Hebrew part in the last song is fucked.

Actually this is a big problem. I managed to recover the lyrics from v1, but the order of the words is totally fucked up in both v1 and v2. The correct lyrics should read (Note that Hebrew is written from right to left)
Image
But when I copy and paste, since the default writing order in MA is left-to-right, the words are reversed! Look at the first line. In MA, the leftmost words are פורצים צבאות (incorrect), which should be the rightmost two words (correct).

The words are properly arranged (gave it a tiny aftertouch to reflect the arrangement of lines of the translation).

A simple task for those who have time. Go to advanced search --> search songs, in the lyrics, search ** (including the asterisks), you will list a list of more than 2000 songs that contain this "placeholder for unknown characters" . In most cases, the lyrics are in English, and this is usually the apostrophe (') (most often), or quotation marks ("), or dash (-), or ellipsis (...) and it should be very clear which is which. If someone could take care of this shit, I can focus on more technical recovering of mojibaked lyrics, mostly for bands from Eastern European countries.

Edit:
Another equivalent deformation is (you should search ** in lyrics). In English lyrics, it is ALMOST ALWAYS the apostrophe ('), which should be quite clear from the context. But in other languages (e.g. Spanish, German), it can be letters with diacritics, so one needs to very careful. If someone could take care of the shit in English lyrics, that will be great.

This is an old post, but applies to what I'm doing right now. I'm a little confused, but I want to get this right. Bear with me. Another post made 5 days ahead of yours (viewtopic.php?f=17&t=93525) refers to this as the guideline:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia ... ion_titles

In it are the rules for what not to capitalize:
"- Short coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor; also for, yet, so when used as conjunctions)" - "then" is not mentioned in this list, and I have a reason to believe this is the full list of conjunctions, as it doesn't say "etc." the way it does with the list of prepositions below it.

I didn't go through the whole list of words in your post, but at least "than" can be used both as a preposition and conjunction, so it shouldn't be in lowercase every time.

I just want to make sure we're all on the same page here, and not giving out contradictory info to people. I found your post via the search, and other people might too. This means other people might start to follow these rules, although I think the post by Morrigan (link above) is the "official" one.

(I'm the same guy you're replying to, under a different account.) I reserve the right to be wrong (I noticed back then I said "but" is never capitalized, but if you use it as an adverb meaning "only" it is - e.g. "He Was But a Child"), so I'd defer to Wiki's guidelines for now unless you can find a source that directly addresses the definition of a "short conjunction". I must admit, though, that I thought the capitalization guidelines for conjunctions were the same as those for prepositions, i.e. only capitalize the ones with <4 letters, and a word like "than" or "then" being capitalized would look strange to me.

This is exactly what I thought too. I still have to remind myself of it every now and then, as I sometimes have no idea what's a preposition and what's not, until I look it up from Wiktionary. Yesterday I looked up a list of all the English prepositions, and it had words such as "amid" that (to my surprise) should also be in lowercase. The archives are just full of surprises when you get deep enough into it.

Somebody reported that the below artist had died. The band's facebook page does not say anything about it and the person in question has submitted a report to say he is very much alive. Can this be taken care of?

Wrong thread mjollny. I resurrected him, if anything because there is a significant amount of doubt cast on the validity of the original report, certainly not enough to warrant the status now. Maybe some proof will surface.

For the record, I demoted the user who added that. He already had a history of sloppy edits (including guessing people's date of death, it would seem...).

That's such a weird thing to put in randomly. And I can't find any false news about it either. On the other hand, it only took like a day to get back to the artist that he was dead. MA's got some nice visibility!

Fixed. Also fixed the two related Japanese bands. About the Belarusian name, in the artist page, it says the real name is Анастасия Черпинская, then it should be Cherpinskaya.

I feel disappointed to see that the mojibaked Japanese names were added by experienced users. These names were obviously wrong. No one will use a name like Žá—Ñ’B–ç (this is 若林達也 encoded with Shift-JIS, wrongly decoded with Window-1252). When the users do not know how to recover them, they should just leave it. After all, what good does it have to collect a bunch of gibberish, meaningless strings?

Used to do this when this thread was still new, but it seemed like a decent enough idea to bring back. This is a list of every report from the beginning of the thread to the post above me that still needs to be addressed.

Cyrillic and Slavic countries:
http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Ta ... 0%B5/42455 - Per additional notes, track names are translated, original Bulgarian names needed
http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Oh ... ams/108603 - Estonian mojibakes in lyrics

Swedish:
http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Se ... rd.../2895 - Lyrics for tracks 2-5

Dumbfuckery:
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Can ... 3540290698 - It would appear that their stagenames are written in either an obscure language (at least one I've never seen) or they just made up a bunch of symbols and used those as names. Whatever the names, what we have does not match up.

It's been well over a year since anyone posted in this list, which makes me think we've cleared pretty much everything out. Below is the only open report from this thread that has still not been corrected.

Cyrillic and Slavic countries:
http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Oh ... ams/108603 - Estonian band; mojibakes in lyrics for tracks 3, 5, & 6

http://www12.tok2.com/home/ashquasar/

That link leads to an old homepage for Ash Quasar, one of the more obscure bands on the site that does not have anything in its discography, or much information about the band itself. It's also completely unreadable in Mojibakes. If anyone can work some magic, it'll be interesting to see what info is there.

It's showing in kanji (I assume) here.

Edit: I will enter some basic data, but if someone who can actually read the language would have a look...

Edit edit: Not much info on discography to be found there, but there was quite a lot of detail on history and lineup.

The tracklist of 偏執症者 > Satyagraha is clearly transliterated from Japanese. Here (discogs) are the original titles (click on "more images" and see the second photo). Someone familiar with Japanese could help.

I'm not sure they really are the original titles, only ones I can find anywhere are the transliterated ones. Apart from the pic you linked I can't find any others that show the tracklist. The band is from Sweden, I sincerely doubt they actually speak (or sing in) Japanese.

Track 10 does not read "Hi no Naka no Sõgi" by the way (that would be 火の中に葬儀), it reads "Kaen no Sõgi." [* Sõgi should be Sōgi or Sougi]

Anyway, here are the titles in kanji. Maybe it be best to add to the notes, or place them behind the transliterated titles.
1 解放
2 健全なる精神崩壊
3 埋められない不純
4 暴力
5 NANGIJALA (死後の世界)
6 死する世界、生き地獄
7 支配者
8 虚偽策略
9 血塗られた闘争
10 火焔の葬儀

Recovered from v1, should be "explored tabú" (possibly means taboo?). It's in accordance with what is sung.

Recovered from v1. Indeed Hebrew. Shame that a plain textbox has very poor support for right-to-left scripts.

I'm not that well versed in Greek, but I'm pretty sure track one is incorrect on this release. "Λåïðà" does not seem to be correct, but of the few links I can find online that use the Greek titles, this is what's shown

Λåïðà is a broken code for the Greek word "Lepra", as said on the tracklist translation at DiscoGS, fixed.

Added this band. Some song titles are in French. I just want to double check the song title edits that happened after getting accepted.

From "L'Ermite Dionysiaque (Énigmes de Fulcanelli)" to "L'ermite dIonysiaque (2nigmes de Fulcanelli)".
From "Mon Nom Inconnu Se Cache Dans Les Serpents" to "Mon nom inconnu se cache dans les serpents".

I copied all song titles exactly how they were spelled from the j-card from the cassette:
