Let's keep all of the conversation concerning this in one thread, lest we semi-derail the other gaming threads and the FFA. Like many of us, video game music got me into metal long before I even knew what Metallica or Slayer were. I would say the two games that had the most profound impact on me earlier on were Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest and Megaman X. I played both of those before I was 10 and I used to leave the game on just playing the stage or battle music.

Share whatever you like here, although I expect more of a lean towards retro gaming as opposed to the newer games. It doesn't seem like game music is as important a facet to developers or fans anymore. That is a shame, IMO.

Important rule

If sharing from Youtube, please post LINKS and not Youtube embeds. Due to the nature of this thread, having many embedded Youtube videos will make browsers lag horribly (and sometimes crash) and render the thread unusable rapidly.

Been digging this remix a lot lately.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odfCTFPyZCo

The original MOD tracker format is among my top favorite stuff for VGM by far. Unreal and Deus Ex!

I also really dig the redbook audio era of 90's PC/CD based game music. This and the MOD format I wish lasted longer.

(Spencer Nilsen also did the American Sonic CD OST, which I love).

[I'm a big fan of video game OSTs.

The first ones that immediately come to my mind are from Capcom games. Mainly Mega Man 1-6 and the Street Fighter 2 and Alpha series.

Here's a few tunes I love:

Mega Man 2 - Wily Stage 1-2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4VtxWRfPOk

Who doesn't love this classic? I still remember the first time hearing it as a kid and just being in awe.

Hyrule Castle - A Link to the Past

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuN9Y7MNJW8

Now here's some Koji Kondo goodness. As most of you know, A Link to the Past is a classic game. Arguably one of the best, if not the best Zelda game of all time. Hyrule Castle is a powerful tune that really fits the castle and royal authority. It's also one of those tunes that, when you hear it for the first time, you know you're in for an amazing game.

Star Fox - Corneria

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsOEGPLa1Z4

The original Star Fox game had a kickass OST that made it feel like a space opera. It's like I'm listening to classical music in 16-bit format. Really fits the game.

Guys, if you don't mind, please spoiler all Youtube links, because this page is certain to get a lot of them. It still tries to load the video even with it minimized, and it really bogs down slower computers and laptops. [Morri's edit: actually, let's all switch to links, spoiler tags don't help much. See my post below and the edit in the OP]

Concerning tracker music, Alexander Brandon is my favorite by far. I don't know if this guy has a track I dislike, even some of the little one-off tunes he composed around 1995 before he was ever hired by Epic Games. There is a bunch of obscure stuff floating around on youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8R5y5Gyn54

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syXry_jPAXk

RE Megaman: I actually like the soundtracks to Megaman 3-5 better than the first two. Was never that big of a fan of 2's soundtrack. 5 has the best wily stage themes.

Oh sweet topic. Yeah it goes without saying I love video game music, enough to try to make a career out of it if things go my way. I love it all, really. It would be quicker to talk about soundtracks that I don't like than to list the ones that I do.

So here's a few youtube links to some of my most favorite single tracks from various games.

I prefer VGM to metal in the end, honestly. Always have and always will.

Time Trax is nutty, Tim Follin is insane haha. Great picks rexxz. Unreal has been in my usual rotation forever now, I never tire of it.

Star Fox was greatness. Nothing else really sounds like it, except for Vortex perhaps - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSlhQga8XWA

The Dark World theme from LTTP is still my all time favorite Zelda overworld theme. I think a lot of Zelda II's music goes unappreciated though:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7TMJafmV3E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzpXsw8b4Is

Since some of you like Megaman a lot, did you ever beat the Zero series? The final boss fight in Zero 4, sounded like an insane Final Fantasy boss, it was incredible:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6KadlV4I1Q

Speaking of something similar... the final boss theme in Shovel Knight, almost had to drop the controller. I thought it was the second coming of Zeromus.

I love game music. Well, I used to. I find few modern OSTs to be that compelling these days, compared to the 5th gen or so (PS1/Saturn/N64/mid-to-late-'90s PC era).

