Hi there, I'm looking for some dark, calm, melancholic music to listen to during lonely walks in obscure, desolate, forgotten places like old ruined buildings on the fringe of a forest or some bleak, loosely inhabited districts of some down-at-heel towns in autumn weather. I like ambient, but I'm looking for something along the lines of Swallow the Sun, My Dying Bride, Christian Death... something like that. I'm all for the mood and atmosphere, the genre is not as important. I think Therion around the 90's had some very melancholic and dark tunes, distorted guitars - I hope you know what I mean. So, any suggestions?

Try the earliest Mortiis albums, i.e. the first and second one. Should be one possible, and suitable musical form of what you're looking for.

"Svartkraft - The Plague Ship" is highly melancholic BM, the rest of the album is great too, but heavier.

The "9Beds" demo is pretty dark and eery, maybe not recommended for anyone to listen to in the dark/alone, but really atmospheric Experimental BM. Kinda like Stalaggh without the yelling.

Katatonia - Dance of December Souls

Good chance you've heard/listened to it, but this instantly came to mind when reading your request.

The "down-at-heels towns.." part of your description makes me immediately think about Lifelover's Konkurs, that album has a great urban, melancholic feeling

If there's a band I always felt captures those emotions better than anyone else it has to be Evoken
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMLALXEaiMA

This one man project from Chile, Lethargy of Death, also has a great despair and desolation atmosphere to it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIRtbqTJeWc

other bands with a similar vibe that might work for you, and that I would highly recommend to death/doom listeners in general:
Doom:vs
Shape of Despair
Colosseum
Esoteric
Commatose Vigil
Mournful Congregation
Skepticism

Good metal mostly doesn't suit the purpose in mind.

That aside, I personally recommend The Cure's Pornography, which is just an extremely depressing record.
Also, you might like Lycia, I know that Petrus Ratajczyk said that some of his works were influenced by Lycia. Personal recommendations on that front are Ionia and A Day in the Stark Corner.
If you like prog rock, try The Final Cut (Pink Floyd). It doesn't seem like it's inherently trying to be depressing, per se, but something about the rich orchestral flourishes, the dark atmosphere, and the vocal delivery, coupled with the lyrics, make this one of the most depressing albums of all time to listen to, to be honest.
I also like late-90s Katatonia (earlier and later, not so much), so I recommend Discouraged Ones, as well as the non-album track "Quiet World" (released on the Saw You Drown promo).

Anti's - The Insignificance of Life. Mostly mid-paced with fuzzy hypnotic riffs, and, unlike so many DSBM bands, the songs here don't drone on forever.

Steve Roach (a non metal artist) is excellent. Nice to see Colosseum and Esoteric being mentioned.

Lustre has some good songs for that:
https://youtu.be/M4uB9Swl6ms (be patient with the intro...)
https://youtu.be/crub87IRYlY
https://youtu.be/pyNLnaGb8oI (bit more uplifting)

Might be an obvious rec but Burzum's ambient albums/tracks:

Few loose tracks from various artists:

Nebula Orionis or Bludklinge: https://youtu.be/ZP4309QwEwE

Deinonychus' "The Silence of December" should be up your alley. Dark, simple, romantic, melencholic, not quite as gothic as MDB or symphonic as Therion, but a well composed halfway between the two, firmly on the black metal side of things. This album always gave me a more urban than foresty vibe, as well.
