That's definitely the biggest discovery since the Higgs Boson. Funny how it took about 100 years after General Relativity was formulated to detect it. Makes you feel bad for theoreticians.

Hopefully eLISA will be able to add some more information to back this up.

One of my more recent tracks has HEAPS of samples from the Voyager missions (converted via EM signatures to audio), if anyone has super kick arse vids of cosmic stuff (which I WILL wreck and destroy for a film clip) please post or PM.

Go Grav waves!

I have had a lifelong love of space. In college I took astronomy. It had to be one of the best classes I have ever taken. For my final paper I determined the mass of the sun taking my own readings from an observatory.

Anyone ever read any of Stephen Hawkings works on space and time travel? He says it is possible, but it would take a craft with an enormous energy supply, all the while traveling at greatneck speeds. It would have to do this for years and time travel would be achieved.

I've seen a documentary once about a scientists who claimed it would be possible to develop a machine that you could send messages back in time to. You wouldn't be able to send messages to a time before such a machine exists, but once it exists, it might immediate start receiving messages from the future. Don't have any more info about it since it's been ages since I've seen it. Might have been a BBC one or something?

I believe this documentary was called Steins;Gate.

That's pretty cool. He should leave a note in his lab saying, once we get this machine working please send me a message.

https://www.nasa.gov/twins-study

Scott Kelly recently returned to Earth earlier this week from the International Space Station. For those who don't know, he spent 340 days there while his twin brother stayed behind on Earth. They are going to compare the effects that radiation and other aspects of space had on him as opposed to his brother (they are already saying that he gained two inches in his overall height). The goal is to learn more and better optimize humans living in space. From what I've read, this seems to be a precursor to what will eventually lead to sending Humans to Mars and other deep space missions. You can read more about it in the link above and it's all over the news.

SpaceX just succeeded on re-landing the first stage of their Falcon 9 rocket on a barge at sea for the first time. Amazing work! This technology will result in a significant reduction of launch costs now that they don't have to build a rocket from scratch for each launch.

That's actually really fucking neat. I'm pretty positive that that has to be a logistical nightmare, but you're right--if they can consistently do this, funding for future space missions would be super easy to secure.

I just read an update on 'Planet 9'. Turns out it's gravity is not going to unleash mass extinction on Earth, how unfortunate, it would have been pretty metal.

Supposedly it has an extremely eccentric orbit, only orbiting the Sun anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 Earth years, which is why we are just now detecting it. It also is much closer to the Sun certain times in it's orbit than others. It has not been observed directly, however astronomers are detecting it via it's gravitational affect on other objects in the Kuiper Belt in the outer solar system.

While we're wondering about how many planets we may have in our solar system, Stephen Hawking, Mark Zuckerberg and others are supporting a venture to fly to the next.

Wow that is amazing, I have to pull a quote from that article:

Quote:
The concept is to reduce the size of the spacecraft to about the size of a chip used in electronic devices. The idea is to launch a thousand of these mini-spacecraft into the Earth's orbit. Each would have a solar sail.
This is like a sail on a boat - but it is pushed along by light rather than the wind. A giant laser on Earth would give each one a powerful push, sending them on their way to reaching 20% of the speed of light.

I've never even heard about something this mind-blowing in science-fiction, let alone proposed in real life! They are talking about creating nano-spacecrafts in order to make a journey in 30 years that should take 30,000 with existing technology. I really hope they figure it out, because that would be the first up-close glimpse at an extrasolar planet.

I fucking love space.
i remember, a while back, i had this dream where I was "apprenticed" under an astronomer. i think he had my look through a telescope or something at the sun, which, looking back, makes no sense, and find some form of energy or something. I can't really remember much of it,but I remember waking up and thinking to myself "You know, astronomy is pretty cool. i think i would like being an astronomer."
Since then, I've had this want to be an astronomer. I'm not sure how much I'm gonna persue it, it'll proably just end up being a hobby, mostly because most of my life my dream career is an author. But, still, it could be something for me to fall back on.

I'm surprised to see that the WaitButWhy article on SpaceX hasn't been linked before in this thread. I thought every space and SpaceX fan had read it.

According to a youtube page I visited a while back the scientist stated the Voyager space craft will reach the edge of our galaxy in about 2.5 million years. That is cool.

I do not think it will come back our way. I would think it will continue on a direction away from our place in the galaxy.

This is really exciting. I read from another source that Juno is the farthest solar powered spacecraft we have ever sent out and that it has strong titanium shields to protect against the intense radiation that Jupiter emits. I really hope they learn what is at the core of Jupiter as well as what is going on in that Great Red Spot. Does anyone know if they will be studying any of the moons of Jupiter? I certainly hope so because they are just as fascinating as the planet itself.

Official answer from today's AMA with the Juno team:

"The focus of Juno is the interior of Jupiter. JunoCam, the education/public outreach camera, will image the satellites during the course of the mission, but at lower resolution than Voyager, Galileo, or New Horizons. That said, the composition of Jupiter will be an important consideration for future missions, such as the future Europa mission to unravel the complete story about Jupiter's formation."

That's awesome.

While I do really like Juno for the obvious reasons, i.e. learning a lot more about Jupiter's interior, I also really love the fact that it's a giant space tank carrying Lego minifigs.

Anyone going to be watching the Perseid meteor shower? There is a huge dark sky preserve about an hour out of town, gonna drive out there tonight to check it out.

Yes, I'm spending the whole week watching the overcast sky (same we had during the 1999 solar eclipse) and imagining the Perseids.

I managed to find about half an hour last night to try and watch the Persieds, the rest of the time it's been cloudy. I saw about 5 decent streaks across the sky in that time, so could have been better. There were so many that I wasn't sure were my eyes playing tricks on me or just that they were so faint because of light pollution.

Venus once looked a lot like Earth NASA scientists have said. Modelling done by the space agency’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies has indicated the planet could have enjoyed a vastly different past to its current form. Scientists have long theorised that the planet was once made up of similar elements to Earth but given its proximity to the Sun took a different evolutionary path. Evidence from a pioneering mission in the 1980s suggested that Venus may have once had an ocean. Venus may have even had life in the distant past.

Here's a theory that instead of being some completely strange, completely unknown particles, dark matter could actually be slightly less strange and slightly less unknown primordial black holes being a lot more common than previously thought.

Soooo neat! It's not like we'll be heading there any time soon exactly, but it still very interesting. It makes us visiting a habitable exoplanet seem like an actual, tangible possibility rather than some dream for the distant future. Apparently they hope to determine whether it has an atmosphere and oxygen within the next ten years.

So the Russians found aliens 96 light years away... Kinda cool, but unfortunately very probably the result of a terrestrial thingy of some sort.

Of course the result of a terrestrial thingy, 96 light years is a realistic distance for Nazi UFOs to cover at their top speed.

Technically, if we assume they left in 1945, and got close to light speed, and we calculate the time it takes to get the signal back here, too, the signal would have been sent around 1980 from close to the half-way point, and they'd almost be there by now.

It also means that Uncle Adolf is still physically approximately 57 years old. Because theory of relativity. Duh.