Speaking of which, right now on NeoGAF, there's a voting thread for the best OSTs of that particular generation (a few months ago there was one for gen 6 as well, aka PS2/Xbox/Gamecube/early 2000's PC). I'll just repost my whole thing, because why not... :) It's probably the best generation of game soundtracks for me; production values got better than in the 16-bit era, but not everything was suddenly bland "Hollywood orchestral" shite and there was tons of creativity going on. Youtube embeds are not supported on GAF so they're all links, but at least that won't crash your browser... xD

-----------

1. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) ; Michiru Yamane

IMO the greatest video game soundtrack of all-time. Contains a great variety of tracks, from poppy hooks to blazing metal to somber baroque to eerie ambient, all whilst still retaining that "Castlevania feel". Michiru Yamane is a goddess. <3

Dracula's Castle
Festival of Servants
Wood Carving Partita
Abandoned Pit
Dance of Pearls

2. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1) ; Masaharu Iwata & Hitoshi Sakimoto

I rented this game and heard "Backborn Story" (one of the intro movies after idle title screen), and I was immediately sold on the game. Glorious and epic from beginning to end.

Trisection
Battle on the Bridge
Unavoidable Battle
Desert Land

3. Panzer Dragoon (Saturn) ; Yoshitaka Azuma (RIP)

My first exposure to the 5th gen was through this game. My jaw dropped when I heard the title screen music. I had never heard fully orchestral music with real instruments in a game before, so this was quite the leap. The whole OST is a mix of real orchestral, "fake" (synth) orchestral (still sounds great!), and electronica. My random Googling of the composer just now revealed that he passed away in 2012. :( I had no idea, very sad to hear.

Main Title
Opening Theme
The Imperial District Goes Up in Flame
Staff Roll

4. Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (PS1) ; Steve Henifin

My second PS1 game, my brother and I rented it and immediately got hooked despite having no memory card to save (bought it + a memory card a few weeks later). The soundtrack just oozed atmosphere. Some tracks are pretty much like melodic/atmospheric black metal without the metal, haha. Too bad there's no CD of it that I know of, 'cause I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

On the Road to Vengeance
Nupraptor's Theme
Avernus Cathedral
Awakening to the World

5. Wild ARMs (PS1) ; Michiko Naruke

Classic JRPG music but with an Ennio Morricone-style western tinge! So good. One track is actually pretty much a direct cover of Ecstasy of Gold, but why would anyone have a problem with that? Also, the intro theme is legendary for a reason.
Note: the original OST CD is garbage, with less than half of the game's total music. If you ever want to buy the CD version make sure you get the later re-release titled "Complete Tracks".

To the End of the Wilderness (dat Anime intro!)
Migrant Bird of the Wilderness (Ecstasy of Gold!)
Warrior's Whistle (Boomerang's theme)
Oops... (aka "Wh-What?", or Zed's Theme)
After the Chaos and Destruction

6. Soul Blade (PS1) ; Takayuki Aihara

Epic and glorious, yes. I always picked the "arranged" version in the options, since they sound so much nicer.

The Winds and the Clouds (Mitsurugi)
The Gears of Madness (Voldo)
Kkaduri (Seung Mina)
Future Dancin' (Taki)
Bravely Folk Song (Cervantes, also my favourite)

7. Xenogears (PS1) ; Yasunori Mitsuda

Mitsuda's best work IMO, surpassing even Chrono Trigger.
Fun fact: Dazil's theme sounds very, very similar to the Loreena McKennitt song Marco Polo. Pure coincidence as the Loreena McKennitt album came out the same year as Xenogears did in Japan.

Light from the Netherworld (FMV intro)
Dazil, City of Burning Sands
Awakening
The One Who Is Torn Apart (my favourite)

7. Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn) ; Saori Kobayashi, Mariko Nanba

For Saga and Orta, this duo just slayed it. I'm just gonna re-write what I wrote for the Orta soundtrack in the 6th gen voting thread since it also applies to the Saga OST:
So epic, unique and fresh. It really fits the vaguely apocalyptic sci-fi/fantasy setting the games are known for, with a lovely Eastern folk tinge mixed with a more "futuristic" electronic sound. The credits song, with the vocals sung in the invented Panzer language, is absolutely stunning (first link above).

