Then again, the greater the contrast between bright sky and dark trees, the less detail you'll have in trees, sky, or both (due to under/overexposure). Ideally you want to have the least bright patch of the sky as background, or brighten up the trees with a flash (which is near-impossible to do in a non-sucky way). If the sun needs to be on the picture, I'd use a tripod to take a bunch of bracketing shots for HDR merging, and dig out the details in post-processing.

This is true.

Do you use RAW files? It's seems to be all the rage to use RAW files. I have fiddled around with a few, i know they are a lot more detailed and i could get the pics to look really flash, but it kind of seems like cheating, you basically have to edit the photo from scratch. Don't really have the time for it.

I don't know why it's like cheating, it's pretty much just the digital equivalent of developing a film in a darkroom. If you shoot "directly" to JPEG, your camera does just that automatically according to preset parameters (the equivalent of polaroid, kinda). RAW files just contain all of the information the sensor collects, which exceeds what our eyes can process in a picture and therefore still needs to be filtered somehow, just like an analog film still needs to be developed and the negatives still need to be projected on photo paper. In both cases there is still manual creative work to be done to get a finished product. If you let your camera do that work you're simply delegating an important creative step to someone else, like when you bring your analog film to the store for development.

Well i guess it's because you have to make the decision on what settings to have when you are taking a photo with jpeg, basically what you see is what you are going to get, where as with RAW you can do almost every shade and lighting manually.

I didn't take this one but this is me sitting on the edge of a cliff face in the Grand Canyon about 5,000 feet above the air. To even get there I had to jump over a chasm, although it was relatively small there was a straight gap from the approach to the rock all the way down to the canyon floor.

Scotland? I really liked those photos. They have a really honest, simple quality to them.

Thanks :)

Not Scotland, not too far off though. Northern England, Cumbria/Yorkshire area. The fishing photos were from a trip in [very] early spring to somewhere in the South of England.

I am not clicking each individual spoiler tag for each pic.

Why do people still do this? Holy shit.

I did it because I thought if I put so many photos up without spoiler tags people would just complain about the page taking ages to load them all properly.

....That's not how it works.

You could have used a single spoiler tag for all the images. :durr:

It's in the rules of the OP, even:
Quote:
If they are large, use a spoiler tag. Do not use multiple tags for no reason. No reason to force people to click several times over just once to see your photos.

Interesting to see you use soft plastics/jig heads, instead of traditional fly and fly rods. What gear do you use here (rod length, reel size, braid/mono etc)?

Technically those trout were out of season - I was fishing for perch and pike that day with my lure gear but the place where I was fishing has a lot of trout and it's kind of hard to avoid catching them seeing as they will take a lure as well. That day it ended up being all I caught, the perch were nowhere to be seen.

When it is trout season I use fly gear, though I'm not very confident with it.

The lure gear I'm using at present is a relatively small perch rod - about 7ft length - which one of my friends custom built for me. It's a really good perch rod but handles other fish like trout well too, so I've ended up using it for practically all my lure fishing. I use it with 9lb braid and 12/13lb wire trace [I would like to be able to use lighter traces but you can't seem to get lighter than 12lb wire to make 'em]. Sometimes I use a mono trace, but only if there are no pike around.

As for reels, I've just bought a new Daiwa reel, can't recall the name but it's a small one designed for lighter lure work. Prior to that I was using a heavier Daiwa reel which was excellent but somewhat unbalanced the rod a bit.

Sometimes I use spinners, mostly I just stick to soft plastics and jigs. Me and my friend have been refining our gear a lot - we used to winter fish with 2-3 inch lures and 20lb braid, and got less takes as a consequence. Since we met this other guy though [the one who built my rod], he's introduced us to doing it on lighter, finer gear and the results are better. I've only been fishing for 3 years though, after a long time away from it, so it's still a learning curve for me.

At some point soon-esque I'll have a bunch of Vietnam pictures for you guys. Some real stunners in there, I hope.

I live in Zagreb, Croatia but the pictures are from Rovinj where I am on holidays with my family currently. Architecture in the centre of town is even prettier, though, especially with fewer tourists.

I'll take some pictures from the park nearby next time, some very calming scenes there.
