http://qz.com/840661/what-cd-is-gone-a- ... the-world/

Apparently what.cd was an online music sharing community boasting "the greatest music collection in the history of the world". It shut down after a raid by French authorities. It's an interesting read, though the article is hyperbolic to the extreme as the site was far too exclusionary to be comparable to Wikipedia, and it obviously doesn't have a fraction of the cultural significance of the library of Alexandria.

Does anyone here have any experience with the site? In particular I'm curious about the extent of their metal collection, because the article makes it sound like I should expect to find obscure black metal demos on there that were not available elsewhere.

It's kind of a bit late to be concerned with what they had on the archive, no? Anyway, this was posted in the FFA a week ago, basically only one user here ever used the site from the reactions after it happened.

They had some surprisingly obscure metal releases, but I felt like it was probably geared towards electronic music listeners. I've had far better luck finding obscure black metal demos on Soulseek.

Very unfortunate that it had to go, though.

I found a bunch of demos on there, old Death demos and such, would have looked for a few more this week if it had still been up.

I was never able to pass the entrance exam and I had one chance left, oh well. At least there's still soulseek.

What kind of exam did they have?

Some incredibly dumb test to verify that you're an "audiophile." You have to know shit about transcoding, fairly in-depth stuff about the various formats like .flac, etc. I got in via an invite, thankfully.

That aside, it was the single best music library on the Internet. This is just one album:

Regarding metal, I'm not going to act like the typical (ex-)user and claim they had everything that exists, but you would have a much harder time not finding an album.

Right. Stuff you only learn by being a part of an online warez community that spergs over rip quality and that.

The metalhead thread there was a gold mine of good music. I hadn't been on in some time since my last computer shit the bed (was stuck with just a phone for a while), but I don't have another place I can trust as much for new stuff.

This sucks. Bad.