Sona Mi Areru Ec Sancitu
The Black Fleet
Pure Blood Seed (battle theme)
Rest (firecamp theme.... most soothing music ever? I can feel its warmth!)

9. Suikoden (PS1) ; Miki Higashino, TAPPY

Suikoden II's soundtrack is probably more well-known, but I always felt that the original game had even better music. Hard to pick though, they're both so good.

Forgotten Days
Distant Mountain
Black Forest (only heard in the very first dungeon and never again... criminal!)
Theme of the Advancing Army

10. Astal (Saturn) ; Tatsuyuki Maeda, Tatsuya Kousaki

This is like prog rock, except actually good. xD Very epic and atmospheric for a platformer, with an occasional touch of Pink Floyd influence that I really like.

The Adventure Begins
Into the Darkness
Sea of Clouds
The Evil Eye

----------------------

Honourable mentions (so many of them! some of them were heartbreaking to leave off the top 10...):

x. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (PS1) ; Kurt Harland

Not quite as amazing as Blood Omen, and the electronic darkwave style is an odd choice for a dark fantasy game, but it works surprisingly well. Plus, another legendary intro! And I like how the music evolved on the fly whenever there was combat and resumed its more normal pacing after you killed the enemies, without any odd or jarring transition. The music also changed slightly whenever you entered the spectral realm, with more weird reverb and bass to make it sound more... spectral, I guess.
Fun fact: Ozar Midrashim was actually a 1993 composition that appeared on Information Society (Kurt Harland's former synth pop (later darkwave industrial) band!)'s album, "Don't Be Afraid".

Ozar Midrashim (aka FMV intro)
Drowned Abbey, (danger), (combat)
The Citadel (combat)
Credits

x. Panzer Dragoon Zwei (Saturn) ; Yayoi Wachi, Junko Shiratsu, Tomonori Sawada, Teruhiko Nakagawa

It's really as deserving as the original game and Saga, but I just had to make hard choices. :(

Prologue (Omen)
Intro (Legend of Light)
Episode 2 (The Empire), Part B Route 1
Episode 3 Boss (Hanuman)

x. Final Fantasy VII (PS1) ; Nobuo Uematsu

Don't think I need to say anything about this one...

Opening Theme - Bombing Mission
Mako Reactor
Still More Fighting
J-E-N-O-V-A

x. Alundra (PS1) ; Kōhei Tanaka

Axelstream (a GAF poster) wrote a lot about it in the GAF thread, so I'll just add a couple of great tracks he didn't mention:

Ra's Underground Hideout
The Child's Dream (probably my favourite along with The House of Taran)
The Black Angel Comes Forth

x. NiGHTS into Dreams... (Saturn) ; Naofumi Hataya, Tomoko Sasaki, Fumie Kumatani

Impossibly fun and memorable. Normally I don't care for jazzy proggy stuff but somehow they make it all work.

The Dragon Gave a Loud Scream
She Had Long Ears
Suburban Museum
NiGHTS and Reala (metal!)

x. Skullmonkeys (PS1) ; Terry Taylor

Funniest OST ever? Funniest OST ever.

Be bop bo! (Main Theme)
Science Center II
Lil Bonus Room (try not to laugh... I dare you)

x. Metal Gear Solid (PS1) ; TAPPY, Rika Muranaka, et al.

Worthy a mention if only for the amazing credits song, The Best is Yet to Come. Reminds me of Loreena McKennit quite a bit, which is a good thing.

x. Shining Force III (Saturn) ; Motoi Sakuraba

Motoi Sakuraba can do no wrong, I think.

The Legend Begins
Flying Dragon on the Battlefield
Flowing River, Light of the Moon

x. Genso Suikogaiden vol. 1 and vol. 2 (PS1, import only) ; Miki Higashino, Keiko Fukami

I actually imported both volumes of the soundtracks despite having never played the games. They are remixed and remastered versions of select Suikoden II tracks, and they sound absolutely divine. So I list these instead of Suikoden II because they just sound better than the original game...

