As awesome as that Battleaxe cover is, in terms of content and straight up metal 'tude not to mention the over the top cheese we all love with our trad metal, I can comfortably say it's also pretty objectively goofy. If we weren't all metalheads here we'd probably think it looked fucking stupid.

It is definitely worse than Solid and Rev-Raptor and Mastercutor and Steelhammer. At least RR and SH managed to have good colour schemes and look kind of cool in that absurd heavy metal kind of way.

Yeah I have no problem with any of UDO's previous covers. An image of a drunk robot would've been better for Decadent.

If all that separates good cover art with bad cover art is the color scheme, I think all future album artwork is fucked. Realistically speaking, Rev-Raptor has a terrible color scheme. The green and yellow is super ridiculous and goofy. I mean, I love it, and it's great, but it's also ridiculously stupid. What next, Taking Over and Fire Down Under are other examples of great cover art?

Sleazy business dudes have been portrayed on the cover art in heavy metal since fucking forever. The U.D.O. logo is jewel-encrusted and the sleazy business dude has horns and gold shit all over. Somehow Decadent is still not "cool in that absurd heavy metal kind of way"? Please.

It's too 'bling bling' for classic sleazy business man. Needs more robotic fists.

I'm less bothered by the cover art than the nonsensical songtitles he still uses, to say nothing of the abundance of cliched "metal" phrases and single-worded titles. "King of Fake?" Udo's been at this long enough to where someone in his camp should have the responsibility and the wherewithal to tell him a phrase like that doesn't make much sense and comes off as amateur.

The first single from Steelhammer was called "Metal Machine". Ugh.

Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions

Their albums mostly have quite good artwork but this is truly uninspired

I have that album, the worst part is definitely the artwork, the music is pretty vicious black metal

I was listening to Znöwhite yesterday and it's a fucking solid album. Makes me wonder just what they were thinking with that cover.

It would be just another bland, uninspiring cover except for one minor oversight.

dreadmeat, do you have that Sunn O))) album? That white sheet with the band/album name on it is like a flap of tracing paper of the actual cover art, which is a pretty cool Richard Serra piece called Out-Of-Round-X. It's just a black void but it fits the music nicely.

Nah I don't have any of their stuff...
I have a Brighter Death Now CD that's similar

Here's one that gets mentioned a lot, and was dropped in a "Worst CGI cover art" thread a long while back. It isn't actually CG though, it is just a heavily filtered photograph. Not a bad album either, as well.

That first one is bland but not terrible. The others are just plain silly though.

The first one is silly because it's got such dainty eyelashes, yet the guy is terrified. NOT THE MASCARA, CTHULHU! ANYTHING BUT THE MASCARA!

Demon have them beaten on that first album:
Image
At first I thought it was at least meant to be Godzilla or something, but on review it doesn't look too different from Shrek.
And the second wouldn't be out of place for some obscure 80s thrash metal album or something I'd think, but yeah the other two look pretty wonky; the third looks straight from Geocities or something

I like that Prong cover actually. Nice colours, reminds me of space or the deep ocean or something, in a cheesy but genuine really old TV show prop kind of way.

BRAK METUR

The one that's always brought up in these kinds of threads is Maiden's Dance of Death. But really, the more you look at it, the more detestable it becomes. To me probably the biggest offense in metal artworks for a band on their kind of level. Anyone that knows anything about 3d model rendering will feel particular rage. The non-released version without the 3d models looks empty but is loads better than the real deal.

Never heard it? You should try it. Nice melodic death 'n roll.
It's no Heartwork or Necroticism but it's by no means bad imo.
I've got the pink vinyl version. Brilliant combination with the albumcover i think haha.
