Yes I don't understand either, this is all on topic. Everything has been about video game music... wrong thread?

Whoa that was weird. I thought I posted that in a different thread. My bad!

I'm checking out the Turrican soundtrack right now. Sounds kinda like 8-bit Dark Tranquillity.

Well, since this thread's been revived I'd might as well talk about how awesome Metal Slug's music is! I once made a huge write-up about this, but instead I'm just going to post my favorites from each game.

Metal Slug 1 - MS1 has my favorite music from the original trilogy. It has this perfect blend of rock, orchestra (or MIDI interpretations of it, anyways), and jazz.
Metal Slug Theme
Inner Station
Ridge 256
Hold You Still

Metal Slug 2/X - I feel like this is my least favorite. There's some gems here and there, but I feel it's too reliant on remixes to really stand out.
Living on the Deck
Back to China
Judgement

Metal Slug 3 - Fortunately, MS3 stomps in and drops a ton of new music.
Blue Water Fangs
Midnight Wandering
Desert Theme

Metal Slug 4 - This one introduced a new composer, and is better off for it imo. It's a really cool hybrid of rock and synth orchestras, and the new hardware makes it sound great.
Snowy Road
Secret Place
Furiously

Metal Slug 5 - My favorite soundtrack overall. Just orchestras, synths, and crushing guitar riffs everywhere. My jaw legitimately dropped when I heard that sound coming up it of that hardware.
Heavy African
Bottom of the Sea
Fierce Battle

Metal Slug 6 - Goes the opposite way of MS5, with lots of funky electronica and dance music. Very unique.
Inner Goldfield
Asian Impact
Biotoxic

Metal Slug 7 - What I really like about the post-MS3 games is that their soundtracks go for something different each time. MS7 goes for bombastic orchastras, and it is amazing.
Scrap Island
Snowy Country
Combat School

Metal Slug 3D - MS3D is the black sheep of the franchise, but hey, the soundtrack is pretty awesome. Falls somewhere between 4 and 5 witht the orchestra-rock mix.
Out of Control
Coal Mine Mark
People Who Had a Time Hard [sic]

I came across this song randomly and I think if you speed up by at least 50% it would sound like a technical death metal song something like Vale of Pnath would write.

Hmm, yep. That's the exact right amount of metal for a fight with a cybernetic aztec eagle atop an aircraft carrier. I give Capcom a lot of shit, but they made some damn good soundtracks.

MMX... the gift that keeps on giving. For over twenty years this was my least favourite theme in the game, but now I totally dig it.

One of the best games of gen 5. So good.

Some underrated/overlooked tracks from the amazing OST:

Night Attack

Backborn Story

Sad LucasArts games haven't had better representation in this thread; almost every single soundtrack they released was amazing.

This may just be a repainted cover of Ecstacy of Gold, but when it's this well done, who cares? I honestly don't think Outlaws was a particularly great game, but its soundtrack was.

I don't believe Ys games have been mentioned yet, so let me remedy that. Falcom games always have incredible soundtracks, and their more famous ones are obviously the Ys games.

Some choice cuts from Ys: The Oath in Felghana (reminder, this game is on Steam, and is amazing to play as well as to listen to):

The Boy's Got Wings

I dunno if anyone else remembers an old PS1 puzzle game called Intelligent Qube, but it's a fun game with a shockingly good soundtrack. Super bombastic orchestral stuff mostly, and amazingly "full" sounding for the era.

I know this. Honestly, Youtube is clogged with redundant "metal" covers of these songs with corporeal guitars, but when its all sampled it seems to work a lot better.

Fire up an emulator. My laptop just took a shit but I had a decent file going and was just finishing up all of the sidequests. Definitely worth playing through since it isn't the most difficult game, but still getting a 100% file requires at least one New Game+.

Probably my favorite game soundtrack ever. I love how throughout the game it remixes the main theme while making it sound different almost every time.

Some MOAR tracks from this amazing game

Antidote

Under the Stars

In Pursuit

Espionage

And the heartbreaking Epilogue

Just so we're keeping count. :P

I don't think Asura's Wrath's music has been talked about yet. The game itself is more of an interactive anime, one that is super grandiose in presentation, over-the-top silly, and a confused mess. And much like the game, the OST is a mixture of things that's a bit all over the place, but also quite colourful. Fukuda Chikayo pretty much shows off her versatility here with a few genres and sound palettes that get switched around to fit the different moods in the many, many cutscenes (something like 5 hours of them IIRC). Some examples of the different genres that come into play:

Orchestral (main theme)
Dvořák
Ethnic --- Gorgeous! Would not be too out of place in Shadow of the Colossus.
Groovy electronic something --- Think Command & Conquer games (yes that's quite a huge gap)
Western
Rock (mixed with the western theme here)

It's a wild and eccentric mix for sure, but it fits so well with the action, especially when it's super epic like in the video below. Really the only way to enjoy Asura's Wrath is to just watch it and skip the yucky gameplay altogether.

After having just completed Alien: Isolation I really like this track that plays near the end of the game. It plays at such a stressful time too. As soon as it starts playing, you know the game isn't fucking around.

Has anyone heard Terminator Sega CD soundtrack that came in 1993? It's pretty amazing and very metal like especially the second and third track.

The third song "Future Shock" is brilliant.

I'm working on finishing up this arrangement using these two tracks from the original Unreal:

The first track will serve almost as an intro and flow into the Main Title. It's almost halfway done, can't wait to finish it up and post it here!

For whatever reason video game soundtracks rarely leave a lasting impression on me, however I'll never forget a lot of the tracks from Lord of the Rings Online. The Chance Thomas tracks especially were just ridiculously good. Here are some of my favorites:

One of the two tracks from the Trollshaws:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9ftbrQLs_A

Lothlorien:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELxLjziAhmc

Evendim:

The first music you hear when you enter the Mines of Moria:

And finally, Rivendell:

Blood II (while the whole soundtrack is not that interesting, this industrial/ambient song sound great, some metallic, guillotine like beats! and Q3A electronic vibe)

The Void/Tension (this one is truly amazing ambient piece, abstract atmosphere for me)

Pathologic

Dark Souls II - Majula (of course whole soundtrack is noteworthy but this theme has especially weird and interesting atmosphere)

I've never actually played any of the Guilty Gear games, but the soundtracks are pretty stellar. The Lily of Steel is probably my favorite but there's a lot of close competition:

The other ost song that I keep coming back to is is the Prisma Illya version of the song Emiya from Fate/Stay Night. The song is good already but this version in particular I think is pretty epic. I just wish it belonged to a non-comedic spinoff of fate.

EDIT:

I forgot about Image Material too. Tatsh needs to stop fucking around and write a totally metal soundtrack:
