I used to listen to a fair amount of video game soundtrack songs a long long time ago. This goes back even before MP3 players were around, because I had one of those nifty tape recorders (from the Home Alone series) that I used to record songs from some of my favorite computer games of the time.

Let's start with Ultima 6. This game has music that brings such nostalgia and chills to me to this very day.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4YztEVXk7s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFqLdNqpMMU (Dungeon music) - this reminded me of a track from another game called Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, which I'll post later on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiGiiL3BOwI (Introduction) - this is the opening video of Ultima 6, but also contains one of my favorite songs from the series.

However, my favorite Ultima games are the two Ultima Underworld games.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8G0e8e ... 7C&index=4 One of my favorites from Ultima Underworld.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrvAfix ... F8A020F77C

Ultima Underworld II had better music, however. (Some of these sound different from the version I am used to, maybe it might be because of different MIDI drivers)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnxaY5I ... 7C&index=3 This still plays in my head when it is snowy out because of the Ice Caves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FciuCib ... 3484971A7C Talorus and Ethereal Void theme. Ethereal Void in particular is one of my favorite video game locations.

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure was one of the platformers I grew up with. I didn't have a Nintendo as a kid, just an Atari and a PC, but I preferred PC because of the far more interesting games. This was more or less my Mario. You may recognize the style as being from Bobby Prince, who also composed music for Commander Keen and Doom (among others).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npnjFF3FoME Level 1 music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnXNOZXZcI4 Plodding scary music that appears in Episode 2's first level, which is a labyrinth of bone and gore.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTW2vM5 ... lY&index=6 This song is what that dungeon song from Ultima 6 reminded me of as a kid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h0bAC6 ... ukZ4vN14lY Bobby Prince samples a well known song here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2fzl_s ... ukZ4vN14lY I distinctly remember recording this on my Talkboy.

I remember one of the songs I recorded on my Talkboy being from a stupid old first person shooter called H.U.R.L. which was basically Wolfenstein with soap instead of blood and you throw water balloons, soap and deodorant at enemies. The only place I can find it anywhere is at the very very end of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWTxS8I6jnI

Commander Keen has a lot of well known tracks in its OST, and is also one of the games I grew up playing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WUSIc7W0Hc You've Got To Eat Your Vegetables
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkNS-5Q ... 5E3442B762 Quantum Explosion Dynamo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MotBJpc ... 5E3442B762 Wednesday On The Beach

Jill Of The Jungle also had one of my favorite soundtracks - the atmospheric quality and intonation of some of the tunes is actually something I can find in heavy metal bands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pcxdYvp8uQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UZiKr2 ... 5K&index=7
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPuD3EX2_gM

Jumping to circa 1998 with the game Battlezone, this has some of my favorite songs, including a few that I put on my MP3 player when I first got an MP3 player (a Rio 600).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XEeoeuPXq8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pdH3v0 ... 57957EEC40

Battlezone - Red Odyssey brought more new songs, but my favorite was Track 8 (although it's listed as Track 7 here probably because Track 1 was not a music track)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCB0dvJaS9o

Battlezone II was a game I easily spent a couple thousand hours in. It's one of the first games I started playing with the audio silenced and my own music supplied, but the soundtrack isn't one I got tired of either.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QShdvIQJVDQ

Jumping to around 2010 and coming from a game I am still playing religiously (can anyone guess why? Might have something to do with something that will happen in precisely two months) - Fallout: New Vegas. The radio soundtrack is neat enough, but the ambient tracks are downright chilling at times.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bLZqK3 ... CC24457C43 The raid siren still gives me chills. This often plays in Freeside, a ruined urban area.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_dKcki ... CC24457C43 I associate this song with getting raped in the ass by Deathclaws in the middle of the Divide.

Elder Scrolls Online certainly has its moments, and while I haven't really been playing much of it lately whenever I tune in to the biweekly Twitch stream with the developers they will play some songs performed by Malukah before they start the show, and my favorite out of all of them is hands down this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwp8UxIY_iM

Some of these might be kinda quirky. They're also from games I've played fairly recently as opposed to favourites I might have had growing up.

