This is the latest thing I've been craving, and I've love to know where to find more of it. My criteria is as follows:

  • Intrinsically unique sound: The band should have a sound all of their own. You should be able to hear a five-second section by the band and immediately be able to tell where it came from. This should come either from the styles of melody they use, the melodies juxtaposed with certain rhythms, the combination of textures used, or some other trait more distinguishable than "it sounds like Incantation but has 20% less bass frequencies and the album uses 11% fewer blast beats".
  • The flashier and less serious, the better: while I like bands like, say, Lugubrum who have indeed made a wholly distinct sound for themselves out of the ugly and grotesque side of extreme metal, I'm looking for something a bit more energetic and immediately cheery. There should be a sense of playfulness to the music, almost as if the musicians don't take themselves quite *too* seriously.
  • I'm not looking for "everything but the kitchen sink" bands: Weirdness is encouraged - really, I even like the last !T.O.O.H.! album, so hit me with whatever - and combining several genres is fine, but I want the music to have a cohesive vision. It shouldn't have to shift between five different styles every minute to achieve that. No Unexpect, or Sigh, or anything comparable to them.
  • Goofy clean vocals usually help.

So with that said, here are some bands whom I think sum up nicely what I'm looking for. Listen to each of these songs for like 30 seconds if you want to get a better idea:

Bands drawing from a pool of weird ideas to form flamboyant entertaining songs, without necessarily making a melting pot out of them in the process.

Thanks in advance.

Obvious recs but check out Mike Patton's stuff, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle or Fantomas.

Time for you to check out Circle, a very productive Finnish experimental rock/sometimes metal band. I'll link you songs here... He has several projects (some I reviewed here) and it's always awesome stuff. They have like 40 albums so it's tough to pinpoint some moments but here you go.

Edit: some more Circle!

Also, I know you're not really into prog rock but I'm sure that's because you haven't heard the right things!
This fits all your criterias:

Let me bring up a couple bands I recommended a few days ago:
Stolen Babies-Somewhat famous, you probably know these.
Supercar-Odd Japanese band that blended pretty much everything into alternative rock but mostly some forms of electronica. Check out more than one song by them as, for the most part, their songs sound very different from each other.
Pornophonique-8 bit and an acoustic guitar. 'Nuff said.

As for other bands: Schizoid Lloyd-I've yet to hear the whole album but as far as I've heard, it should fit.
Maybe Manimalism but it isn't particularly joyful...

Man, avantgarde is full of dark music, I can't think of anyone else that could fit.

IDK much in the metal realm that fits these criteria. Or possibly anything. But here's my stab at your request (a lot of this is probably just shitty, 2nd rate Cheap power pop Trickery to many, but whatever):

Sparks:

They have a very fun approach to lyrics. They manage to be very clever and funny for having very little of any severity to express. Distinctive, falsetto vocals and a diverse, ever-evolving approach to rock/pop music (you'd probably like their early 70's-early 80's material best). Plenty of upbeat, high-tempo songs.

The Soft Boys:

Youtube: show

Much like Sparks, the lyrics are witty, but never especially grave. A bit more snotty and attitudinal than Sparks, but definitely comparable. The nasally vocalist is pretty hard to confuse with anybody else.

Pavlov's Dog:

Great musicianship and a crazy-unique vocalist who sounds like a goat crossed with Geddy Lee on HRT. The downside is that they aren't really a "fun" band. Their songs are generally very emotional, but they have a lot of melodramatic flair.

T. Rex (late era):

I may always be a minority in thinking this, but I've recently been discovering the late-era T. Rex albums and I find them absolutely fantastic. The sound is certainly unique. Bolan's main bitch, Gloria Jones, provides the most hauntingly freaky, alien back-up vocals to many tracks on the albums Zinc Alloy..., Bolan's Zip Gun and Futuristic Dragon. They're all a fantastically weird, coked-out and crazy melding of early American rock, funk, disco and British glam. Bolan's voice and playing style are unmistakable.

is The Residents too obvious a suggestions? What about Nuit Noire? Maybe you'd like the 60's group, Monks, too.

^ Someone here sent me a rip of an EP released by the same Brainstorm some time ago. It's been a while since I last listened to those files, but it wasn't wholly dissimilar to this as I remember it.

If you like that band, OP, you might also like Italy's Trifixion.

At any rate, I liked Graal myself, so there's something.

check out all the awesome bands in this thread, whoa. xD

I feel like leaving my 5 cents:
Divina Enema - prog/avant garde metal with weird nasal vocals
Kuolleet Intiaanit is a strange Finnish band. They have some quite good stuff
Iji has quite an unique sound too.
I take it that you might already know Idiot Flesh? If not so, they were Sleepytime Gorilla Museum before they huh.. Turned into Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, except that more like rock rather than metal.
Damien Storm is often regarded as ridiculous but fits your criteria, I believe
Bubblegum Octopus isn't exactly metal or rock but other than that fits all the criteria.
The thrash metal band Tourniquet also has a quite unique style, imo. Plus they have those stupidly high pitched vocals back then. Perhaps you'll enjoy

That was more like 7 cents but heh...

Spot on, I really enjoy this dude's music, and this is probably his best track too.,

Not entirely rock nor metal, but it's present in Igorrr, if you can stand some breakcore, of course.

I reckon you're familiar with the Melvins and Butthole Surfers. And Tony has already mentioned Mr. Bungle and Faith No More, so I'm gonna leave you with a few Ween tracks.

The first three bands are all more math metal than anything, but have that super flamboyant irreverent tone your looking for:

Zehul is the perfect genre for this: it features lots of flashy, unique and technically impressive bands

the most quirky i can think of is Koenjihyakkei, it's pure goofy madness! I don't like them a lot
(i actually prefer the more "serious" bands like Eskaton, Dun, and Universal totem orchestra) but they seem to fit in the strange request, check them out!

Fuck, this is really epic post MutantClannfear. I regret finding this so late, but I still have some nice tips I guess

Corima
https://youtu.be/XZ2laHcUb7M
I dont really know many new bands playing zeuhl, but these guys are totally great and have their own distinct sound.

Altais
https://youtu.be/irm2rbzaLsA
Now this minialbum is an old and somehow hidden zeuhl gem

Bachikaburi
https://youtu.be/tOPYGOC9VhM
Since you like NSS (is Ogo Dys the same band? I love them) I include some hardcore punk based tips

Atila (international sandwich album)
https://youtu.be/BAZjHaIFHto
Very enjoyable and creative but unknown old album. it has that nice "I dont give a shit" feeling

I Refuse It!
https://youtu.be/I6gtP84xkOI
italian experimental/hardcore/art punk

Bubblemath
https://youtu.be/j2RC0yVec2Q
Maybe something in between Cardiacs and Mr.Bungle. Strangely, that SOAD song reminded me of this one.

F.P.B
https://youtu.be/86_c-yy9VT4
Pre-Uz Jsme Doma band (band from country I am from which I like quite a bit), more raw and punk, less sophisticated, but not bad.

let me know if you (or anyone else) liked some of these
