Is the NFC much different though? It's an exciting season this year because there is so much parity across the league. Just when a team starts getting hot it seems like they find a way to lose. Definitely exciting for any fan of the sport.

Another historic night: Ottawa's Diontae Spencer smashed the pro football single-game record with 496 all-purpose yards; leading the Redblacks to a crazy-ass 41-36 win over Hamilton.

The win puts Ottawa atop the CFL East (pending Toronto's game next week) with a record of 8-9-1. Yeah... that's first place! However, no team has ever not won the Grey Cup after going 8-9-1. ;)

Anyone watching the Rugby League World Cup?

Apart from the Australia vs. England match, all the others have been disappointing blow-outs. Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Fiji all dominated their opponents to where the games were over by half-time. I'm hoping the others will be of better quality.

Goddamnit, Skins. Even if you all don't win any other games, I'd settle for them beating Dallas twice.

Raiders offensive coordinator has to go. Game plans have been terrible all season, and failing to adjust and take advantage of a depleted Bills secondary has likely ended their playoff hopes.

The Arizona Cardinals have cancelled their planned workout of Colin Kaepernick. There are conflicting reports as to why the team has cancelled the workout session. One source has said the free agent quarterback failed to show up on time after he was refused service at the counter of a National Car Rental in Anthem, AZ where he was staying.
While team president Michael Bidwell claims he arrived late after attending a disabled athletes charity event funded by the Maricopa Prosthetics Clinic where he took a knee after being presented with one by Terry Fox.
In other news, the league office announced Jeff Gillooly and Shawn Eckhardt as chiefs of field security

S'pose I should pimp the Canadian Football League one last time for this year...
Last night's Grey Cup game was another all-time classic for the ages; though as a Redblacks' fan I can't say it beats last year's overtime epic that brought Ottawa's first championship in 40 years :)

Yesterday, the Calgary Stampeders were ahead of the Toronto Argonauts 24-16 with six minutes left, and looked ready to make it a two-score lead and finish it off - when the Argos forced a fumble on the 1yard line and took it all the way back. Game tied! Toronto would go ahead with an FG on their next drive, but the Stamps weren't done. In scoring position again, just 1:30 left, and the OT-forcing field goal... NEVER HAPPENED! Mitchell chucks up a pass to the end zone in double coverage and it's intercepted. :O

For fans of statistical oddity, this marks back-to-back years that the Grey Cup was won by a team with an even record or worse  In both cases, Ottawa and Toronto took down a massively favoured, far-and-away first place team from Calgary.

So what you're telling me is that Calgary is well on their way to becoming the next Buffalo, but even sadder? Beautiful!

With the Giants announcing some combination of Geno Smith and Davis Webb starting at QB this week, the Raiders (somehow) have a very plausible path to the playoffs. Their remaining games are against the tanking Giants, the suddenly terrible Cowboys and Chiefs, the Chargers, and an Eagles team that could conceivably have nothing to play for in week 16.

Hmmm that is appealing! I've never bought into the Chiefs as a division champion calibre team; and you're right that everyone else in that list is either dreadful, too far ahead to care, or have really dug into their ass-useless pills at the wrong time. As usual though, the Chargers are completely unpredictable so they might jigger things for Oakland.

Both the Chiefs and the Cowboys have some serious rising stars (Hill, Hunt, Prescott) and should be winning more, but they've both also completely lost control of their offensive lines. I don't think Smith had more than two unhurried seconds in the pocket at a time for the entire game against Buffalo. Dak's been dealing with the same. Doesn't matter how many great rushers or receivers you have if the other team completely controls your play calling. This has become a very painful season. :(

The Chargers are weird, but I fully expect them to lose to the Browns this weekend. They haven't beaten the Browns by more than 1 score since 2004, and have lost 2 of the last 3 to them!

The Chargers have been looking like the best team in the AFC West for quite a while now, not that they have had a lot of competition. If it weren't for their terrible start to the season, I think they would easily win the division.

Separately, I have Dak and Alex Smith in my two-quarterback fantasy league and its crazy to think that through week 7 they were both top 5 in fantasy points. Now, I'm considering putting Blaine Gabbert in...