Dungeons of Dredmor - Really gets you in the mood to die to some Diggles.
They Bleed Pixels - Really gets you in the mood to bleed some pixels.
Long Live the Queen - a short, elegant and sombre song that really sets the mood of the game and goes along great with the ending song.
Recettear - Catchy. I don't think I'll ever not have this stuck in my head. Capitalism, ho!
Space Funeral - Trippy. I hope I'll never have this stuck in my head. Eat your greens.
We Love Katamari - Really upbeat and fun. Has a lot of swing to it.
LISA - Best use of a Shenmue clip.
LISA: the Joyful - Best use of an air-horn.
Kentucky Route Zero - Really better to first listen to this within the context of the game.

Some great soundtracks on the N64 people rarely mention:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TCslzBeYOA (atmospheric and dense sounding, Turok 2's soundtrack is breathtaking)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmNijk3O1XI (this has been stuck in my head for 15 years)

For N64, some that come to mind are Castlevania 64 and Ocarina of Time.

Castlevania 64 - Stairway to the Clouds
Castlevania 64 - Intro
Ocarina of Time - Temple of Time

Oh man, Commander Keen. Humorously enough my fond memories of this game come not from childhood but from my friend - He grew up playing it and started a tradition in college of marathoning all six games over the first day or two of summer following exams. Thus most of my memories are mixed with that school-just-got-out excitement while hearing various Keen tracks as I hung out at my friend's house or cabin, usually with some variety of mind-altering substance in the mix. I really liked the Keen 4 tracks, especially the overworld and intro level music:

Turok 2 has ridiculously good music. More N64!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXqAbNqhZuk - Pilot Wings chillwave, perfect for just flying around

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVcukYLE1AU - Extreme G's fantastic cyber-future electro house.

I guess I'd say Goldeneye and Perfect Dark have the best N64 OST's to me. Not much else really comes to mind haha.

Love it or hate it, Sonic 3D Blast had amazing music on both the Genesis and Saturn. I loved how all those cross platform Sega games back in the day had varied soundtracks between the versions, along with any SNES releases of the same games as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfG09iLCKsM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MrP51YTWak
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn2YxjPxnuk

Hard to pick some Sonic favorites, but Sonic CD is the King for me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6XQbWqb6-s

Earthworm Jim was all over:
SNES - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGssb9O_ZyQ
Genesis - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7DZ5Utuq58 - think I prefer EWJ1 Genesis, and EWJ2 for SNES
CD versions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE8y3h3CnVI

I played that game all the time back in the day, but for some reason the music never stuck.

There's only a few old games where the music really stood out to me.

Jazz Jackrabbit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6L78lXPHro (particularly the first 2 tunes)

Blake Stone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TVl6XCBMf4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHvz_0xRq_g

Doom (1+2+Final) (In retrospect it probably had a big hand in shaping my taste in music)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSsfjHCFosw

Timesplitters 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v_Un1zncrM

These days I tend to immediately disable the music and play whatever I want to in the background.

On page 1 I posted my top 10 (+ honourable mentions) OST from the 5th generation of games (PSX/Saturn/N64/PC '94-99) from the NeoGAF poll.

So I guess I might as well post what I wrote down for my Top OSTs for gen 6 (PS2/Xbox/Gamecube/PC 2000-2005).

-----

1. Guilty Gear XX
Daisuke Ishiwatari
The Midnight Carnival
Writhe in Pain
Awe of She
Holy Orders (Be Just or Be Dead)
Blazingly awesome shredding speed metal in a game full of metal references? How can anyone not love this? The compositions are rock-solid (pun intended), full of personality and energy, and I'll never get tired of listening to this soundtrack. One of the finest OSTs ever made. Daisuke Ishiwatari sure is a multi-talented SOB.

2. Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
Michiru Yamane
Abandoned Castle
Baljhet Mountains
The Cave of Jigramunt
Young Nobleman of Sadness
Next best thing to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (which is the greatest OST of all time, it is known), this unfortunately mediocre game still has an amazing soundtrack featuring Michiru Yamane at her best. From the "classicvania"-styled upbeat rocking tunes to the epic baroque and orchestral pieces, the quality is strong all the way through and consistently fits perfectly the Castlevania aesthetic. Truly a game where the soundtrack overshadows the game itself by a light-year.

