I'm searching for something different/experimental among the melodic death scene. Anything that sounds very different than most melodeath bands would do.
Any suggestions?

Look through my reviews.

Otherwise you'd have to specify what exactly you are looking for in "experimental."

Humm...
This is probably a very noobish question, but... How do I browse your reviews? I clicked on your profile and didn't see a link or something

Does anybody know any good melodic death/power metal bands like Mercenary?

What is it you like about Mercenary? Do you like their earlier albums, which seem more aggressive and ambitious, or their later ones, which have more focused, poppy songwriting?

Either way, try Raintime:
Spoiler: show

And I don't always like Omnium Gatherum, but I bet you would. They put on a great live show, too.

Spoiler: show

Soilwork is another modern-melodeath band with an excellent and versatile vocalist, Speed Strid.

Spoiler: show

The "Similar Artists" tab on the archives band page will also help you.

I really like earlier Mercenary albums like Everblack, 11 Dreams, and Architect of Lies.

Don't know if anyone mentioned them, but give Be'lakor a try.

Wow, never heard of that triumvirate before!

Come on man, "Tri" is in the name of that word. Quadumvirate? Tetrumvirate? I think I'm inventing new words here now.

Ah well, for clarity's sake, then:

Children of Bodom, Kalmah and Norther are the "big 3" of non-Gothenburg melodeath and oftentimes grouped together for obvious reasons.

So you were excluding Wintersun then, I see.

Naturally, as such band is a non-entity as far as I am concerned.

It's sad that Jari's antics and that total letdown that was Time I makes people completely disregard their debut...which I think is amazing.

"Winter Madness" and "Battle Against Time" are good.

I have that CD on order - but unfortunately I have to wait til April 8th (or so) due to other pre-orders. I liked their 1st album a lot, so I have pretty high hopes for this one.

I capitulated and downloaded a mp3 version to tide me over until my hard copy arrives. I'm pretty happy with it - not sure I like it more or less than the debut but its definitely different from it. Seems tighter, more epic, and more melodic. Unfortunately, its so tight that most songs and the album itself are really short. I guess dropping $25 US for a 35 minute album kinda sucks, but I should be used to that by now. :P I guess with all my incessant bitching about album lengths, this should be a good thing. Like, that GYZE seriously needed 20 minutes sawed off.

I'll probably end up scoring it an 80-85% (I'd probably score the debut a 75-80%). Don't like the mastering though (the shock), but anything done by Studio Prisoner is loud as fuck. Still sounds way better than that fucking GYZE though lol I'm actually looking forward to that latest Ghost Cries more - similar style, same country/label, same CD order. Not sure why I didn't get that one when it was first released.

Yeah, this Serenity in Murder is pretty damn competent. Nicely arranged and accessible compositions.

The new Serenity in Murder is great, not as great as 90' melodeath, yet better than most melodeath of this decade.
I'm looking for some progressive melodeath, like Andsolis, Morna and Be'Lakor, or any new bands that play old-school melodeath like December Flower.

Can somebody help me? I'm looking for finnish melodic Death metal/thrash metal band. I found a band last year from Finland and their singer sounded like the singer I thought from Dark Tranqulity. I can't remember name of band.

Infinite Tales. I absolutely love their debut album, particularly their singer's voice.

That Aussie band is pretty good. They sound pretty metalcore-y (which I don't mind) and that intro took my hopes way down low, but when the verse kicked in, I was very impressed.

As far as death metal goes House of Atreus and Morbius (USA) are the two most similar bands to Arghoslent that I have come across to date. House of Atreus, particularly the demo and EP, is probably the closest band you'll find. They have an album they released this year as well. It is good but not as good as their previous two releases.

The other band, Morbius (USA), lacks the melody of Arghoslent. However their drummer is the same guy who has played on all the Arghoslent material from 1998 - 2008 so you should find some similarities.

Some people also say Sacriphyx is similar but I couldn't get into them. They do share some vague similarities but I didn't think they were that close in style. Hope this helps, and if you come across any similar bands let me know.

I stumbled upon this band 'Solerrain' a few months back. It is really high energy stuff drenched in decent keys like Children of Bodom... kind of reminds me of Nothgard as well. Nice mixture of styles.

This EP seems to be really fucking good but I can't find the whole thing. The leads are really impressive and I love the synth.

Chaos Construct, a one-man project from Sweden. Hopefully, this will emerge into a band. Teaser: Godless, No Resistance, Leap of Faith.

My topic on the Metal Discussion hasn't maintained popularity, but The Arcane Order are releasing their new album tomorrow and I'm definitely pumped for it. Here's the song they previewed.
