Didn't expect that there are that many crust bands with strings up to the point that a blog this niche can actually exist. :O

the new wolfbrigade is actually their most motorhead sounding album. Other than that you can dig up the classic (swedish) crust bands such as Genocide SS, Disfear, Pisschrist and there are a bunch of other more motorheadish bands.

Wolfbrigade are awesome but I found their new album to be a minor disappointment.

Awesome blog. I'll have to check some of the more recent entries, haven't been on it in a while.

If you don't mind a prominent 90s Neurosis influence, Ecocide are some pretty awesome crust with strings, really filthy yet quite atmospheric. Dead to a Dying World's first album is pretty similar and also quite good.

Could I get recommended some powerviolence albums? I listened to an Hellnation album and really liked it. So something similar to that band would be nice. I'm also looking for originality.

Spazz, Infest, Siege, Charles Bronson: Major pioneers of this niche
Nails: Early stuff, though they've been influenced by all sorts of stuff from the beginning
Man is the Bastard: More sludge oriented, also very influential
Weekend Nachos: One of the bigger names in the contemporary scene
Flouride: A killer new band I found some months back
Magrudergrind: Sometimes described as grindviolence for even more genrebation
ACxDC: Another reliable name
The Locust: Weird mathcore/noise influences

IamDBR nailed a bunch of em, but I'd add Crossed Out, No Comment and Neanderthal to the list of originators.

Can't go to wrong with Slapaham, pessimiser, satan's pimp and bovine records, all labels that put out some of the early shit as well as killer compilations like the Cry now, cry later and the accidental double homicide/Decapitation/etc... Series'

As far as originality goes I'd suggest:
Despise you - killer band with a particularly violent and more diverse take on the style, West side horizons is mandatory.

Crom - ridiculous schizophrenic trad metal influenced PV with a Conan fixation, the Cocaine wars is their best imo. Be warned not your average pv, utterly off its tits.

Gasp - psychedelic sludge violence sounds like grief and crossed out on whatever drugs the butthole surfers were on back in the day.

Unruh - not strictly PV but mixed up in that scene, mix of punk, sludge and grind Misery strengthened faith is killer.

Dystopia - same as Unruh not PV in strictest sense, but again from the same scene. One of the best crust/grind/sludge bands of all time.

Gnob - strange PV/grind with quite sarcastic Macabre esque songwriting, fun!

Well Hellnation is mostly Thrashcore.
The line between Thrashcore and PV is very thin. But when you listen carefully to them you will notice the differences.
Thrashcore(Fastcore): Fast Old School Hardcore with blast beat vocals are mostly screaming.
Older: Siege, Early(!) D.R.I, Electro Hippies, Lärm....
Later: Dropedead, Charles Bronson, Mk-Ultra....

PV: Took Thrashcore and added very prominent bass guitar. Added those PV throaty shouts to the thrashcore screams. Added Sludgy parts and lot more speed changes. Also a lot of times add Noise,Rap parts and samples.
Infest, Neanderthal, Mitb, No Less, No comment,Crossed Out, Spazz, Despise You Gasp, Lack of interest, Fuck on the Beach....
see the differences?
Anyway today we have a lot of mixes between PV, Grindcore and Thrashcore...

So for my recommendations apart from the classics ...
You said you look for originality check GRIDE!!. I think gride are the one of the most original bands in all extreme music!!! They Mix PV, Grindcore and Thrashcore with a lot of other stuff. Mange to be Both Technical/Progressive and keep it Punk.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKPw2cYzzFY

Tension: Were great PV/Grind band!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPAJumrElok

Wasteoid: Were Great PV.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TZObEMKlk4

To the point: PV Supergroup That actually sound great!! A must if you like Infest!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwG44iDKcYU

Bastard Noise(The more MITB songs): Far from Hellnation but very original
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT9l97L2LsQ

Bleach: Thrashcore. One of my favorite albums this year!
https://bleachthrash.bandcamp.com/

Completed Exposition: Great and Original PV
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuF2uZkC6AM

Blood I Bleed: Great Thrashcore/Grindcore.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VilVZhbguAs

If you like any bands in particularly tell me and I'll refer you some more.

IamDBR wrote:

Nails never were PV or close to it. They are just Hardcore band with blast beat and sludgy parts.

