Every now and then, I always enjoy watching a good metal documentary. (I think most people here are pretty familiar with Sam Dunn's stuff.) Anyone have a good one to share?

I really like this Belgian black metal documentary from 1998. What's really cool about it is that it's not a typical, objective documentary that tries to interview every pioneer band. Instead, it just passively films the on-goings at a show and gets a great inside perspective of the local black metal scene. (There's not a trace of one where I live, so it's an awesome sight for me.) Only problem is that half of it's not in English and there are no subtitles.

Well, are you looking for documentaries about metal in general or a specific genre, or do you mind being recommended documentaries about specific bands?

Anyways, I would highly recommend checking out the Cannibal Corpse documentary, "Centuries of Torment". It's a really in-depth 3 hour documentary that basically shows all other documentaries how you're supposed to cover the history of a band. Also, Metal Blade is cool enough that they have the whole thing uploaded on their own channel on Youtube, so you don't have to worry about digging through random channels to find the whole thing.

Another one I suggest checking out is Sodom - Lords of Depravity Part 1. This is another lengthy documentary (3 hours 15 minutes), which covers the band's history from their start to the mid 90s. Unfortunately, Part 2 (which covers from where Part 1 left off to 2009) isn't uploaded on Youtube, so Part 1's all you've got to work with for now. But still, that's 3 hours just for one half, so it's not like you're getting the bare minimum.

Thanks, I'll check those out.
It can be any of the three types you mentioned.

This documentary is a personal story told from the perspective of satellite engineer and vocalist Michael Dafferner, who is a member of an inknown "math-core" metal band called Car Bomb. In 2007, Michael ventures out on his first US tour and discovers that performing in an unknown band playing an unknown genre of music is not the ego boosting experience he was hoping for. The next year, Car bomb is offered a tour with the goth-punk groups Gorgeous Frankenstein and Bella Morte who offer the prospect of playing for large r gruoups of people. Several thousands of dollars in debt and dozens of wasted vacation days later, the band finishes its disappointing tour.

Death Metal Angola (Trailer)
International Award winning documentary directed by Jeremy Xido
International Award winning Death Metal Angola follows a loving Angolan couple, Sonia and Wilker, whose love for death metal music is bringing hope to the town and children of Huambo and Angola as a country. The devastating reality of Angola’s history of wars and civil unrest has left the country’s people torn, broken, and starving for something to give them peace. Sonia and Wilker’s dream to put on the first national rock festival ignites the emotions of the Angolan people, and helps them heal from the war-stricken path Angola has left behind. This engaging reality of Angola touches the heart of the viewer and sheds new light on a music genre that is not well understood.

Finland - Promised Land of Heavy Metal
A documentary about Finland, the only country where heavy metal has become mainstream. Starring Alice Cooper, Mr Lordi, and Ville Valo. Finland may as well be the ONLY country in the world in where Heavy Metal (and its subgenres) has became mainstream.

I hope you find this useful... Cheers!
EDIT: Fixed most of the links, added some more documentaries, so you have to take a closer look at the list. Enjoy!

Great posts guys. I've been wanting to watch some metal docs lately myself as well. Immense help there, with several interesting-seeming docs I've yet to see being namedropped.

Since two docs I was going to recommend have already been mentioned, I'm just going to add: THIS IS SPINAL TAP.
I think Last Days Here is worthy of a +1, though.

im sure most people here have already seen it, but I really liked "One Man Metal" with Xasthur, striborg, and leviathan.

I really liked hearing Connor and Whitehead's stories/thoughts behind their music. also seeing Menzies growling in the cave with that Halloween cape is a classic moment :-P

I second Death Metal - A documentary!!! Not for what it says about death metal, but for Peter Steele's ramblings that have nothing to do with anything the documentary is about. He's awesome as ever. RIP.

Eventhough it does't focus on the metal bands themselves, I'd also suggest watching 'The Beasts Of Satan' (aka 'Death Metal Murders') which is about a occult gang of Italian youngsters into extreme metal (somewhere in the 90s) getting doped up and luring in new young metal fans into their little club so they would eventually kill them as a sacrifice to Mr. Satan. Pretty disturbing.....

The two documentaries I absolutely recommend are One Man Metal and Anvil: The Story of Anvil. Both are available on Youtube.

One Man Metal changed the way I view depressive black metal, especially Xasthur. Despite being a fan of the genre, like many of its haters I was under the impression that the musicians were the "emos" of black metal: pretending to be sad just to be kvlt. But OMM helped reassured me that it’s genuine, at least in part.

The Story of Anvil, too, can change your perceptions. Think old bands that are still around are just milking nostalgia for money, and don't really love the music? Think again. I was disappointed to find out that some of the story is fake, but it’s a worthwhile watch anyway.

Other than these two, I recommend Iron Maiden: The Early Days if you're a fan of the band, and Satan Rir Media though it doesn't really focus on the music. Don't bother with the other popular black metal documentaries unless you have nothing better to do.

This is the first one that came to my mind. Morbidly fascinating to see someone fall so incredibly far, to the point of paranoid delusions and incoherence. Mother fucker rose from the ashes like a decrepit mummified phoenix. An encouraging story of redemption. Really a good watch.

But OMM helped reassured me that it’s genuine, at least in part.

Changed my mind on a lot of my perceptions of that type of black metal as well after going through an extended bout of suicidal ideation myself. It's a lot different from whatever preconceptions people have of it. What didn't change is that I still think the music, lyrics, imagery, etc. suck.

I liked the Dismember - Death Metal And More Mental Illness docu. Not very informative if you want to know about the scene but I thought it was fun to watch. Nice, if you like the band.

March of the Gods is a documentary about the metal scene in Botswana. Very recommendable. At least a bunch of trailers are in YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/MarchOfTheGods/videos

Chimaira: The Dehumanizing Process
I've never been a fan of these guys, always found their music quite stale, but this documentary is really top notch and entertaining and really lets you into the real world of being in a band and recording and dealing with members quitting and wha tnot.

Im just a few minutes into "Dancing with the Devil" and it seems to be about Brazil and drugs/crime....is that right?

What are the best docs that focus more on the fucked up people in metal and less on the music like Last Days Here/Pure Fucking Mayhem/One Man Metal/etc.?

RE: Such Hawks Such Hounds

I honestly wouldn't recommend it myself... The only parts that I found memorable or even really worthwhile were the interview portions with Wino, and this was in part because they were sort of unintentionally(?) funny.

That's just my dumb impression of it, though, so don't take my word for it. I've always been more into classic doom stuff, and the film seems to focus more on contemporary stoner bands who do almost nothing for me.

I guess "The Decline of Western Civilization" docs (both, really, even though the first is about punk bands) would be good (too obvious?) suggestions.

That was pretty cool. I had no idea there were scenes where everyone put so much effort into dressing up and even fans wore corpse paint. I wonder if that was a 90s thing or just that particular scene.

you can see that this was filmed just after the commercial peak of black metal. You can also see the people who seem to be more in touch with the actual origins of black metal as they are older and wear different jackets/shirts etc. Funny to see so many people in cradle of filth shirts too.

Heavy Metal Gangs of Wadeye is pretty fascinating. It's about black aborigines gangs in Australia who live their lives in gangs based upon love for metal bands. There's the Iron Maiden gang, Slayer gang, and even the Evanescence gang. And many more.

Why You Do This
This documentary is a personal story told from the perspective of satellite engineer and vocalist Michael Dafferner, who is a member of an unknown "math-core" metal band called Car Bomb.
Finally, in 2009, Car Bomb is offered a tour with the well known and respected bands Gojira and The Chariot. During this tour Michael learns what it would be like to live out his dream and the costs associated with making that dream come true.
Includes interviews with Lamb of God, Gojira, Richard Christy and many more.

This one was great. Technically it's a bit shaky, but the guy is genuinely interested in why people (and himself) play in bands that hardly anyone wants to listen to, and he gets really good comments from the people he interviews.

Since reading Tezcat's post I can't help but think of a database with the following fields:

.imdb_id
.youtube_id
.title NOT NULL
.year
.abstract
.director
.country

The youtube_id would need to be constantly updated.

It would be a great database to have online.

Watched this one last night and it is some fascinating stuff. Heavy metal dance-offs need to be a thing.

I watched a good documentary on Kreator and a relatively decent one on Destruction a couple of years back. They both spoke about the history and the discography in general, and they were pretty insightful, although, I found the Destruction one to be a little rushed. I just tried to find them on YouTube, but alas I can no longer find them. They were around 40 something minutes long a piece, and are worth tracking down. I was going to watch one about Sodom, but the first part itself was around four hours long, so I can see that being a bit of a drag.

Edit:
I found the Kreator documentary but I was wrong, it's over an hour. I am unable to find the one on Destruction, though.

Edit 2: I just noticed that in the recommendations was a Napalm Death documentary that one spoke of the recording process behind Scum which was pretty fucking good. I seem to remember the major surprise was that the album did not take long at all to record (both parts). There was a good Ackercocke one I saw, too, which injecting some good humour into it but I haven't really heard the band's material.

It's a punk rock docu, but "Another State of Mind" is amazing. It's about a disastrous tour Social Distortion tried to run in 1982. If you listen to Social D's later stuff and hear Mike going on about how he fucked up and he's lucky to be alive, that movie will explain it all to you. Ness is as much of a survivor as Mustaine, maybe more so.