3. Wild ARMs: Alter Code F
Michiko Naruke
Warrior's Whistle
Murdering Princess
Filgaia
War Demon
The fantasy/western hybrid is back in full whistling glory! In this 3D remake of the PS1 classic, the OST also got a completely new version. In addition to new versions of the classic themes, it also featured a significant amount of new tracks. I was disappointed by some of the remade themes, as I often preferred their original version on the PS1, but some of them are actual improvements and the kick-ass new songs make up for it. "Murdering Princess" (linked above) is probably my favourite new track, and I could listen to War Demon all day...

4. Panzer Dragoon Orta
Saori Kobayashi, Yutaka Minobe
Anu Orta Veniya
Ancient Weapon
Gigantic Fleet
The Panzer Dragoon style of music found in Zwei and Saga (though the original game's OST is also amazing, its style was actually quite different) is so epic, unique and fresh, and Orta is no exception. It really fits the vaguely apocalyptic sci-fi/fantasy setting the games are known for, with a lovely Eastern folk tinge mixed with a more "futuristic" electronic sound. The closing song, with the vocals sung in the invented Panzer language, is absolutely stunning (first link above).

5. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Steve Henifin
Black Rose
The Gift of Forever
Gateway to Destiny
The Chosen
The Somme
It took me some time to fully appreciate the genius behind this OST. Steve Henifin composed the music for the original Legacy of Kain, which is one of my favourites, and ED's music is a lot more subtle and less "epic" and bombastic in scope, as the game demanded a soundtrack of a more sombre and ambient nature, but overtime I really got to appreciate how well-crafted it is. Eerie, moody and incredibly atmospheric, it not only suits the Lovecraftian tone of the game perfectly, but it gives me shivers even when listened to on its own. It gets better on every re-listen, even. Steve Henifin is really the underrated composer and deserves a lot more recognition.

6. Wild ARMs 3
Michiko Naruke
Advanced Wind
Migratory Birds / Wandering Bird Scoundrels
Gunmetal Action
Naruke does it again. Like the previous games, this OST is strongly inspired by Ennio Morricone's western style, featuring the iconic whistling along with more bombastic catchy tunes to go along the adventure.

7. Golden Sun
Motoi Sakuraba
Isaac's Theme (battle theme)
The Snow-Covered City
Sandy Deserts
Lalivero Ruins
Golden Sun's OST is the typical 16-bit RPG OST, which is actually a very good thing. Upbeat frenzied battle themes (Isaac's theme is just iconic now), lovely peaceful village themes, sombre and eerie dungeon themes, Sakuraba can do it all and more. His insanely long list of credited games is a testament to that, and somehow he still manages to produce quality output. Golden Sun remains one of his better OSTs, IMO.

8. Soul Calibur II
Junichi Nakatsuru, Yoshihito Yano, Asuka Sakai, Rio Hamamoto, Ryuichi Takada, Junichi Takagi
Under the Star of Destiny
Brave Sword Braver Soul
Chasing Death
Maze of the Blade
I'm probably one of the rare ones who prefer Soul Blade's OST (the arranged PS1 version) to Soul Calibur, but that doesn't make the Calibur soundtracks bad by any means. On the contrary, the Soul Calibur games retain much of the sweeping grandiose orchestrations. It was hard to limit myself to just one from the franchise, but I picked SC II because... I'm not entirely sure, really. xD

9. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2
Kurt Harland
Sarafan stronghold
Overland (battle)
Sarafan stronghold (battle)
While the dark ambient/darkwave style of Soul Reaver is generally more focused on mood and atmosphere rather than catchy ear worms, I still found myself humming some of those tracks as I played the game. Kurt Harland's style is quite unique and I really loved how the in-game music would change on the fly depending on the situation. For instance, the same song would suddenly quicken and become more frenzied during a battle, only to settle back into its calmer version after dispatching the enemies, completely seamlessly.

10. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Sotaro Tojima, Hiroshi Mitsuoka
Awake
Aquarius
The Sinking Old Sanctuary
What can I say? It's classic Castlevania music so of course it'll be good. Not quite as amazing as Yamane's output, but still chock full of ear worms and beautiful haunting pieces, and I dig their renditions of classicvania themes such as The Sinking Old Sanctuary (from Castlevania Bloodlines) and of course the iconic Vampire Killer.

Don't think either of these were mentioned yet, but they immediately come to mind for favorite video game music.

SYSTEM SHOCK 2 - I've heard complaints about the soundtrack for this game being distracting and "unfitting", but for me the atmospheric drum & bass tracks are the perfect background music for darting around on speed-hypos and wrenching the shit out of hybrid mutants. There's plenty of good darker electronic/ambient stuff going on as well, but these tracks stand out for me. It's a shame this never got an official CD release or anything.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtdQ5roMuEA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDUZlZMhbC8

RESIDENT EVIL 2 - In general, this is probably tied with DOOM (another game with a very notable soundtrack) as my favorite game of all time. The haunting ambient pieces are so perfectly placed, and as a kid playing it for the first time, they made certain areas (the fucking RPD basement) ten times more nerve-wracking than they were to begin with.

I don't play many new releases these days, but as of a few years ago I noticed that music doesn't seem to be a big focus with modern game devs. The only "recent" release I can think of with memorable music was Dark Souls.

SS2's music was amazing, totally agreed. This is probably my favorite:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVP9oLeqX0k

Same guy that did the amazing Thief soundtracks. Which are quite possibly the single -only- case of a videogame composer somehow merging droning atmospheric ambiance with melody into perfection. I really can't think of any game I've played with music that works quite like Thief. So many games that go for more ambiance/atmosphere (like a lot of stuff), the music ends up being too forgettable or falls too far back into the background. But the Thief soundtracks, were this constant, catchy, droning slush of atmosphere sinking you into its world.

I'll toss out some Deadly Shadows favorites for that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IfttUuCac0 - I'm pretty sure most of this level droned on with the part around 1:10... godly atmosphere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMivjfxiHnE - I'd often stop in these hub levels just to let the music drown me.

Doom is probably directly responsible for priming me as a kid to be receptive to metal later in my life. I don't think I would have ever liked metal if I never played Doom. Sure, most of it is stolen Metallica, Pantera, and Slayer riffs, but Bobby Prince had a way of boiling it down to its most immediately recognizable, accessible elements, which means everything when you're eight years old.

I didn't have consoles growing up, so these are all PC games:

Wing Commander (1990)
All those "cinematic" conventions in modern games? Wing Commander invented them. Forget designers, Wing Commander had a director (who is a total hack who owes his reputation to working with geniuses like Warren Spector on the first two games, but that's besides the point), it had cutscenes, it had characters having long shot/reverse-shot conversations, it had a sweeping John Williams-esque soundtrack full of fanfares and epic climaxes when consoles had bleepy chiptunes and most PC games had no music at all. This was the game that made VGA and a sound card must-haves. An Adlib or SoundBlaster would do the job, but if you had a Roland sound card, it absolutely humiliated the Genesis and even the then-unreleased SNES. In another first, Wing Commander was one of the first games to have a dynamic soundtrack where it would cycle pieces in and out depending on the state of the game. The music would get uplifting if you were doing well and frantic if you were taking damage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOJ_hLsULs4 Combat (disadvantage) (1:37)

Wolfenstein 3D/Spear of Destiny (1992)
WWII and march/oompah music go together much better than the generic Hans Zimmer film soundtrack crap that most WWII shooters are saddled with. Seriously catchy shit. "The Ultimate Challenge" was my introduction to odd time signatures (I think it's 5/4?).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8Ux-x9TrVA The SS Gonna Get You (1:31)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jVUqzoSlpc The Ultimate Challenge (1:22)

Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi (1992)
By far the best Wing Commander game, with the best soundtrack. It deepens the cinematic aspects without going overboard like WC3 and Warren Spector is still there to be the Spielberg to Chris Roberts' Lucas. Most of WC1's music is carried over but WC2 adds many new pieces, including character leitmotifs. They are amazing.