Come on people you can't talk about PV and not mention the Japanese legends/veterans. :-D
I am of course talking about bands like: Fuck on the Beach, Slight Slappers, Romantic Gorilla, BreakFAST, Mind of Asian, Dudman, Conga Fury, Power of Idea and so on.
A great compilation series for more Jap pv/fc would be those Thrash Ahoy (4 volumes)
And compilations released by any of the labels below.

Maybe most are viewed as Fastcore these days but they fucking destroy things even by todays standard.
Also check out these labels (they released lots of this stuff): Slap A Ham Records, 625 Thrashcore, Haunted Hotel Records, Regurgitated Semen Records, MCR and HG Fact.
Tons of cool stuff spanning from the early 90's up til today.

An obscure but one of the best of all these PV bands were this odd band from Canada called Third World Planet.
Their final EP "Desperation of the Flesh Machine" is the good stuff!

Slight Slappers below.

Please, advise me bands that are similar to late Anti Feminism. They plays Crust/Hardcore Punk/Crossover Thrash.

And advise me bands that are similar to early The Piass. They plays Thrash Metal/Crossover Thrash/Hardcore Punk.

anti feminism are pretty standard d-beat but with weirder vocals. Start with classics like anti cimex, mob47, discharge. You can also try the japanese crust/hardcore/d-beat scene with bands like G.I.S.M., Disclose and D-clone.

The piass are fairly similar but take more from thrash in some ways comparable with bands like toxic holocaust, bulldozer, Gehennah and Inepsy. Ofcourse the earlier mentioned hardcore bands also apply here.

Any recs close to this sound would be appreciated!

Sheeva Yoga is a great band. I'm looking forward to hear the upcoming split LP.
Found them few years ago while looking for bands that sound similar to Gride.
So if you like Sheeva Yoga you should listen to Gride(which is similar but way better).

Been enjoying Crossbearer and Until Your Heart Stops era Cave In alot over the past few days, wondering if anyone knows of any thing else quite like it.

I'm familiar with a lot of metalcore from that era and the closest thing that comes to mind is some early Converge and at a stretch Ire' circa Adversity Into Triumph and Chapter, and even so it's far from the same. Is there anything like it?

Thanks for the recs I know and love both bands, but good call on Dazzling Killmen hadnt really thought of them in the same context but they do have that similar mix of melody and dissonance they just lack that twisted thrash riffing that Cave In had. Definitely gonna have to crack out the Killmen and Craw while im at it.

I love Deadguy and Fixation is one of my all time favourites but not quite what im after, they make me think more Botch than Cave in, more angular and dissonant. So not what im after but great taste.

My skate punk band The Phosphorus Bombs out of Sydney, Australia recently released our first full-length after 2 EP releases.

It was mastered at Bill Stevenson's Blasting Room by Jason Livermore who also worked on recent albums by NOFX, Descendents, and Propagandhi so that was a pretty big thrill. We basically sound like the aforementioned bands, as well as the likes of Bad Religion, Good Riddance, Strung Out, Pennywise etc.

Our album is available to stream at https://thephosphorusbombs.bandcamp.com/album/cancers.

I'd love to hear some feedback from some punk loving Metal Archivers. Cheers!

No one yet?

Alright then. Now I'll be honest I haven't listened to this sort of punk in ages & I'm not really that knowledgeable on it in the first place so take this with a grain of salt.

I think you guys hit a sweet spot between accessibility & aggression. The main vocals are decent & so are the 'harmonized' gang shouts. I like how you guys sneak in a cool melodic riff here & there. The drums are punchy, after all you can't go wrong with dbeats! Everything sounds crisp & clear, maybe a bit too much but I reckon it is fine the way it is.

There seems to be vague similarity between your artworks, maybe it's just the art style & presentation. I thought that was kinda' neat too, I dunno.

Have you guys contacted any labels because I think this has some commercial potential. Much better than alot of the modern pop punk stuff I've stumbled upon, that's for sure.

Thanks pal.

One of our guitarists does our artwork and he definitely has a distinct style. It has a little bit of early Black Flag vibe, with some inspiration from Baroness and their use of a single dominant colour scheme for each album.

We sent it out to a bunch of labels prior to release but have yet to get any response. I'm guessing most labels are inundated with (mostly shitty) recordings, so who knows if they even listen to the stuff they get sent? I'm definitely not in this for the money, but it is a struggle to be heard without label support.
