One can understand people involved in the decision of Morbid Angel's cover to not know about Hexenhaus, but those involved with Megadeth eight years later should have known about Morbid Angel:

Can't blame bands for wanting to use such a cool statue. Very somber.

I suggest we start listing the name of the band and album with our posts. Makes it easier to search to check if a release has already been posted.

I even thought the woman on the Xibalba one was doing the metal horns too at first, but it looks like her fourth finger is just short. Hell even the font for the two band names looks kinda similar.

Along these lines, a graphic designer just started a blog calling out plagiarism in metal album covers and it's really well done. People need to realize that taking a copyrighted image and fiddling with it in Photoshop doesn't eliminate the copyright. I doubt anyone would take this stuff to court, but it's pretty incredible how brazen and lazy these artists are.

https://artplagiarism.wordpress.com

This blog is pretty interesting!

I'm not a visual artist myself, so I'm not familiar with the way that plagiarism works. The example of The Thing is instructive because it tells you how some people basically just use copyrighted photos, play around with them on photoshop to try and make it look like it's their own.

Image
"This artist did try to move some things around, but unfortunately not enough. At first glance it seems like it’s just drawing inspiration from this famous picture of Rob Bottin and his legendary FX from John Carpenter’s “The Thing”, but when you lay each piece of art on top of each other in Photoshop, it’s clear that everything lines up. There’s a few instances where the artist tried to squish a face around here or there with some transformation tools in the software, but ultimately this is a case of cutting from a copyrighted photograph and pasting it into the artist’s digital file. Then the artist most likely used photoshop filters as well as classic tracing and paint-over methods to make the artwork appear “drawn”."

Ha, just stumbled across this, and while it's so simple and generic it'd be difficult to link artistically, it struck me as amusingly coincidental, especially given Abbath's Gene Simmons-esque tendencies.

Considering that's the painting Pandemonium by John Martin, who died 1854, I'm going to venture he did not. (I only know this because I looked up the Desaster album and checked the cover art credits.)

The second one is obviously a reference to the first, and then two simmilar to each other and somewhat to the previous ones:

the last two are probably referencing/ripping off this one:

Image

https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/R ... faces/4500

and since we're mentioning similarities, the animals in the raft are from Risk's previous album covers. there's also a FB reference on the vinyl cover, but that's too advanced :p

Upon this, Devourment's Molesting the Decapitated seems to incorporate Edvard Munch's The Scream, fading at the left corner. This is the most visible one I could locate.

Very close to being a doppelganger of Ancient Rites' Fatherland, is the tree in Suidakra's March of Conquest, where the bagpipes are blown at. This also seems a take not far from Bathory's Blood on Ice — Omega Virus, The Weeping Earth.

I appreciate the mention, but the location where I took the Stardust picture doesn't really match the other one. Although obviously, these kind of shorelines with rocks in the water are not rare around the world...
Mine was taken in Normandy, by the way :)

While not metal as such, I always think there is a similarity to these covers (both came out within a few months of each other)
