My bias of sharing the same city as they is in full effect and I’m entirely aware of it, but fans of sludge would do right to check out “Abandoned,” the debut album from Pillärs. Filthy, teeth-jarring grooves and occasional crusty blastbeat breaks, too. Oh, and they’re even fucking heavier live. Worth your time to hear and see if you can.

Tribulation and Dalriada delivered, but this Brutal Death Metal album is the highlight so far: Morbid Illusion - In The Crypt of the Stifled. (Favorite tracks: It came back, Maim)

Man, power metal has really been hitting the spot with me this year: Visigoth's USPM/trad stuff, Legends by Novareign is an excellent display of proggy shit with crazy shredding and great songwriting, I take back what I said about that Frozen Crown album earlier, that thing rules and the new Thaurorod album is pretty awesome too, with familiar yet catchy and memorable songs (MY NAME IS JEAN VALJEAN!)

edit: check out the Crawl/Leviathan split.

Apparently one can debate the amount of metal-consistency in this band. And at present it's not enough to grant them a place in the archives.

Setting that aside for a moment, the new album from Oceans of Slumber - The banished heart, is however a really great album.
Male growl mixed with female singing, great riffs and furious drumming makes this album one of the better releases this year for me.
At least upon my first listening through it.

Hey, yeah, this is fucking good. Exactly the kind of stuff I would've been enamored with in 2011 and still am now.

I think their more recent material has been largely metal, so I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually made their way onto the Archives. For me Winter was alright, but a lot of the songs didn't really go anywhere. The Banished Heart seems to show improved songwriting and the lead singer sounds great, but there are some moments where it drones on a little too long. Definitely worth returning to though.

Boethiah - Invocation of the Xenolith

Image

Death metal with a cavernous feel. Nothing groundbreaking but I like how this one sounds. The guitars remind me of Rotten Sound at times, and the whole atmosphere is pretty dank. Get on it.

Occitanian legion AORLHAC have returned after 7 years of silence with the final piece of their "winds" trilogy titled L'esprit des vents. Excellent and accomplished epic black metal in the pagan style of Belenos, Diamond Eyed Princess, Darkenhöld etc. Easily their best work to date. Out now on Les Acteurs de L'Ombre Productions.

French black metal was my first love in bm and this band sounds fresh and stunning. So much clarity in the instrumentation and production, but still menacing and powerful. This is some amazing shit. Even catchy! Thanks for posting this.

Love this album, though I have to admit it doesn't quite escape the shadow of Working Class Misanthropy for me. That record was just a powerhouse from front to back. This new one's great too, but feels a little 'looser' in the songwriting and the riffs don't have quite as much character. Still, there's not a second of filler, and the riffs are frantic and packed with energy nonetheless. I fucking love the chugs they randomly work in, and Warcrimer sounds like a maniac as always. Great stuff.

Unreal Overflows latest album "Latent" has quite some interesting bits:
It is combining Death's TSoP with Kalmah's vocals you could say.

Canada's Battlesoul have released what sounds to me (so far...a few songs in) a fantastic, riff heavy folky/power/progressive album

Russia's Trna have released a great instrumental/atmos/black/post album Earthcult:

Checked out the latest Ancst release, pretty meh to be honest. My main issue with it is that the band has an EXTREMELY limited "toolbox" when it comes to songwriting, although they do shine in some spots, Unmasking the Imposters, for example.

Arkheth and Horizon Ablaze, on the other hand, have released some really great material (Arkheth especially).

Hell yes, glad to hear you guys enjoyed the Aorlhac as much as I did. Their older material is quite good but this one is a cut above, they have definitely developed some over the last while. One of my favourites of the year thus far.

Is there a sub-genre this album doesn't hit at some point? I really like the folky aspects of this band, but I feel like they change up the pace so frequently it's hard to really get into.

That is true.

On an unrelated note, this debut album from Mad Hatter is pretty cool. The band features members of Golden Resurrection and Morning Dwell, but the sound is much more similar to the latter band. Relatively typical Swedish power metal, but its a fun album.

Human Serpent - For I, the Misanthropist

https://humanserpent.bandcamp.com/album/for-i-the-misanthropist

Greek two-man band paying homage to the 2nd wave of black metal. Lots of fuzzy, epic-tinged tremolos that took me right back to early Gorgoroth complete with the whole misanthropic feel. Equal parts impressive and nostalgic.

Their prior album, which did get a bit of attention, came out in 2015 amid that crazy wave of Greek black metal, e.g.: Macabre Omen, Katavasia, Acherontas, Ithaqua, Nocternity, so it was easy to lose track of. I still haven't caught up with everything from that scene.

Mid-paced OSDM with some doomy bits thrown in. Skillfully done.

So finally I'm up to date on Blood Harvest releases this year. Phew that took a while!

I'm still on page 3 in this thread, but so far I've enjoyed:
Quote:
Weedpecker - III
Verheerer - Maltrér
Archaic Tomb

And laughed my ass off:
Quote:

Gotta get a shirt with that cover!

New Black Royal album Lightbringer out today. Finnish Death Metal. I don't know a whole lot about these guys, but I'm looking forward to listening to this.

Cacotopia - Centuries of Bloodshed

Pretty cool black/death. The drumming hits like a machine gun which might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the riffs are cool and there's plenty of nice solos throughout. Worth checking out.

Man, I bitched about power metal having one of its worst years in recent memory in 2017 (though after years of not seeing what all the fuss is about, I've been warming up to Unleash the Archers lately), but already right away this thread is showing me a ton of cool shit for 2018. You've seen me gush about Frozen Crown already, but I've already given Thaurorod a few spins and I love that one to death too, and that Mad Hatter album is pretty fun so far despite being the most generic thing I've heard in eons. Fuck, even the new Leaves' Eyes is pretty solid and I haven't liked a single note of that band since the day they debuted. I don't know what happened, but the more melodic styles of metal have absolutely stepped up their game this year.

^ I figured you'd like Thaurorod.

Seasons of the Wolf and Solstice are reminding me what's so good about metal. Both of these are basically 100% albums for me. Don't think they will wear off - such great craftsmanship and writing in both.
