Interesting that they make their music video essentially a montage of the SF/Oakland Bay Area, considering how the last album contained plenty of lyrical content about how LA is sweltering shithole.

This is so much better than those fucking lyric videos with flying word art.

I never listened to New Bermuda and last time I revisited Sunbather it was less interesting than I originally remember, but this new track is really good.

i find it kinda funny that sunbather's cover was heralded as this masterpiece of modern graphic design and that font was ubiquitous for a couple years, and now this cover looks like a phoned in b-sides comp for some third-rate local pearl jam clone.

the song is whatever, though i did roll my eyes at the radiohead intro.

I've only listened to Sunbather once but this song sounds pretty cool. The transitions work well enough and it's rare to hear such a sunny vibe in any black metal derivatives.

I like the bit where it sounds like the Foo Fighters circa 97 with black metal vocals. Their debut was such a 'nothing' it's funny to see people get worked up either way.

I didn't like their 1st albums but New Bermuda was quite good, from the single it looks like this could be a good follow up.

New track is pretty good, it's nice to hear black metal derived stuff that isn't totally fantastical and escapist. I like the art too.

Ugh that cover is horrible. And I LOVE the Sunbather cover. It's better than the music attached to it.

Sounds promising. Doesn't have that pseudothrash edge that New Bermuda had but it's pretty good. Sounds like a less gazy Sunbather

Rob Zombie invented the genre I believe. He didn't have any money to finish the video to "More Human by Human" so he just spliced in a bunch of clips of his childhood videos.

Only difference is Rob Zombie actually made it work. But this video looks like some kind of EPK mixed with some recent vacation footage. But songs sounds good enough for me to check out the new album.

Oh my god this is such a perfect description. Well done!

I'll give this song a listen. I tend to listen to everything they put out at least once, but nothing has lived up to that Adult Swim single they put out years ago in my opinion. But even that I can't remember the last time I listened to it.

Yep! That's it. Suddenly drew a blank on the name and was too lazy to come back and add it. I listened to it after giving "Honeycomb" a listen and god the difference in quality and execution is just night and day. This song reminded me of what I disliked about their last album so much - the songs are unnecessarily long and add a completely useless melodic/show-gaze/mellow/post-rock section that contributes noting but pad the length. It feels so tacked on when if you removed it or at least shortened it, the song would be a lot better.

That's what was so good about "From the Kettle onto the Coil." The more melodic section was short and well-integrated into the song.

The song's okay, but I think it does encompass a lot of the issues that plagued New Bermuda, mainly that they're trying to write actual songs now and they just aren't sticking. What worked so well about Sunbather was that the songs weren't really songs; they were just 10 minute long, overwhelming blasts of energy and emotion right in your face, and yet the transitions from extreme to mellow still worked perfectly and were totally seamless. Everything about the songs on that album just kinda worked, whilst this song, like most of New Bermuda, feels like it's trying too hard to be more than that. It doesn't help that the production here is noticeably lamer than Sunbather, what with it being a lot thinner sounding, especially the guitars. I really hope the album as a whole is better than this, because it sucks to think that a band that was so fucking great a couple albums ago is trending in a direction that's gonna put me off them.

Count me in on the hype. I was a huge fan of Sunbather (I always compared it to bittersweet dsbm-type emotional palettes, like Woods of Desolation; not familiar with the skramz influence however). For some reason I never checked out New Bermuda, but now I am going back to it. "Honeycomb" is great, and I can't yet agree with the folks saying the lighter ending section is overlong or annoying. I do hope it makes more sense in the context of the album. If it doesn't have a good flow a section like that could really be a problem!

Really great track. I tried to lay off hearing it, considering the album is only 7 songs, and I didn't want to hear so much prior to it's release; but I caved this morning.

The crescendo just after the 9 minute mark is really SOMETHING.

"Canary Yellow" is indeed an excellent track, and make no mistake-I am extremely hyped for this record (limited vinyl pre-order to boot).

BUT, this upcoming album is basically the last time this band can sound like this before they get real same-y real fast. They are going to need to do *something* on the album after this one to mix it up a bit.

I mean, both available tracks from OCHL basically indicate that this is going to be New Bermuda Part 2. That's all well and good, as that was a top shelf album, even if it was a cleaned-up distillation of Sunbather. But if LP5 turns out to be more of the same, then the formula is going to quickly lose luster.

I don't know what kind of change ups would suit this band going forward, but I personally would start with dirty-ing up the guitar production. To my ears, the ultra clear and articulate guitar mixes on both New Bermuda and (by all indicators) OCHL don't really fit either the post-BM or shoegaze-y ambiances they are going for. The messy, smeary, more nebulous guitar mixing on Sunbather very much gets those aesthetics across in a better fashion. I'm not saying that they should simply re-write Sunbather, but that album's sonic aesthetics go a long way with this band's writing style.

Further, Clarke needs to *badly* vary up his lead vocal stylings, as he is clearly the weakest link in the band by far (assumption being that OCHL has the same one dimensional lead vocal performance the other three albums had). I don't know if that translates specifically to clean singing (an overdone trope in this genre), but it certainly could mean experiments with death metal growling, punk like shouting/yelling, or more intense spoken work sections (ala Envy).

Again, not to shit all over this album as I am looking very forward to hearing the final full record, and both "singles" (quotations used because the idea that this band-who's songs are lengthy on average with non-traditional linear song structuring and no real choruses to speak of-is commercially motivated is a laughable one) thus far have been superb.

So.... Deafheaven is basically just a band that plays black metal and messes with the aesthetic?

Edgy.

Oh no! Hipsters playing my music. We need better gatekeepers to stop them from this nonsense - how dare they do what they want without adhering to my idea of what they should look and act like.
If you don't like it don't listen and get the fuck over it. Sad this has to be said every time this band comes up.

I know you're specifically talking about studio performance, but if you've seen them live you know George is NOT a weak link at all.

Ok, so maybe "weak link" was a bit strongly worded (especially because the bass playing in this band has always been fairly pedestrian now that I think about it), but I think you get the overarching point I'm trying to make. I don't think it's unreasonable to want to see Clarke diversify his performances going forward on future albums.

And yes, I am aware of the clean vocals on "Canary Yellow", which is a new dimension, but those are very much a background texture. I'm talking specifically about lead vocals.

And I'd love to see this band live, just haven't had the opportunity as of yet. All the footage I've seen confirms this band is the real deal live (i.e. no clicks, no backing tracks, no bullshit). And yeah, of course Clarke is a savage and engaging frontman live (again, from the footage I've seen).
