Cypecore is pretty standard modern melodeath. They sound nothing like their garish, theatrical stage appearance implies.

Starkill is a popular American melodeath band trying to sound as European as they can. I'm personally not a big fan but many people like this band.

Hey,,

Does anyone know of a classic Gothenburg album that makes regualr use of synths or orchestral arrangements? Something that isnt too recent?

The only thingh I know of is Ebony Tears's Totura Insominae. Its a decent enough album, but their melodeath riffs are not anywhere near as good as some of the other classic bands of the genre. Ive heard a little of the first Unanimated album and it might be promising, though its not as moody as say something from Sacrilege or DT. Im also aware of Dark Lunacy, and they are amazing, but they dont have that 'classic sound'.

THis genre is new to me, are their any albums im missing that might have what im looking for?

Maybe Neaera, minus the synth-y keyboard-y stuff? Their early stuff is sorta leaning towards metalcore, but Let the Tempest Come and Armamentarium are both pretty top notch German melodic death albums as far as I'm concerned.

Hey, I'm looking for something like Eye Of Horus' Infernal Calling. For those who can't be bothered to look it up, I'm looking for something quite heavy and technical, with no clean singing and predominately driven by the guitar. Thanks.

I'm just listening to them for the first time, but they remind me of Arsis' newest album, Unwelcome.

And here and there the chuggy/metalcore moments make me think of August Burns Red.

I think you might also enjoy Cryogen's later work, like the EP "Despara."

Thank everybody for great recommendations. What are some other great melodic death/gothic metal bands that are a lot like Laments of Silence? Please don't mention Luna Obscura or Before the Dawn I already know about them.

Urgh, it sounds like any other annoying modern melodeath band... anyway, try EToS recent albums, and check out PorcupineOfDoom's reviews, he/she is into this type of stuff.

Since I'm here could someone recommend some weird, experimental, progressive bands? Something very different, like Ictus and Nux Vomica, that mix crust with melodeath, Dekadent's last album which has some melodeath, or Shylmagoghnar, with their atmospheric/progressive/melodic death/black sound. It can be pure melodeath, as long as it's unique.

Have you tried The Project Hate MCMXCIX? Mostly industrial death but with some melodic death influences (among other genres). I find In Hora Mortis Nostrae to be particularly good, but all of their albums are interesting and unique. I don't venture much into technical death metal but Allegaeon stand out to me as a unique blend of insanely technical stuff that maintains beautiful melodies. Maybe there are others like them, but I haven't explored the genre enough to find any.

Personally I thought both bands' debuts were letdowns, but you might like Sanguine Glacialis or Gone in April. MyGrain also came to mind when listening to Laments of Silence although they aren't a gothic band. You've probably already heard some of their stuff, but you might like Eternal Tears of Sorrow too. Perhaps Lunarsea as well, or maybe even Infinite Tales depending on what you're looking for in terms of gothic elements. There are probably some others I've missed among the albums I've reviewed that you'd find worth checking out.

I've heard the name here and there but never bothered to hear them. Looks interesting... Unfortunately I can't find anything of them on yt, gonna have to download it. Already know Allegaeon, they're great, and for sure they have a fair share of uniqueness but not too much different from other tech bands...

I don't know, maybe I'm getting old for melodeath, maybe already heard everything it has to offer, or maybe it's just that the genre didn't brought anything special in the last years compared to others... where are the Colony's, The Gallery's or SotS of this century? I think I can say in the name of most melodeath fans that we don't need more bands copying post-Clayman IF and Insomnium clones. Sorry for being a little off topic but it was something that I had to throw out.

There are tons of them, unfortunately most of them also have something from new IF like the one you mentioned(the track Pain Of Despair reminds me a lot Colony)... anyway:

Sorrow of Tranquility: decent IF clone with some CoB influences.
(riffs taken straight out of Embody the Invisible, hehe)

The Neologist: heavily influenced by the "4S", but they have a good amount of IF too. They even made an EP with some of the best IF tracks.

Sacrilege: one of my favs, almost as good as old IF, a must listen.

Blazing Skies: shame that they broke up but they left us with some decent stuff.

Those are the one that I can remember right now, but there are many more. Most bands from the 90's like Sacrilege are very similar to them, so if you want more just use the advanced search feature or just do a quick search in the similar artists tab.

Eucharist is essential. Both their full-lengths are great, but Mirrorworlds is more developed and more accessible. If you like Whoracle you'll probably like this:

The Japanese band Shadow might suit you too. Their first album borrows heavily from The Jester Race and it gets good reviews here although I've never found it especially memorable.

Insomnium's debut album is reasonably close, though slightly doomier..

That's post-metal. "Djenty" in the sense that it's low-end heavy, but that's it.

It's not melodeath at all actually. The music overall is in the sludge territory with hardcore influenced vocals and bass-heavy tone, combined into that post-rock thing. Their songs are shorter than those of Isis or Cult of Luna who sound similar.

The closest thing to "post-melodeath" I can think of is the latest Ghost Brigade record, and even that isn't very melodeath. The sound is not as thick though.

Does anyone know any albums identical to Scar Symmetry's first album, Symmetric in Design? The only one I can think of is Soilwork's Natural Born Chaos. (That album clearly inspired Scar Symmetry but it's less riff-laden.)

Mercenary - 11 Dreams always gave me a Scar Symmetry kind of vibe. Check out this song, I think it's awesome as hell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm0DfCZjxe0

I'm a huge Mercenary fan (and yes, World Hate Center is one of their best songs), but that's not quite what I'm looking for. I'll elaborate: Symmetric in Design is full of short, riff-based, poppy songs with clean layered choruses. Very "fun" sounding, and less serious/mature than later Scar Symmetry. This song is a good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-LM6xpyLqY. That's basically what I'm after. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

I'm a huge fan of Symmetric in Design and listened to it countless times so I know what you mean. The problem is I don't think any bands really do what they do even in their own style. They've always had a very distinct identity as a band.

I'm surprised there's no mention of The Absence in this thread. Criminally under-circulated band.

https://youtu.be/Ur1oQ7yW-WY?list=PLqiu ... eQS1M18WHG

As is Neuraxis. They incorporate elements of Tech Death (fuckin Canadians amirite?) and they have so many killer riffs.

Lastly, if you like folk as much as Melodic DM you'll love Eluveitie:
