Nodding Sky from Finland fits in this category like a glove.
We are about to release our debut album and we have already given the first taste of whats about to come:

We have released an EP back in 2011, heres a song from that album too:

Please give us a listen and feel free to comment!

May anyone rec me folk metal bands that heavily use medieval imagery and authentic medieval instrumentation? I would like for it to be upbeat. A rugged sound, not something airy.

Something like this with metal:

ah, it's not metal, but it has a 'rugged' sound with a feel like the links you posted

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYSsOQxdR1I

might wanna check out a French scene. pretty much anything with that vibe seems to come from there.

Ah my gods that is also perfect.

And will check out France. ha, pretty sure that's due to the huge amount of troubadours coming from there.

Illdåd
just heard these guys today
right from the album intro I was hooked
best folk metal I've heard in yonks
reminiscent of Otyg with the Swedish style and female vocals, but also feels very fresh/original, and has quite a unique guitar sound for the genre! and the whole album is great. perfectly produced.

seems to be a bit of a trend of Celtic influenced Eastern Euro bands with Latin character band names.

Look around the "Medieval Metal" scene - almost every one of those bands has a clean vocalist.

This whole thing, basically. I also recommend their second album which is all original music, it's amazing.

I've listed every single one I'm familiar with in this file (link is facebook's hosting), just keyword search 'Herr Mannelig' to skip straight down to the relevant section

Can anyone tell me what happened to Tengger Cavalry this year? I've been a big fan of the band since the beginning, but I missed out on a lot of music in general this past year. I look them up and they've had 4 albums, a total change in band members, and they aren't on metal hell records anymore either?

I'm currently listening to Hymn of the Earth, a rerecorded album of a previous album. I can't say that I am far enough to make a judgment comparing the two. I don't even know if I need to. From what I have heard it is a really enjoyable album. I liked the old album in the first place, but the production and whatever else musically they've added into it sounds really nice.

Can anyone recommend me some happy folk metal that isnt the typical folky drinking sort of thing? Nothing like Korpiklaani or Fintroll, but something that elicits that same feeling.

But how else can one be happy without beer? Haha

I racked my brain a bit and the only band I came up with is Tuatha de Danann. Brazilian group that are quite bouncy and happy. Listen to their album Trova di Danú!

I know it doesnt make sense but something that's not too dependant on folk instruments. I mean yeah it can have it, but I'd rather have the guitars portray that sort of happy feeling rather than the typical jiggy stuff. Keyboards are fine as well.

Ah! I'd been trying to remember the band name Bifrost for like 2 years now! Listened to that album years ago and loved it for a while, then totally forgot their band name :crash: I see they have some new albums since I last heard them too. Definitely going to check those out.

I'm looking for bands that are like 1/8-1/4 folk metal and 3/4 literally anything else (other than power metal). I have a best friend who is constantly harping on me to get into folk metal but he only plays trash like Finntroll, Korpiklaani, and fucking Alestorm which are just so stupidly folk it seriously hurts.

Not to say I don't enjoy folk-ish parts. I love Agalloch and I've liked the folk-influenced segments of some Taake and Melechesh songs. Moonsorrow is great as well. However, in my experience straight up folk metal seems too dopey and... troll-y for my tastes. But if you can refer me to a straight up folk metal band that isn't like that, extra brownie points to you. Pantheistic or nature-themed lyrics are a plus.

Bands I don't like:
Ensiferum, Turisas, Tyr, Alestorm, Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Eluveitie, Skyclad

Anyone know any folk/pagan metal full of rich, uplifting choir keyboards and triumphant leads? Like the ones Moonsorrow's Jumalten Kaupunki/Tuhatvuotinen Perintö, or the ending bit of Темнозорь's White Thunder Roars. Something like that but much more frequent.

Maybe give Orphaned Land a try. Mabool is a damn good album by them.

Is there any folk metal which mixes diverse traditions of folk music? For example, a fusion of Scottish and Chinese folk music. I would prefer it to be more in the area of black/folk, but any form of folk metal is welcome. Thank you.
