Unless someone else starts a new one, I was going to start a "riff salad" challenge on April 1st to May 12th-ish.

Sounds fair enough. again I'll sign up but I don't know if I'll get anything done. I might be going out of town at that time.

Ok cool. Maybe two months would be better. I just didn't want to do 4 months since it's a long time.

Yea very true. I say set it like you have it and then allow another 2 weeks if you think some people might actually have some shit just barely done.

You know what would be a cool idea? A non-metal challenge. Everyone has to write a song of any genre that isn't metal for a change. I bet that would be really interesting to listen to and attract a lot of participants.

I had quite the opposite idea, actually. And that is to write a song that you believe encompasses what you believe metal is. Meaning if you wanted to hear a song that you could say was the prime definitive of the spirit of metal, then write it to the best of your ability.

I do like your idea though, Mono.

Both sound pretty cool. I'd just end up doing a later darkthrone ripoff though for your idea haha

yea with arkhane's idea I would probably do some track under Uzumaki.

under mono's the furthest I'd go is probably power violence or some crust. I don't have any in me that isn't caustic and loud.

Then I probably see a "metalest metal" challenge happening more likely if another occurs haha. I don't even know if I'll have time to enter but I thought I'd share my idea.

To be honest, the non-metal one would be easier for me. I do some sleepy ambient tracks fairly well, if I say so myself. But the epitome of metal challenge would do just that: Challenge me. I could hear heavy chugging bluesy riffs, followed by some trash thrash and a shit-ton of William Wallace quotes. :np:

either or is fine with me cause like I stated I already know what I'd do. and I only view challenge as in doing it within a time frame with a rough point of reference to go by.

I like both too. For the non-metal I would probably do a weird jazzy one, maybe an ambient/noise one, and maybe an immature rap one...

For the metalest metal one I'd probably do some brutal death I guess.

Why not have the challenge be one of each? one most metal one non metal.

Seconded.

Only thing is, will people participate? I've noticed a steady decline in participants lately, so hopefully there will be more than 2 or 3 submissions.

Having both would be cool, yeah. I'll definitely participate again for sure!

I think we might have just had a stretch of having them too often. I'd definitely throw something in for a non-metal challenge, and though I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do the 'most' metal one I think it's a pretty good theme and broad enough to get a bunch of people in.

Corpse for the metal just do some more of that bm stuff you do that's good.

Maybe we should have it 4 months long. maybe we will get everyone to do it. who knows.

4 months might be counter productive. People will procrastinate until they lose interest, and then they'll lose interest. At least that's what I think.

It might work better if we give people a certain time to sign up, and then begin the challenge a week or two afterwards. One of the past challenges did that, and I think it turned out pretty great. It might have been the lyrics swap challenge, but I'll have to check to confirm.

Edit: Confirmed.

Maybe the challenges were too lax, and not enough structure. I edited my last post; I didn't think anyone would reply that fast (damnit, SLK).

Seriously though, having a successful challenge is like fishing (from what I can tell). You mostly know what works as bait, but you still gotta wait for the bite. Even then, they'll slip the line sometimes.

Yea I think it also depends on the timing of it. there are certain times it's great where most people are relatively free and creatively interested. I think quite a few of the last ones were too based where it's a terrible time... like where a ton of people were doing finals for school or around holidays that normally involve travel.

Unfortunately time has a lot to do with it =/ I found myself completing two albums this summer after six months of virtually not touching my guitar last semester.

Maybe a lot of you would despise this, but what about a Gothic/Dark Metal challenge ? This would be open to many things and genre fusion, from the flower kinda thing to extreme Death/Black influenced Gothic Metal.
And yeah, the non metal would be great too, I'd try something pure middle eastern.

I like the idea about Gothic/Dark metal challenge, since it is the possibility to experiment a lot. Would participate if it happens.

Will there be a new challenge starting in the future? Talk has been pretty dead around it lately.

I was wondering the same thing. I'll probably participate regardless of theme. The black metal challenge had the most submissions in recent challenges, so I guess I vote black metal again. :)

I'll most likely put my name in also. Creativity has been dead on my part, and I could use a boost now that my PC is back.

Mine has been sorta stuffed up, I have I think 4 drum tracks to finish once they are completed for people the ideas usually start flowing. it's like mentally I put a block on stuff so I can finish up shit and then it turns back on like a faucet.

What does everyone think of a no rules, apart from being black metal? Or does anyone have any ideas about rules around it?

I will not submit unless I'm promised a participation medal.

No but seriously, I do think that something that makes it a fun challenge would land a lot of participants. Much like the lyrics swap, which is still my favorite challenge.

do it up. just a plain create an any style black metal song.

thing that annoyed me about the lyric swap was the person who got mine dropped out.