Withered Earth (opening), orchestral version (both are glorious!)
The Chase
Gothic Neclord
Children Playing in the Field

x. Shadow Madness (PS1) ; Brad Spear

While it got a mediocre reception I thought it was actually a decent game, it just had kind of shitty art direction for the character design. I never finished it, though I own it. It had really cool music (and a whole bunch of different battle themes, which was rare at the time):

Battle Theme 1
Battle Theme 2
World Map - Homelands
Battle 3 - Homalands
Karillion - Oldetown parts I, II and III
Karillion - Middletown I & II

x. Guardian Heroes (Saturn): Katsuhiko Suzuki Norio Hanzawa

Fun rocking soundtrack for a fun rocking beat-em-up.

The Sword
Rough and Ready
Fighters of Pain

x. Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge (Saturn) ; Takayuki Iwai, Hideki Okugawa

Catchy Capcom fighting game music. Lord Raptor! \m/

Lord Raptor
Anakaris
Demitri

x. Legend of Oasis ; Not quite as memorable as Beyond Oasis, weirdly enough, but still a solid effort from Yuzo Koshiro.

Samples are sadly impossible to find on Youtube, apparently. O_o

x. Earthworm Jim 2 (PS1 and Saturn) ; Tommy Tallarico

Second funniest OST ever? Probably.

Anything but Tangerines!
Granny Chair Bonus
Puppy Love (ok, cheating since this a classical song but... xD)
Udderly Abducted

x. Rayman (PS1 and Saturn and Jaguar) ; Rémi Gazel

Not quite as awesome as the later Origins/Legends games, but still, beautiful atmospheric stuff.

Deep Forest
Flight of the Mosquito + Hold On Tight!
Moskito's Rage
Fear of Heights + Blazing Brass

The Genesis sound rules when composers knew how to use it. I would say my two all time favorite soundtracks on the system are by far Shinobi III and Thunder Force IV. I don't think it gets more metal and awesome than Thunder Force, puts up a good fight against Megaman. Notice how long and dynamic the He Runs track is for Shinobi, so damn awesome. Also safe to say Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakimoto knew what they were doing with this chip, Gauntlet 4 has an incredible OST:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTQIiIKummw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Vw2d3_aEC8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98qL68gpS7Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADC0G_7CsYw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0-mkukUH5k
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmzdUd1jgSI
My favorite Hitoshi Sakimoto OST goes to Vagrant Story:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtasuW1AKJ4

Castlevania could have a topic to itself, pretty much a higher beings work from the beginning to not-Lords of Shadow.

The Symphony of the Night composer began with Bloodlines, and this is by far my favorite. Very ethereal, just so damn cool. The whole OST is insane though, wish she did more on the Genesis:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKJsfwHObvw

Clockwork Mansion is one of my all time favorites:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQRMjAg2jN0 - Castlevania 4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPdX9c02sC8 - Circle of the Moon version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueIof4otLKw - Cool Genesis remix

Rondo of Blood retained the bumpin' melody that the older titles are known for:

Ninja Gaiden on the NES has a ton of great music. One of my favs is the intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhFTBiQhJeA#t=13s Really epic piece, and about 55 seconds in, in comes a Maiden-like gallop on the bass!

On the whole Ninja Gaiden II's music was far less memorable to me, that is except the intro. Holy shit, this intro is epic for the 8 bit era! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN_r51d-oL0#t=12s

Here's a cool metal cover medley of Ninja Gaiden tunes. Even includes the use of a Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time ocarina! If you browse through his videos he does a lot of other metal video game covers too.

Please stop using Youtube embeds, everyone. Even with spoiler tags, the thread is already becoming too laggy and that's only 10 posts in!

Use normal links instead. I have edited every post for that. Sorry for those who lost the song labelling due to that, but it's for the best.

I have edited the OP to make sure everyone understands this.

NeoTokyo is just a Source cyberpunk tactical FPS that started as a mod. It's enjoyable, and it's inspired by Ghost in the Shell, but it didn't get much far. Now, just listen to that soundtrack. For IDM and ambient techno lovers!

My favourite tracks:
Scrap I/O: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5byxSgCDDo
Tin Soldiers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPUp2PiCYBY
The full album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=408tWOubRDM

It's a two and a half hour long 2 CD album (mind you not all of it was actually in the game). Edward Harrison (0edit) delivered one of the best albums of 2009.

(no one mentioned Mark Morgan's Fallout soundtrack yet?)

Indeed. Would be nice if they had him do Fallout 4, but I assume we would have heard that by now if they brought him back.

New Vegas recycled some of the classic tracks which was nice. For Fallout 3 I just straight up used mods to replace the entire BGM with the classic tunes, and it made the game 10x better.

The remastered soundtracks are officially free to download:

As much as I love the soundtracks to Xenogears, Xenosaga, and Chrono Trigger, I've always felt that Yasunori Mitsuda's best work was in Chrono Cross--a mediocre RPG with one of the best soundtracks ever written.

Time's Scar
Arni Village (Another World)
Leaving the Body
Guldove (Another World)
Dream Fragments
Start of the Dream
Dimensional Breach
Chronomantique
Island of the Dead
Ruined Tower
Those Imprisoned By Fate
Magical Dreamers
FATE
Dragon God
Life ~A Faraway Promise~
Les Tresor Interdit

And I could just go on and on. So goddamn beautiful.

Chrono Cross has an decent soundtrack but it definitely doesn't beat CT for my money! I love all of his work though.

One of the absolute best video game soundtracks I've ever heard is Jeremy Soule's score for Total Annihilation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljDyp__ejco Pure orchestral epicness coupled with some darker, moodier stuff that really conveys the bombast and desolation of the millennia-long galactic war. Great game too, nostalgia rising.

Speaking of great games with great soundtracks, let's have some already mentioned, but not linked Deus Ex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHQZNNajxOk

And although I've never played it, I always thought MDK had a cool theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWUbCGeCleo

EDIT: k, let's drop some more while we're at it.

- Planescape: Torment <3 I should replay it one of these days... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixv_jRI6VqY

- Baldur's Gate 2 (and the expansion):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB7T6Kd9cYg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U88zyFLzIXQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcHnqodZoJM

- The amazing and immersive Homeworld had an equally immersive score: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqWcm6MMiHk Vangelis vibes. Though works vastly better when you're actually playing in the vast 3D vacuum with those gorgeous space textures all around you, I suppose. And let's not forget the Yes song written specifically for the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJkoBNOPvjU

- Anyone remember Interstate '76? That one had one perfectly funky soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayO7P3- ... iHA1CtzjLc Hey Stampede, how about a poem?

Some great choices here, esp. by Morrigan (Panzer Dragoon!!!!). I am a nostalgic guy by heart and many of the music of my fave games back then (mid 80s to early 90s) is still both stuck in my head and played constantly even nowadays. Depending on mood I listen to the original tunes as well as remixes, hell - I even like some remixes even more than the original, I have to admit ;)

Here are just a few quick links to same very few of the tons of faves (all original, no remixes atm)

X-Out Intro + Title (love this marching, glorious vibe)

Last Ninja 2 Central Park

Always loved the sound of the Super games too, nothing quite like them:

The dark ones from 2 sound like they'd be awesome in Metroid:

Just straight up one of the coolest SNES tracks ever in my book, some DKC Aquatic Ambiance right here:

Super Turrican for the NES is one of those cases where I believe the creator, Manfred Trenz, did everything. The sprites, coding, and even the music. So this installment has a really different sound, but wow it's cool as hell and pretty damn metal.

I've always had a thing for the music to Sonic the Hedgehog 1 on Master System. I mean listen to this:

Magical Dreamers
FATE

And I could just go on and on. So goddamn beautiful.

Eh, I don't know if your track selection just sucks or what, but most of those are immensely boring to me. I adore the first one, and maybe one or two others in this list are pretty good, but I was miffed that even the classic CT theme managed to sound so lame.

