something in the vein of later Esoteric, particularly the last two albums. I know the music is quite versatile, so I'll narrow it down somewhat. I'm looking for dark, sinister but melancholic and heartfelt music (these aspects may take turns, as they often do in stuff like Esoteric). The music ought to be highly immersive like Esoteric. Great, full-sounding tones, good guitar melodies and no small sense of grandiosity/epicness.

The main criterion is the powerful sense of despondency. When I say melancholic, I mean genuinely darn hopeless, not vaguely sad. It must be utterly, unambiguously depressive, but that must also come in the form of melodies, not simply desolate power chord patterns. Plus points for some grindy/deathy bits à la Disembowelment.

Thankses!

I'd also be interested in such recs as the only ones I can (partially) relate to the last two Esoteric albums are Tyranny and Evoken, two very obvious bands... :(

Alright, guys, I'll give it a shot even though I can't remember the last time I listened to Esoteric, shame on me. So yeah, also don't expect anything remotely in the death/doom vein.

The clues given made me think of Licht erlischt... and the atmosphere on the second album ...and Below, the Retrograde Disciples. "Sinister, but melancholic and heartfelt"? Well, Nerrath draws a truly sinister picture of the future of Europe and mankind as it is. This corresponds with the authentic, heartfelt vocal performance. I love almost everything that guy has released, but actually that is mainly because he writes wonderfully crafted riffs, so I could talk about those now, but listen for yourself... http://youtu.be/rhukxNU44P0