Rise of the Triad (1994)
Why put jazz fusion and Latin music in a first-person shooter? Why the fuck not? The butt-metal covers from the 2013 remake are a disgrace, so here are the originals played back on a Roland SC-88.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ6IBG2d1GU Here Boy (0:26) (remember, this is a MIDI and had to remain recognizable on an OPL synthesizer so it's actually really clever!)

Tyrian (1994)
Just by thinking about Tyrian, I got Tyrian music stuck in my head. It does that.

MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat (1995)
Warrior tribes fashioned after medieval Mongols duke it out in high-tech giant robots with a strangely clinical presentation. The music is kind of primitive, kind of futuristic, and definitely alien. One of the first games to use redbook audio for music, though I didn't have a CD drive at the time and could only play the demo.

Terminal Velocity (1995)
After years of farty OPL music, hearing music that has actual recording and mixing involved in a video game, even with crappy 8-bit samples like in .mod files, made a big impression on me. Terminal Velocity was mechanically oversimplified and sterile but its graphics and sound were unbeatable in 1995.

Quake (1996)
I don't like Nine Inch Nails at all, but Trent Reznor is much better when he's writing without rock song structures, beats, or vocals. What in NIN is juvenile angst becomes overwhelming, apocalyptic dread.

Descent: FreeSpace: The Great War (1998)
One of the earliest "Colon Cancer" patients, the game fans call "FreeSpace 1" for obvious reasons has a sound track that is the concentrated essence of space opera turned into sound. FreeSpace 2 is a better game and has a more ambitious, dramatic soundtrack, but it doesn't have the same spacey vibe as the first game's music. If anyone picks up this franchise (highly unlikely!), they better hire Dan Wentz--FreeSpace without a Dan Wentz soundtrack is just not FreeSpace.

Unreal (1998)
Unreal was one of the last games to use tracker music, but what a way for the format to go out! The richness and diversity of Unreal's music blew away the dull, repetitive groove metal of its rival Quake II. Also it's by the guy who made Tyrian (not just the music, the whole thing), so you know it's going to be good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpRYFAW9jJk Shared Dig (5:43)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzdKlSrG8iM Sunspire (8:28) (some people hate this level, but it's probably my favorite because of the music)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft9niSvJovs Temple of Vandora (4:10)

This goes beyond the time period I'm focusing on but I'm also impressed that The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings managed to make medieval fantasy music that sounded medieval, instead of modern soundtrack music with the occasional lute strumming. News flash for fantasy game and movie creators: Valved brass instruments are not medieval. Violin family instruments are not medieval. Warbling sopranos and shouting tenors drenched in vibrato are definitely not fucking medieval. Most fantasy games and movies use music that sounds like late 19th century/early 20th century music, assuming
it's not just Hans Zimmer (may the Protocaliphora fly lay eggs in his testicles) or someone who sounds just like Hans Zimmer (may the ground he walks on turn as barren as the Sahara).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFK6YM4JU6I Path of the Kingslayer (4:22)
Listen to those winds. No keys, no metal flutes, just a wooden tube with a reed and a bunch of holes in it. Sure, the timbres are all beefed up to sound BIG like a 19th century symphony orchestra but at least they're making an effort.

I enjoyed a decent chunk of Mirror's Edge's soundtrack. At times, the sparse melodies and chord progressions reminded me of the Chrono series, if the setting were modern and urban. Two examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ5SdMa ... F&index=15

I dig the remix of the menu theme, as well:

Damn this stuff is amazing and so different from Quake 2. I've heard that Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka mentions Trent Reznor/NIN as a big influence and it seems pretty point blank here. These tracks would fit perfectly in Silent Hill.

Speaking of Silent Hill I'd probably have a hard time picking my favorite music wise between SH2 and SH4. SH2 I think has the best standouts, but SH4 was perfection.

This is probably my top favorite for SH2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk-3uAkcPXQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke5VSATXVCI - Day of the Night is similar and awesome, but I think Prisonic Fairytale is a bit more menacing and probably one of the best intro tracks in the medium. Immediately sets the tone. The atmosphere is suffocating in the opening minutes of the game!