Mitsuda is generally amazing and I love his work in CT and Xenogears, but either CC's OST is as mediocre as the game, or you picked the worst examples. :P Hell how does a song called "Dimensional Breach", which sounds ominous and exciting, be so coma-inducing?

Edit: I guess that came across as harsher than I intended. I'm just baffled by how overrated this game continues to be.

I really fucking hate Soundcloud though. It always auto-starts some random artist's track after playing a track. WTF.

My favorites of Chrono Cross:
Earth Dragon Isle
Shadows End Forest

I'm a fan of Cross and I wouldn't change anything about it, the sound quality itself is absurdidly good, but it kind of loses that game-like vibe to me in ways I can't describe. I like the music to Xenogears and Trigger way more. Apparently Uematsu worked on Trigger with Mitsuda, but I feel like Mitsuda's signature comes out stronger on it and always figured he did most of the work.

I'm not sure what happend with Mitsuda and Xenosaga. I replayed the game a few years back, and there is practically no dungeon in the entire game that has BGM. They're literally just silent. The game also has TWO battle themes in the entire thing, one battle theme that it used for every single battle and boss, up until the final boss theme. My theory is that Mitsuda had one month to work on this project, otherwise it makes no sense. It should and could have been so much better with his skill, already proven with the Chrono games and Xenogears. The lack of dungeon BGM makes me very suspicious that it was out of his power.

The final boss theme definitely kicks ass though and is classic Xeno material.

Xenoblade was the best Xeno OST since Xenogears by far. The ACE+ tracks... holy FUCK.

Yeah, Xenosaga definitely had the problem that its soundtrack consisted of maybe, maybe, 5 tracks, but they were all good as far as I'm concerned.

Liked these as well. The X-Out is pretty cool and Last Ninja 2 is weird but in a good way, reminds me of Road Rash on the Genesis for some reason.

oh! awesome.

some of my favorite stuff comes from the 16 bit era, because I love midi compositions and synth noises. I especially like it when the idea is to convey dread or fear with such simple tools.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfFbgMklJGM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOmlX3Igy9k

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTxbs3nVDik

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDGQ8NXc8YE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l2vCIvIXrQ

Hmm...as far as more modern stuff goes, I've always had a soft spot for Tiberian Sun especially "Mutants" - that's just a rad mid-90s PC track, and "Valves" because of that pulsing synth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACQwFQYD4sI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-H4hwmM1qk

Obviously, the FF series is rad, but I think IX's is my favorite because it was the first time I played a game that moved me so much as a child - mainly because I was old enough to understand the story. Freija's theme, and anything really associated with her, is really rad. Kuja's music is over the top, but I'm a sucker for rocking organs....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMygElvVDWw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG5ytxBy0mA

Of course, honorable mention to Metroid Prime's OST - you can pick any track, but I'll go with fan favorite:

Oh man, Tiberian Sun had a great soundtrack. My friend bought the collector's box for the game back in 2001 and gave me the free soundtrack that came with - I used to play that on my clunky old stereo system all the time in 5th grade. Pharotek (which you only hear when playing Nod) is great too:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dH2IwmSvdU

On the newer side of things, I absolutely love the Mass Effect 2 soundtrack. I know some balked that the 80s sci-fi vibe of the first game's soundtrack was toned down in favor of a more cinematic/orchestral sound, but a lot of the tracks weave the two together quite well IMO:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rGQqBNZSAs

And of course, the amazingly climactic and triumphant suicide mission theme. Goddamn, I love the combination of drum corp-esque lines and those choirs at the end:

Awesome stuff, the Terranigma OST is amazing and has quite a strong depressive vibe, fitting considering its content. I've always liked this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnBBD3uqM0A

Always thought the menu theme was one of the best ever:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiWtFeMOvO0

I really wish Jeremy Soule did more on the SNES. Secret of Evermore had a godly OST:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIwDKEi5mk8

Kudos to Total Annihilation mentioned earlier. I read he's a big fan of John Williams and it really shows with this score. I think Soule could pull of Star Wars pretty well, honestly.

You buttfaces didn't tell me about this thread? >:(

ANYWAY, I got some good ones for you:

- For some reason, I've always been big on Turok: Dinosaur Hunter's OST. Stuff like this basically tells you "This land does not fuck around and will not hesitate to eat you alive and shit you out in fragments". Pretty much any of the last couple level themes are awesomely atmospheric like this though.

- Daisuke Ishiwatari. Too much shit to mention but Bloodstained Lineage was always a favorite. Not quite his but in the Korean version (OST by N.EX.T.), Testament still has one of the best themes.

- The SNES era, fuck me were some of the OSTs golden from then. Some favorites from then include Castle Theme (Super Mario World, Death Mountain (A Link to the Past) as well as Dark Dungeon, Fire Field (F-Zero), Fear Factory (Donkey Kong Country), and Boss Theme (Final Fantasy 4). I'm not going to hark on the "good ol'e days" but I do miss OSTs like this.

- N64 though, yeah that one had some great ones too. Things like Ganon's Tower (Ocarina of Time), Bowser's Castle (Mario Kart 64), Grotto Gulch (Clayfighter 63 1/3), Wizpig (Diddy Kong Racing), Facility (Goldeneye), Area 51: Escape (Perfect Dark), and Final Boss (Super Mario 64)

- Special mention to F-Zero X, which Fall Down To the Scream (Sand Ocean), The Long Distance of Murder (Red Canyon), and Devil's Call in Your Heart (Devil's Forest) were the first metal songs I really liked, back in 2001. I wouldn't actually get into metal until 2003 though.

I think that's probably the longest post I've ever made on this site, damn.

Speaking of evil sounding Zelda music, I always thought the regular dungeon music from Zelda 1 (Levels 1-8) as well as the music from Level 9 sounded pretty evil. Here's a link to the game's full soundtrack, in 6 and a half minutes! :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHIQTyBaGhw Despite being so short, it's one of my favorites on the NES.

I think someone above mentioned great short soundtracks, and another one of my favorites of those on the NES besides Zelda 1 is Castlevania II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuBSUppCTX0. Gotta love The Silence of Daylight, Bloody Tears, and Monster Dance! But all the songs are good, and the whole soundtrack is done in less than 8 minutes.

Here's something different... Did anyone want some doom metal in an 80s Nintendo game? Well Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde used some very Black Sabbath-y music in the title sequence for the first 15 seconds or so. :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHs9235UpOU&list=PL9FE0684BD5524507&index=10

Haha yeah there's probably a lot of NES OST's that are rather short, makes sense given the awesome simplicity of the games.

Sunsoft comes to mind:
Journey to Silius
Blaster Master
Batman

Final Fantasy 3 probably has one of the biggest NES OST's. Think it had like 40-50 tracks, the game in general must have been one phat cartridge. The game was made up of a vast ocean and floating continents, so it had a lot of cool water-esque level sounding tracks and awesome atmosphere:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saNNMsAlwbI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E61ozmHW8pI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9xyV-Rz5Jk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWhoTRLC0d4

I'd say Uematsu came into his own there, but perfected everything with FF4. I'd say this has my favorite FF boss theme and final dungeon theme. I like Zeromus' theme more than Kefka's too, it's like Liege Lord Master control vs Symphony X, I'm rarely in the mood for a 20 minute song with Kefka's battle theme.
Boss Battle
Final Dungeon - so epic, uplifting, and amazing. You can feel the journey is at its grand finale. Plus it's the coolest "crystallized" looking dungeon in the series too.

Absolutely. Wish there was more to it though. Still, what's there is done quite well.

Also I found out recently that there was an album of stuff from the Expansion Kit, but this particular song is rather peculiar:
Rendezvous With Ghost

Why? Well, it doesn't actually appear in-game, but it's on the official album as "Ghost Rider", but later included on the Koopa Loud Music album as "Rendezvous With Ghost". It's a pretty good song though (and possibly containing the only blast beat I've heard in VG music).