Vontaze Burfict got absolutely CRUSHED. He's a dirty player without a doubt, but this is awful. https://www.clippituser.tv/c/rvmgvg

If it had been anyone else I would feel bad, but Burfict is notorious for dirty hits, constant shit-talking, taunting, showboating, etc., and sometimes you reap what you sow. Smith-Schuster is only 21 and currently the youngest player in the entire NFL, so it's not surprising that he's not mature enough to keep his cool against that kind of behavior. I won't defend that kind of hit and I won't defend the taunting afterwards, but Burfict is far from innocent and doesn't deserve anyone's sympathy.

On one hand, FSM has hometown bias in this instance.

On the other hand, I wouldn't ever advocate cheap shots or initially injuring players, but if there's ANYBODY I'm willing to turn the other way on when he gets blasted in the face, it's Burfict.

Fucking Raiders. Even after everything, they come into the game tied for the division lead. They've gotten all the help in the world, including Marcus Peters being suspended for the game, and they absolutely shit all over themselves. It's only halftime, but not for one minute have they looked like they're actually in this game.

This is about the infamous Laurent Ciman trade.

Some administrators seem to have the strategy to exploit their best human resources until they are completelty drained just to drop or exchange them as soon as they aren't considered valuable enough anymore. In most cases, those inhuman and purely bureaucratical decisions are just as despicable as they're wrong.

Remember Montreal Canadien's Patrick Roy, undoubtedly one of the best goaltenders in the history of the NHL. He might have had a difficult personality but he was respected among most teammates, adored by numerous fans and last but not least incredibly successful. Then a new manager without much experience, reputation and success came in and didn't know how to handle such a heavyweight. It came to a clash and the coach tried to humiliate the goaltender by not taking him off the ice during a game when the entire team played terribly. Patrick Roy was furious, announced his departure and went on two win two more Stanley Cups for the Colorado Avalanche. The Montreal Canadiens haven't won one single Stanley Cup since then.

Some sportsmen and other people in their everyday lives don't always have the occasion to make such a brave move so easily. They aren't financially independent, they have families, friends and houses to pay near their workplace and they don't always have the occasion to start a new career or life. The administrators in charge know about this and exploit their employees recklessly.

This leads me to the current case of Laurent Ciman. He has had an incredibly successful career, a large group of fans and followers and is still a national player for the Belgian team despite his advanced age. He didn't join Montreal Impact for the fame and money but because he needed a secure environment for his autistic daughter who could get better treatments in Canada than in Belgium. Even though Ciman made his choice for the sake of taking care of his family, he gave everything for his new team. He was elected defenseman of the year in the MLS in his first year. He brought some attention to an internationally unknown team. He supported local charity and developed a strong bond with numerous fans. Ciman was also known for being severe and demanding towards himself and his teammates. Taking leadership also means taking risks. Laurent Ciman was always a perfect example for determination, honesty and integrity in both good and bad times.

Now, a new coach has joined the team and his first noteworthy decision was to send Laurent Ciman to an expansion team in Los Angeles to get two younger and rather unknown players in return. The coach, whose name isn't even worthy to be mentioned here, justified his decision by saying that he wants to start a new era and that his decision was only influenced by recent performances. The new coach wanted to show that the management is more important than one of the team's most experienced, most faithful and most successful players. The fans reacted very negatively which surprised the coach. This proves how disconnected from reality he really is.

The worst thing is the way this transfer was made. Laurent Ciman wasn't even asked whether he agreed to the transfer or not. The decision was taken while he was in Belgium with his family, just two weeks before Christman during offseason. Apparently, this transfer had been planned over weeks but nobody told Laurent Ciman about it. This is nothing new: managers expect their players to be honest but when it comes to themselves they are rarely role models for integrity.

The worst element about this trade isn't the fact that a great player is leaving a team that desperately needs a leader after the departure of captain Patrice Bernier. The worst element is the human factor in this decision. Laurent Ciman's autistic daughter now either needs to leave the country and work with specialists from yet another foreign country and in a foreign language which could seriously harm her developed or Laurent Ciman must separate from his family to work in Los Angeles while his wife and children must stay in Canada. Let's not forget that Laurent Ciman bought a house in Montreal, was very well integrated in the local community and that the family members were even planning on becoming Canadian citizens. All those dreams and hopes are now shattered - by a coach who didn't even take the time to talk to his star player appropriately.

It's very difficult to support this team after what has just happened. True fans have to criticize and question decisions like these. It's impossible to just turn the page from one day to another and to replace one player with another one. This example stands for many things that are wrong with society these days. Power, money and influence matter but empathy doesn't, even if managers might wrongfully claim otherwise.

It's time to change things for the better - by showing your disagreement with this horrendous decision. Or by deciding to leave and start anew like Patrick Roy once did.

I'm really looking forward to the NHL Centennial weekend, featuring my Ottawa Senators and the Montreal Canadiens in an outdoor game at the football stadium! And I'm especially eager for the Sens' Alumni Game - where my childhood favourite hockey player Damian Rhodes will be back guarding a net in Ottawa :D

My NFL Quick hits:

I hate the Steelers and always root for the Patriots, but even someone with my loyalties has to admit- The Steelers got royally screwed, with that no-catch call. I hate to see the Patriots get a cheap victory courtesy of a controversial (at best!) referee ruling. I would have rather seen them dominate the Steelers without any such controversy. Stuff like this only adds to why people hate New England (and there are plenty of reasons already to hate the Steelers.)

I don't like the Raiders either but again, that was a really tough way to lose a game, with that fumble touchback call on their last play. Again, glad they lost but, I still felt bad for them.

Anyone see that Oregon-Boise college game on Saturday? What was up with the right side of the line and the whole choreographed spin move thing at the line of scrimmage they kept doing? It's the new vegas dance move offense I guess. That whole game was weird. Oregon lost, but the Boise quarterback was arguably Oregon's best player during that first half- he gifted them both of their scores.

49ers have four wins now after starting 0-9. I dunno, maybe that Garapolo guy is the answer to their problems, and they can finally put that whole "kneeling at the national anthem" thing behind them (and I'm not gonna comment either way on that issue.)

Jimmy Garoppolo is the truth. He's now 5-0 as an NFL starter and spent 3 and a half seasons with Tom Brady, Josh McDaniels, and Bill Belichick. He stays very poised and doesn't make stupid mistakes and if he can win the next two games I think the 49ers will carry over a lot of confidence into next season. I just wish he joined the league a few years later so he could have stayed on the Pats after Brady retires.

That was a brain fart by Derek Carr. He didn't need to score on that play. Would have been first and goal with 30 seconds left if he just went down with the ball.

The Steelers release James Harrison and he signs with New England! I don't like it, dumping one of their all-time greats. Now, it would be a classy move if the team was terrible and they let him go to chase a chance to go out on top. But Pittsburgh's doing great, so in the circumstances tossing Harrison smells bad to me.

That is weird, especially given how popular he is with their fans. Well, the Cowboys blew their chance at the playoffs, the school I'm getting my Masters in is getting blown out in their bowl game, and the Mavs are one of the worst teams in the NBA with no obvious path to quick success. Other than the Astros beating LA, I haven't had a lot of things go my way.

Any predictions on the NFL playoffs? In the AFC, Pittsburgh is strong, but I think the Patriots can pull it out. The NFC is a little more open with the Vikings, Rams, and Saints all having a shot. I think Philly with Wentz is the best team, but I can't see Foles doing it. I don't have a lot of faith in Keenum either, but the Vikings don't lean that hard on him.

I mean, the guy is nearly 40, which is ancient for a linebacker. I think they should've kept him out of respect and as a mentor to younger defensive players, but then again I'm not responsible for the team's budget.

I think the Steelers have a real chance of beating the Pats this year. For once we're entering the playoffs with all of our star players healthy (assuming AB is ok after his long rest), and the roster is deeper than ever with Bryant and Smith-Schuster as very capable backups for AB. In past years AB was practically our only WR, leading to ridiculous triple-coverages and forcing us to rely entirely on the running game and short passes. As for the Pats, Gronkowski is healthy as well this year, so they're definitely a threat. But who knows, there could easily be an upset from a wildcard team if they get hot at the right time. The playoffs have been fairly predictable for the past few years, so I think we're due for some sort of crazy underdog success story.

As for the NFC, I have no fucking idea. A lot of strong teams will make for some really exciting games, no doubt.

I like Foles and was happy when they signed him again as backup. The one thing that he does that drives me absolutely nuts is throwing it away when he clearly has room to run. Hopefully he can clean that up, I do think he'll play much better than he did against the Raiders, hopefully a better rhythm with his receivers. I also miss Darren Sproles alot.

James Harrison had asked to be released a number of times throughout the season, so its not like the Steelers just cut him out of nowhere. He was in the unfortunate position of wanting to play and being sidelined and there wasn't anything he could do about it, so it makes sense he wanted to go somewhere else if he felt like another team would give him a shot. I wouldn't expect much of it though. Think about all the veterans the Pats have picked up and not used at all over the years. As much as I would love to see Harrison play and play well on the Pats, I think they probably won't even use him.

As far as playoff predictions, I really like the Rams and Saints in the NFC. Both teams have phenomenal run games, and as it gets later in the season, run games become more important. I also just can't quite hop on the Minnesota bandwagon yet. They've had a good run, but I just don't see them beating any of the other division leaders.

I'm a little scared of the Ravens in the playoffs, because they always seem to turn it up on notch in the postseason. They haven't quite clinched it yet, but a lot would need to happen for them to miss out. The Chiefs are also getting back to their early season form, so the AFC playoffs could be a lot more interesting than one would have thought a few weeks ago.

Not much surprise from me for this year's NFL playoffs. Top two AFC wild card seeds should both survive, then Jacksonville (sorry Buffalo :( ) ought to give the Steelers a tough out. And I practically came down to a coin flip between the Chiefs and Pats. Either way, I'm picking Pittsburgh winning the conference.

Seeding-wise, Atlanta popping off the LA Rams is an "upset", but I don't really feel that tag applies to the defending conference champs. Much as I'd love to see a great comeback story from Nick Foles, and my guess is Philly gets past a Falcons team who's worn out from playing in the toughest division; Minnesota has the defence to squeeze out the Eagles in the NFC final and the Saints in round two.

Yeah, they really dropped the ball on that one. I thought they would have it pretty easy against Cincy. I'm not mad though; I would much rather see Buffalo in the playoffs.

I'm gonna predict it's gonna be The Rams against (urrghh) Pittsburg in the Super Bowl. Philadelphia isn't the same without North Dakota State Guy, and Minnesota...well, they have as good a shot as anybody I guess, but I'm kinda liking the Rams in that matchup. I dont see either of the other NFC teams really going that far in the playoffs but you never know. On the other side, you basically have the Steelers and the Bradys as the class of the conference, and then you have everyone else, It would be nice if someone would knock off Pittsburg, but the Steelers are too good to allow that to happen, and I think they get the best of New England this year.

Trivia: Legendary Gulf Coast Florida recording artists Sloth are huge Rams fans. They have about two dozen releases dedicated to specifically the Rams. If they win the Super Bowl then I bet they do a full length album about the Rams- maybe even with actual music on it.

So it's Alabama vs Georgia in the college championship. I have nothing constructive to say about either team, and I don't really want to blanket insult people from Alabama just because of one horrible man's failed bid to be elected to congress, but I dunno, go Georgia I guess. At least their game was competitive and interesting to watch.

Australia regained the Ashes from England. Good test series by Australia. Steve Smith in particular batted well and kept Australia on the front foot.

Hopefully Joe Root recovers from dehydration - brave to play in heatwave conditions.

Yes! It was good to see, and I was fortunate enough to still be on holidays for 90% of the five tests. It was rather sad to see England not really putting up much of a fight to retain The Ashes, as our bowling and batting were far superior under our conditions, would've liked to have seen a closer competition, ah well...

It will be worth keeping an eye on the English Ashes series as we tend to perform rather poorly on English pitches, as our bowlers don't seem to be able to capitalize on the natural swing they offer - and our batting was woeful in the last series in England. I wonder how England will also cope with the loss of Anderson? He has been at the forefront of their bowling attack for a long time now, and it's time for the young bloods to show their mettle.

10 years, 100 million for Jon Gruden. TEN YEARS! I don't know if this is going to work, but it's going to be spectacular either way.

Once again the Chiefs got to the playoffs and then decided it was time to pack it in. Hopefully they enjoy their time off after a dramatic season.

That's an ending people are gonna remember forever, but what the FUCK, Saints?! All you had to do was tackle him in bounds and the game is over! Unbelievable.

^ They practically threw that game away: threw two picks in the first half, that trick play attempt on 3rd and 1 in the 4th, and then finally that miserable attempt at a tackle. It was an exciting ending, but the Saints really should have won that game.