Some of my favorites from SH4, the dark jazzy cutscene / character interaction tracks in this one were so good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MJi3AkCkm4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXhoD9MUDts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFfmGGAFWWE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLvbEsYO2qE - my favorite BGM track, I can picture the floating spiraling staircase with the space tearing wtf holes so clearly

This was the standout track for Silent Hill Origins to me:

Indeed, Unreal and UT totally obliterate quake when it comes to the soundtracks. It isn't even a contest really. I love Unreal's soundtrack for sure, mainly for the atmospheric tracks like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWtLNDTPsTA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tc9aFnrajU

And as good as Unreal's soundtrack is, UT99 is yet another step ahead. You have two great composers here, first is Alexander Brandon who has received some praise in this thread already. He is really good at writing the catchy, driving electronic rock/metal tunes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_6cZzjfjSs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3otKIBNqciw

Then Michiel van den Bos is really good at the orchestral epic tracks. I believe he also did the first Unreal track I listed above:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTWVT62CX6o

Best PC game soundtracks ever.

Fallout 4's soundtrack is going to kick ass. Look up The Last Mariner, it's so hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric.

I've always preferred the Teddybears remix myself.

Weird connection: the woman who sings the main theme, Lisa Miskovsky, provided guest vocals to one of the less terrible tracks on In Flames's Come Clarity.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiGiiL3BOwI (Introduction) - this is the opening video of Ultima 6, but also contains one of my favorite songs from the series.

God damn... The Ultimas always had pretty genius music, but they really hit something out of this world with The False Prophet. I was familiar with III, IV and V before playing VI and even though Stones was in the prior ones, those three songs that embody a certain time in my childhood, playing that for hours on end together with a friend at his place. So much nostalgia embedded in there, but I think those three (Introduction and its variations) are pretty stellar compositions even on their own. The feelings they invoke are just of such magnitude.

I was gonna post some of my own, but maybe that can wait for another day.

Metal Gear Solid 5 OST. This random Ludvig Forssell guy just came out of nowhere and took names. At first I thought half the tracks (Tape 1 selection) were mostly bands, but they're originals.

Plenty of older games from Amiga and C-64 had catchy tunes that I find myself listening to even today. Not a lot of PC games, especially of the modern type, have managed that. Too much orchestration and film score feel to them. Some of the Black Isle/Bioware titles had pretty decent music, especially Planescape: Torment had some tunes that really stuck. Perhaps the music on those is even more film score-like than usual, but it works. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem that Morrigan mentioned is another one with great songs in it that stand well enough on their own - as single tracks and as a whole album. There are some that can be a tad too dramatic and gameplay-oriented for their own good as standalone listens.

One personal favorite that I've recently re-discovered is Fist II: The Legend Continues. The game has three songs to it, rather short twiddles that alternate within the game. Unfortunately only one is available on YouTube on its own, the other two only in a longplay. The "temple" theme is a very short one anyway, probably only about twenty seconds. The "outdoors" theme (in the beginning of gameplay) is very atmospheric, even creepy when combined with the mystery of the game (as a kid I didn't know what the hell I was doing or what was going on) and the night time background. The "dungeon" theme - also the menu theme - has a mysterious vibe to it and while the foreground elements are mostly melancholy and mystery, the background bass has a certain malevolent element to it, keeping one on edge.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate has some amazing tracks, particularly the boss battle tracks that really get your blood pumping. Here are some of my favourites:

Zinogre
Nargacuga (has a Soul Blade/Calibur feel to it, I think)
Brachydios
Ceadeus, part 1 (moody underwater piece)
Ceadeus, part 2 (the actual battle, love the vocals on this)
Deviljho (he's as scary as this theme sounds!)
Alatreon (he's even scarier than this theme sounds!)