EDIT: Oh baby, 666 posts

I made a reference in my initial post, but I must stress again what a great soundtrack Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest has. For a game so maligned in the critical/gameplay arena, the OST goes a long way towards making the entire experience sufferable.

Maybe the following tunes will be a bit too old-schooled for some of your ears but, oh well... ;) So, here are a few more tracks from my Amiga 500 era. Still both games and music strike a lot inside me. Quite a few are taken from SHMUPs which always was my fave genre. Due to the nature (Amiga) of it one can really recognize the significant Amiga sound.

Let's start with the incredibly infectious XENON II theme for which the developers cooperated with Bomb The Bass and included their "Megablast" song in a stunning quality adaption:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w-tiRnac2k

Next one would be the theme for HYBRIS. Again stunning stuff, esp. when keeping in mind that only 512 Kilobyte (!) capacity could produce this together with all the game and graphic stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKltp-EWxxE

ALIEN BREED here is also a classic theme. Highly atmospheric but at the same time quite driving:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2CNQKOHdlM

The in game music from BLOOD MONEY has a quite gloomy atmosphere which is not the usual approach to SHMUP games, mesmerizing stuff:

Okay, most of these will probably be from fairly well-known games, but I'll try to pick mostly tracks that aren't as well-known or celebrated.

Talking Zelda series stuff - I think the Link's Awakening soundtrack might be slightly overlooked. Sword Search from the beginning of the game has a super going-on-a-quest, setting-out-on-cool-adventures feel to it. It was also the first Zelda title to include a different theme for every dungeon, like the creepy and awesome as hell music in Eagle's Tower (Level 7). My favorite, though, might be the Staff Roll, which is just so triumphant and uplifting.

Skipping ahead to the Oracle games, the sadness theme is far and away my favorite tune from either game and one of my favorite video game songs ever, it's just so wretched and miserable, gives me a distinct doom metal vibe. (Here's an awesome cover of it on guitar!) The Skull Dungeon music from Oracle of Ages was also super rad.

The Minish Cap's soundtrack wasn't quite up to par for the series, but it still brought a couple of gems like this. Oh, and I won't dwell long on Twilight Princess, but this track absolutely blew me away.

Onto Final Fantasy - I'll talk about IX for a second as well with this, so catchy and groovy and suck a cool rhythm, FUCK. This one also gets to me, usually the 'romantic' themes from FF are pretty shit, but this one is cool, the sadder vein running throughout helps it I think. Now to go to VI for a moment - I know the entire soundtrack is gold (probably my favorite from the FF series), but Another World of Beasts is so damn creepy and mystical, as is Land of Summons from FFIV. Finally, I know most folks don't care for XII, but I'm not here to talk about gameplay. I'm just going to leave this amazing cover of Eruyt Village here (the same guy who did the Oracles one).

No love for Yoshi's Island? Together with DKC it featured hands down the best vg music I got to hear as a kid. Those games must have left quite mark on my musical tastes. Also recently I was sitting in a café and the radio was playing some kind of Latin music, and I swear they were straight up ripping off the Flower Garden (IIRC) lead melody.

Edit: I swear I was just going to fix it. I've always been too rash with my posts but I compensate with obsessive editing.

I really love the music of Alberto Gonzalez. The Gameboy Turok soundtracks are some of the best round with its very strong melodies and beats. And basically all of his music is great.

Shadow of the Ninja by Iku Mizutani and Kouichi Yamanishi has a great soundtrack.

Iku Mizutani also did the soundtrack to Shatterhand with Kouichi Yamanishi.

Earthbound ranks among my favorite games as well as favorite soundtrack.

Some great music has been posted especially from Xenogears which also ranks among my favorites.

Does anyone listen to the Legacy Music Hour podcast? It's a fantastic resource of classic gaming music with some good interviews with composers throughout the series. Well worth the listen.

Do vocal themes (VGM with lyrics/singers) count? If so, then Adventure/Adventure 2-era Sonic vocal themes used to be a big thing for me. I wasn't into the series for the games so much as I was for the music.

Another one of my old faves: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Both Red/Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky had some awesome tracks...