And one of my favourites from the original Monster Hunter Tri, the Jhen Mohran fight (kind of a boring fight to be honest but the music makes it all worth it) in three parts:

Part 1, Jhen Mohran ship battle
Part 2, The Final Showdown (my favourite part)
Part 3, The Dragonator (means you're about to win, very motivating! sounds like Star Wars music at times)

Another version of part 3, called "Testament of a Hero" on the MH Tri OST, combines the main theme and the Dragonator part: Testament of a Hero

Here's a version with parts 1 and 2 combined:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7iHmsjfHiQ

The composers are Yuko Komiyama (of Megaman X7 and X8 fame) and Tadayoshi Makino, the latter also composed the music in Dragon's Dogma, you can hear the same style in this epic as fuck track:

Dragon's Dogma - Imminent Triumph -- This plays when the monster's health is low and you're on your way to winning. It never gets old and never fails to elicit a "fuck yeah, shit's going down!" reaction. :)

I'm going to see Akira Yamaoka (& friends) live next week, and I'm stoked enough to post about it. Silent Hill Live I don't really have anything to add to to this post since he's already well regarded but if people want me to post impressions/pictures then let me know.

I saw Taylor Davis in concert today :) She plays game music, movie scores, anime soundtracks, and has original compositions. The concert itself was cool. On the screen behind her it showed an alternate Final Fantasy VII menu screen with her and her pianist and the cursor scrolled through equipping her with a violin and then she started the concert with Dr Wily's Castle from Mega Man 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRmQ6WlIjlY

And played some of the following:

Gerudo Valley

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNGbpldBJUI

The Skyrim theme

https://taylordavisviolin.bandcamp.com/ ... yrim-theme

and after receiving a standing ovation at the end she did a Zelda medley.

My all time favorite game song is Dream of the Shore Near Another World from Chrono Cross. This version of it is just amazing!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBCrUBHIDqc

I think Xenogears has to have one of the all time best soundtracks. The One Who is Torn Apart is a masterpiece

Oh man Alatreon's theme at 1:15 just kicks all kinds of ass! If this music starts to play while he's doing his enraged dives at you or when he's flailing on the floor and you're trying to smash those horns it's just the perfect feeling of intensity.

Oh snap... Surprised nobody has mentioned Dynasty Warriors  My favorite game series since childhood, with DW4 being my favorite video game ever. The soundtrack made me a metal fan. Some of the riffs and leads are fantastic. :headbang:

I actually learned all of the string parts of this song, even the bass solo at the end! It's just so awesome: The Wall of Fate

My other favorites include:
Limit of Ability and Run, run, run
Parade of Death
Lu Bu Theme
The Men of Intelligence
Yellow Storm
In Full Bloom
Eve (The flute in this one is amazing)
Cry For Wind
Gain Ground

Dynasty Warriors had epic music, the only thing that bugged me is that the in your face nature of it made it ill suited to it's repetition while playing, I found it a tad overbearing. But I guess that's Dynasty Warriors for you.

Everyone knows about Myst, many have played it, but I rarely hear it brought up in threads like these. The whole series has great music, but I think by far the most memorable piece is the intro to the very first game. That atmosphere of mystery but also fascinating, dangerous wonders just about to unfold:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVdfgFr2-EU

It still sends chills up my spine over 20 years later.

Uru also has a lot of great music, with very different flavors:

Air Stream, one of the few tracks from a real-world setting, out in the desert of New Mexico:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDLWttoFptM

Gallery Theme, from one of the ancient D'Ni vaults, which reminds me of LOTR elf music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlipEo6cBeY

Badlands, a tribal-flavored number that sounds not too far removed from something Shpongle might do for a soundtrack:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u092jgfqC-U

The original Myst I have strong nostalgia for and am certainly biased, but Uru I played relatively recently, and can say fairly that it has a great soundtrack.

So I'm playing through the PS3 port of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and I'm forever reminded how, after the first game, Yoko Shimomura somehow became incapable of writing any upbeat song that wasn't, like, 300 bpm. And then "Hazardous Highway" happened. What the hell--is this Kingdom Hearts or F-Zero?!

I believe you've shared this with me before; this is a great remix/remake as always.

This dude is doing the DooM 2016 soundtrack. Holy balls this is some dark, edgy and heavy cinematic industrial. I can tell I'm going to love this soundtrack and listen to it probably a hundred times or more. He absolutely nails this style and has his own personal aesthetic that sets it apart from similar acts. Hnnnnng I need this game and this music
